Hi
After a bit of advice please.
I purchased a Clio from a garage in April. I paid £4795 for it with 105,000 miles on the clock. It had a 6 month warranty (total max claim £1000). New service and MOT 2 months old.
After a couple of weeks a horrible grinding noise was coming from the engine, along with a brake issue.
I returned it to the garage and they diagnosed a faulty gearbox and warped brake discs. I had only done 150 miles in that time. They claimed on the warranty for the gearbox and replaced with a reconditioned one. I opted to pay a bit extra from my pocket for the clutch and flywheel to be replaced.
Yesterday there was a grinding noise again, this time when the clutch was pressed down. The AA came and recovered it to the garage. The garage said the gearbox has gone again (only driven a further 300 miles with the recon gearbox). They said they will replace it with another recon gearbox and a new clutch and flywheel again.
I told the garage that I have done less than 600 miles in the car, and that I had given them an opportunity to rectify the gearbox already, but now I believe the car is not fit for purpose and I want a full refund under section 24 of the consumer rights act.
As thought, he told me to do one. So I’m perusing this with legal representation.
However, I wondered what people’s thoughts are regarding the original repair.
The garage told me that the recon gearbox was from eurocarparts. However googling it I can’t see eurocarparts selll gearboxes. I am also surprised a recon gearbox would go wrong after so little mileage.
I have a suspicion that to cut costs they’ve tried to repair the original fault and never fitted a recon one.

When I asked what had been found after the repair at the tyre centre, they stated it had been leaking at the beading. First time I've heard of this - both bikes and cars on tubeless tyres in more than 50 years on the road. I recall hitting a big pothole recently on a very badly lit road and assume it was this that caused the leak. Lucky I have "old fashioned" 45 section tyres or it could have been a broken wheel. Just had this with Mrs BJ's Panda when we had 4 new Goodyear Vector All Season tyres fitted. After a while I took it back and they checked where it was leaking - I won't mention the National chain but basically the wrong type of weights had been applied on the inner edge of the alloy rim causing a slight weep. They cleaned up the rim applied a sealing substance and re balanced properly. All good now.

More a surplus of ambition over ability if you ask me.

This is a hi pressure injection system , so possibly a faulty injector or a clogged up air inlet tract . You’ll probably need to remove inlet manifold for inspection.
Fitted new calipers and handbrake efficency was raised as an issue but passed, this year they failed

Madf's suggestion sounds reasonable.
I've never been a fan of these self adjusting calipers incorporating the park brake mechanism, thinking back over the years with various makes they can be prone to issues with the self adjusting mechanism and pistons sticking, difficult to lube too without fully dismantling....
Hi,there are 2 sizes of ball joint cones on the lower front suspension arms (18mm/22mm).Where do you actually measure the cone,is it at the top or at the bottom ?

Correction ! I meant 21mm not 22mm
if only I'd know about this before the auction. A snip at $2m.

Why would anyone want to do that when they contain lots of valuable contents? They’re much too high value not to make use of again.
I'm nearly 60 and thought I had knowledge of, if not actually seen, most classic cars on the road in my time, but I saw one this morning that I wasn't previously aware of: a Vignale Samantha, based on the Fiat 125 platform. Very pretty car.
Anyone else seen a car recently that made you do a double-take? Read more
Don't think I ever heard if that one, but few months back I saw a Borgward Isabella coupe on the A48 just north of Newnham Glos, fine looking motor.
MIL's garage door has broken, it is the old type with a sprung bar along the top on the inside, with two spindles either end with wire cables running to pins on the actual door (cable has broken on one side).
Found a kit on t'internet and ordered it, but I'm wondering if the copper grease I have in the shed would be suitable to re-lubricate everything?. If not, what kind would be best?... Read more
I just used LM grease on the vertical runners and every couple of years give them a spray of WD40, the same as the spring.

I appreciate this is an old thread, but why even talk to them?
Just reject the car. It is your right....
