65,970 - 64,723 call it 1250 miles in a year!

Doing that sort of mileage it's unlikely to wear out....

Hi,I'm looking for some advice on buying a used automatic diesel ( up to £9,000). My only two needs is the best MPG possible from an auto and that it meats euro 6 standards I'm open to size, make and year. I cover around 15, 000 miles annually avaraging 60 - 70 mph with a little in towns. I've read quite a lot online about PSA's bluehdi diesels, I see the Citroen C4 bluehdi returns great mpg, likewise the Peugeot 208 1.6 bluehdi. Also I've heard the Skoda Octavia and Renault Clio 1.5 return great mpg

What's the ultimate when it comes to MPG? ... Read more

<< And petrol costs less than diesel as well. >>

I reckon that the higher cost of diesel fuel (roughly) cancels out its slightly better consumption figures in today's cars, like for like. Doing 15,000 miles a year uses about 1150 litres @ 60mpg or 1360 litres @ 50mpg. At £1.50 a litre the difference is worth just over £300. Not insignificant, but pretty small in the whole cost of changing a car to get better fuel consumption....

There was some discussion on these about 10 years ago (e.g.thread 73482). I assume they are now pretty standard items, and may be integrated with accident prevention systems on some cars. But considered in isolation, and compared purely with the conventional cable handbrake often operating on rear drum brakes, can the driver control the force with which the brake is applied, or does the ECU decide ? My engine light came on last week after noticing some acceleration issues on a long drive. On the whole, the car still runs okay, but it limps sometimes and doesn't speed up as well.

I ran a diagnostic and was told I need to replace the turbo actuator/wastegate. On looking online, I can't find a definitive item I need to order as the details aren't always clear. ... Read more

Why do you think the turbo actuator needs replacement?

Asked if I could do a quick job last week and deliver a car.
I’m pretty sure it was the best car I’ve ever driven, and almost certainly the most expensive.
Superlatives run out when trying to describe the Rolls-Royce Spectre. Firstly, it’s electric. So existing levels of R-R refinement are turned up a notch or two. The ride quality has to be felt to be believed - the anti-roll bars disengage when travelling in a straight line, so any vertical movement of one wheel can’t influence its axle mate. As soon as the steering wheel is turned, it re-engages and corners in a remarkably spritely manner (stressing that I was driving like Miss Daisy’s driver).
I didn’t get chance to play with the infotainment much, but it’s a R-R version of BMW’s system.
The car starts at £330,000, but with options most will be at least £400,000.
Looking forward to doing the return trip in it in a couple of weeks. Read more

Doesn't the new owner want to keep it? ;-) If not, rather an expensive hire car or, for someone, trip? Still, you do get to enjoy it on the way back rather than some bland Eurobox hire care or whatever.

I shudder to think what it costs to insure, given it is an EV as well and must require one heck of a lot of batteries to give the car reasonable performance and range capabilities....

Metropolis.

Did you always intend on going north? Not everyone did, but probably a better decision long term than those that went south, then south again... then across the sea.

Back to cars I agree with you, and nowadays Toyota is king although it was some time before the ubiquitous LRs, in their much simpler form, lost popularity.

During selling my old car, one buyer called me to the boot while the other was at the bonnet. When I went to the front, he had just finished doing up the coolant cap. He then asked to take it for a spin. Thrashed it then opened the bonnet. Proclaimed the gasket had just gone. The coolant tank was thick with black oil and trickling over. I took pictures of it. The dip stick however looked normal. He insisted the car was almost worthless yet he still wanted to buy it for parts. I took pictures, including a discreet picture of the buyer as something made me uneasy at the time.

Note the last time the car was driven about 4 weeks earlier, a garage had done a pressure test, checked the exhaust and more, advising there were no indications of gasket issues. Read more
