I never owned a BMW. I try to buy sensible cars with low repair costs.
I fancied a BMW 3 series. I keep reading about high repair bills. YouTuber Scotty Kilmer's who saying BMW = Big Money Wasters Money Pit etc....
I don't know if a BMW is worth. I don't want a BMW for prestige, but may be a great driving experience. I am not a boy racer.... I want something great to drive. ... Read more
I did more digging. The BMW I was interested has a N20 engine.

The Mail on Line has an aerial view of the roundabout where the TV presenter was in collision with a car and suffered serious face injuries. The roundabout is very big one with 3 traffic lanes all around it. The road entering the roundabout at the alleged collision spot is 4 lanes. Whether the collision happen with a car already in the roundabout or one entering it is not stated. I would seriously question the wisdom of any cyclist attempting to navigate a roundabout like this. There is an underpass and cycle lane under the roundabout which would be the safer option. The chap lives in Sheffield so would probably know it existed. I wish him a speedy recovery. Read more
When did you last use this underpass? Other locals say broken glass is a problem, the tunnels are dark and the chances of meeting an insalubrious character are not low. Would you use it if you were female?
This is the UK most underpasses are like this and the modern female can usually take care of themselves if you ask some. DW accident was in broad daylight so a few seconds in the underpass would have saved him a lot of grief but we are all wise after,
May I please seek some advice.
My new Nissan Leaf has developed a fault and won’t start up. My expectation was that my local Nissan dealer would take the car, fix it and in the meantime provide a courtesy car. This is more or less what the warranty promises.... Read more
Is the dealer you purchased from relatively local? They would be the best people to deal with for enforcing a warranty claim.
My Hyundai Amica recently got scrapped and I've been considering getting another one (probably unwisely).
Oddly enough, one has come up on Autotrader close to where I live for £1,750 (next MOT end of July) with the following advisories:
- Rear Registration plate deteriorated but not likely to be misread (0.1 (b))
- Power steering pipe/hose has slight seepage steering rack (2.1.5 (a))
- Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Front Wheel bearing slightly noisy (5.1.3 (b) (i))
- Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material all pipes coated (1.1.11 (c))
are these going to be costly to fix down the line? Should I give this a skip? Read more
Interior looks like new but I still would hesitate at spending that amount on such an old car. It does have its good points though, as pointed out. Dealer might take £1500 but try lower first.
Totally agree, looks tidy enough but expensive, bet the dealer gave around £500/£600 for it, if you really want it offer a thousand...you never know your luck, think I'd be sorting the wheel bearing out if it was me...
UK's 20 most polluted rivers revealed in Top of the Poops league table - see list - Mirror Online
The above is only a survey for 2021 and it does not bode well for the future. If it is not sewage being discharge into rivers and streams then it is silage or chemicals and fertilisers spread on farmland. From my own experience the rivers from the coal valleys in Wales used to run pitch black with coal waste from the tips. Now this has been cleaned up and fish and wildlife largely restored the rivers have to contend with ever increasing incidents of sewage overflows when we have heavy rains. Caught up in the trees is everything imaginable that goes down the toilet as well as the rest of the stuff that plagues the litter problem this country has. All this eventually ends up in the sea together with the beaches own problems of sewage discharges, plastics etc.... Read more
"How it happens and the timing may be uncertain - but I have more confidence in a scientific consensus reached by some of the best brains on the planet than the less well informed" There is no such thing as a consensus in proper science. "I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had" Michael Crichton at CalTec lecture 2003
Yep. Consensus is a term used in political circles and until recently, was not used in science. Amazing how immediately after the politicalisation of science about 25 years ago, 'consensus' became the norm - often with zero effort to bother or adeqautely checking the 'work' of those they now 'believe in'.
Sounds to me that science is back - ideologically at least - as it was before the likes of Galileo was imprisoned by the Inquisition for deigning to prove that the Earth revolved around the sun and (with others) asking pertinent questions about the scientific orthodoxy of the day....

Sorry I forgot to update thread. One of the editors who was overall responsible for the HJ site has moved on so it may be a case of waiting to appoint someone new. I have not heard anything to suggest the site is moribund.
It's certainly quiet....
