Do I need to replace caliper assembly bolts on my calipers, I’ve had some issues with the pads so I’ve had the assembly on and off several times, the first time they needed quite a bit of force to undo them, and I had to tap the spanner with a copper mallet to help!

they are M10, 10.9 bolts.... Read more

The "Snugging bolts up by feel is just fine for the vast majority of bolts on a car," is a general statement, so in that context your presumption would be incorrect.

"has never, ever been a problem" is, of course, a personal statement. I make no claim to proximity to the recommended torque (how would I know?), simply that any deviations from it havn't caused me grief....

I never thought of doing that....I will give a go next time I drive.....

I recently replaced the rear brake pads on my car, but they got stuck in the mounting bracket and had to be tapped out (I used a piece of wooden broom handle as a drift).

The caliper bracket was corroded, and the pad edges were rough, so I cleaned both up before proceeding. My concern is that I may have inadvertently damaged the new pads while tapping them out, particularly the area around the round hole where the friction material meets the metal backing. I didn't realise this was under a shim!... Read more

<< I'm slightly surprised to learn that there are no 21st century examples of drum brakes, but admittedly 21st century cars are of only academic (and rather morbid) interest to me. >>

Ed, I presume your remark is tongue-in-cheek - my Pug 207 (2008) certainly has rear drum brakes, and I am quite sure there are plenty of others like it....

My local garage can repair it, but they didn’t want to put a new injector on, if that wasn’t the problem, which will then cause me more money, the diagnostic machine they use, isn’t as in depth as Citroens would be
I can’t get booked in till the 11th July, but will keep you posted on what happens and the cost etc

Hi,

I have been driving my 2019 Suzuki Vitara 1.4T all grip auto for just over a year. I noticed that my car's steering wheel would not self centre but off 5-10 degree left or right after turning the steering wheel left or right. I tried different scenarios and found that... Read more

Hello Rerepo,

Thank you for your explanation. That's something new to me. You seem to read my mind. I am practicing to drive on motorway. The self return of steering at low speed makes me unease. I hold it with both hands on A-road with bumps and motorway....

We have a top of a range Volvo XC40, its Plug in Hybrid and absolutely loaded with extras (built for a dealer demonstrator and bought by us in 2021). Beginning to think what we might replace it with when the PCP ends. We are paying eye watering monthly payment albeit for a fabulous car, but job changes since 2021 and approaching retirement lead me to ask ... (before handing over a large balloon payment to Volvo for a 4 year old car), what else is out there that we could get for less money.

Having been spoilt rotten with all the features this car has, there are a few we would NOT want to do without, some I would not even consider very high end, yet don't seem to appear as often as you would think, others are high end.

So what other cars have these features (the ones we would not want to lose)... Read more

I was in a similar position a couple of years back. I got a very good trade-in price for my old XC40 and bought a new XC60. With a generous discount from Carwow I was able to end up paying less for a new and bigger car. Just a thought.
if you look at Lexus UX I think you will need to look at Takumi spec to get all of your requirements, very nice but not cheap.

The insurance claim is for the dealer to sort as the car was in their possession and them driving.

As to the rest if it took 18 months to notice it's hardly grounds for rejection. Furthermore the difference on value on a £3500 car is basically nothing. Even if you were to reject the dealer is quite entitled to charge for 18 months use and I'm sure they'd just say no anyway...

My first posting and I am stuck. Would appreciate some help.

Did a regular engine oil / filter change after 7 months and c. 6000 miles. Engine is clean, 60k miles and oil and filter usually changed twice a year. No sediment in the old oil.

I was day dreaming and mistakingly overfilled slightly. Opened the sump plug to drain the excess oil and nothing. No signs of any sediment. And nothing has fallen in whilst filling.

Prodded around the sump hole with wire. And ran the car 5 minutes to warm the oil. Made no difference.

Filler cap was undone. Ive removed the new filter and housing and refitted. Made no difference.

No oil warning light showing but the engine is making that noise due to the overfilling. So I really want to drain the excess.

I’d be immensely grateful for any suggestion as to how to resolve this.

Thanks Read more

Hi, a friend of mine has recently bought a 2018 xtrail. She says that she hears a beep when she drives past certain places. It is unrelated to speed as it happens at the same locations each time she drives past them. There is nothing showing on the dash. Any ideas gents? Read more

Some Nissans beep to highlight things to be cautious of, kind of like a terrible co driver. It can be switched off in the satnav options.

Can anyone recommend a reliable source for a replacement HP laptop battery?

Plenty available on eBay and Amazon but I'm concerned about the quality. Several years ago I purchased a battery on eBay for a t***iba laptop and it only lasted a year. Apart from the longevity aspect there's also the worry of it going pop whilst charging. Unsurprisingly, the original battery was made in China but at least that would have passed HP quality control. The cheapo replacements will not have done. Original HP replacements no longer appear to be available. Read more

As mentioned upthread I've already tried the HP parts store without success.

Amazon. Use them a lot, but the battery sellers have low 4 out of 5 ratings....
