Wouldnt the reduction in volume as the gases cool reduce the back pressure? I'd think the boundary layer shear and turbulence friction on a long pipe is likely to be a more important factor

I'm trying to recall what I learned decades ago. You have to realise, it's not a smooth laminar flow, but pulsed. IIRC that makes a difference.

Very big difference on 2-strokes, which exploit reflected exhaust pulses from the exhaust system to modify flow in the cylinder. Perhaps less of a factor in 4-strokes with cam driven valves

I have noticed a faint thud when coming to a stop or driving very slow in my 2016 Merc GLA 220d 4Matic. I jacked the car up and checked the wheels incase they were loose, or a bearing was knackered, but all was ok. I listened in the boot while someone was driving and it is coming from the rear. There was also a very faint whine too. I wondering if it's the 4Matic playing up. I have read common issues are the rear diff and the Viscous Couplings.

Can anyone give any advice or any way I can determine what's at cause?... Read more

Here in Taiwan, these tend to be driven by junior level gangsters.Thuds and whines coming from the boot are thus not unexpected, but dont last long.

Hi guys

I just needed some advice regarding No claims discount

So 3 years ago when I renewed my insurance I put 4 yrs NCD when I in reality had 3 “genuine mistake” which I just noticed now.

The problem I have now is none of the insurance companies noticed this mistake which means they have been sending me renewal letters with NCD proof every year.

Which now means that I will have 7 yrs NCD when I should have 6.

Going forward my insurance is now coming to an end soon and I don’t know whether I should keep it as 7 or maybe put 6 or none which would be quiet annoying as I would have to start from scratch.

Some people say that I should leave it as 7 as I have proof for it and some have said that my insurance would be invalidated when it comes to making a claim.

Any advice ?

Thanks Read more

Ask your insurer to confirm how many years discount you have. Whatever they say is the number to state.

On my return home today I had caught up with an absolute crawler with a very low power motorcyle behind him, i had to follow the pair for a few miles and junctions. knowing the road I was ready to overtake on a stretch that has clear. It was clear I checked my mirrors and the motorcycle to see if he would overtake. After a short delay checking I indicated and accelerated to pass. As I am along side him he suddenly starts to swerve towards me making some small contact and scratching 2 panels. Thankfully he didn't come to any harm and there was no visible damage to the bike, we both stopped once safe to do so and exchanged details.

Will the insurance company likely see this as his fault, my fault or both? and subsequently clobber my premiums?... Read more

Insurance companies base decisions on evidence.

Your evidence needs to be far better than the other side to prove you are in no way responsible....

Can someone help me with tachometer of my 205, because the car injector pump rev limiter has been tampered by the i**** previous owner.

When I took over a tractor other day, the car has pause round 4,000rpm, it doesn't feel like is limited on right rev of 5,540rpm what my manual book said, I have a multimeter tool clip the positive red cable to the alternator signal and the black negative to the battery. Idle speed on cold and warm is prefect, but when I tried to raise the max rev, my multimeter screen number has disappeared after 2,000rpm. I could not check the max rev numbers. I was thought that my multimeter was faulty when I purchased a new and better one than the old, it is done the same numbers is disappeared after 2,000rpm.... Read more

Of course the pump is fine, drive every day. I think the rev limit has drop lower than 5450rpm by someone who tampered.

Camper.van.man

Hi everyone. I've just bought a 2021 XLWB Relay with the aim to do an immediate conversion into a camper. I bought, it on Sunday and by Wednesday it's be stripped out, including seats and bulkhead and I've also cut a 400x400mm hole in the roof for a Maxxfan. That's when I saw the little sticker in the windscreen that said 'next service due at 104k miles' - the clock only says 33k!!!! Whoops.

I've got the original service invoice from the garage (95k miles) and proof from the van's original owner (a big multi-million pound company) that they sold it directly to the trade seller that I bought it from. It's a slam dunk really. ... Read more

Tell them you want a full refund and compensated for your costs or you’ll take the matter to the local trading standards. They’ll be only too happy to nail them and from what you’re saying it’s a clear cut case. It’ll kill their business stone dead and leave them with costly legal fees. They can fix the van that they shamelessly clocked. I wouldn’t spend a lot of money turning it into a camper, find the good low mileage example you set out to buy in the first place.

Typically hybrids are FWD and they have motor besides engine in front.

But I wonder why not place the motors at rear and make it drive only rear wheels in EV mode?... Read more

movilogo

I think it is due to power split device which combines rotation of fly wheel and motor. If engine and motor are driving direct axles it must be hard to sync them to same RPM

for 4WD (with rear motor) that is not an issue because speed is less.

Hi

After a bit of advice please.

I purchased a Clio from a garage in April. I paid £4795 for it with 105,000 miles on the clock. It had a 6 month warranty (total max claim £1000). New service and MOT 2 months old.

After a couple of weeks a horrible grinding noise was coming from the engine, along with a brake issue.
I returned it to the garage and they diagnosed a faulty gearbox and warped brake discs. I had only done 150 miles in that time. They claimed on the warranty for the gearbox and replaced with a reconditioned one. I opted to pay a bit extra from my pocket for the clutch and flywheel to be replaced.

Yesterday there was a grinding noise again, this time when the clutch was pressed down. The AA came and recovered it to the garage. The garage said the gearbox has gone again (only driven a further 300 miles with the recon gearbox). They said they will replace it with another recon gearbox and a new clutch and flywheel again.

I told the garage that I have done less than 600 miles in the car, and that I had given them an opportunity to rectify the gearbox already, but now I believe the car is not fit for purpose and I want a full refund under section 24 of the consumer rights act.

As thought, he told me to do one. So I’m perusing this with legal representation.

However, I wondered what people’s thoughts are regarding the original repair.

The garage told me that the recon gearbox was from eurocarparts. However googling it I can’t see eurocarparts selll gearboxes. I am also surprised a recon gearbox would go wrong after so little mileage.

I have a suspicion that to cut costs they’ve tried to repair the original fault and never fitted a recon one.

Thanks. Read more

I appreciate this is an old thread, but why even talk to them?

Just reject the car. It is your right....

When I asked what had been found after the repair at the tyre centre, they stated it had been leaking at the beading. First time I've heard of this - both bikes and cars on tubeless tyres in more than 50 years on the road. I recall hitting a big pothole recently on a very badly lit road and assume it was this that caused the leak. Lucky I have "old fashioned" 45 section tyres or it could have been a broken wheel. Just had this with Mrs BJ's Panda when we had 4 new Goodyear Vector All Season tyres fitted. After a while I took it back and they checked where it was leaking - I won't mention the National chain but basically the wrong type of weights had been applied on the inner edge of the alloy rim causing a slight weep. They cleaned up the rim applied a sealing substance and re balanced properly. All good now.
