Car has done 99k. FSH with recent full service.
Driving from London to Hampshire car lost all power on Guildford bypass at a dangerous place going uphill on bend with nowhere to pull off. Zero power. Only warning light was battery.
Attended by AA who said there was no compression and guessed I’d blown the engine as cam belt was intact. Only thing that happened when turning ignition was whirring sound.
Recovered back to local garage - when car was off-loaded AA man tried the ignition and car started perfectly and drove around the car park. Left the car with the garage. They ran computer diagnostics but can find no fault. Battery tested and perfect. Spoken to other garages but no-one can tell me what the fault is, why it happened or whether it will happen again. Last garage told me they couldn’t diagnose an intermittent fault if it wasn’t in progress at the time.
Car still driving normally after 10 days but only using on local roads in my little town. Too nervous to use it on a fast road.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Read more
My hazard warning switch failed and I was unable to obtain a new one from Vauxhall. I resorted to buying a used one. This operated the external warning lights OK but the light on the switch itself does not work.
Does anybody know what the light on the switch is and where I might find a replacement, please? Read more
Thanks for your reply. It is some time since I took the cover off the switch but I believe the light was attached by two wires and was a small red, probably solid state unit.
My 92 year old father was convicted of driving without due care and attention in November 2020 no
Issue so far. However in April 2021 he was contacted by Dyfed Powys Police , stating as he was convicted of a recordable offence he was to attend at a local police station for Photographing,Fingerprinting and collection of DNA. Being an ex police officer I knew this was incorrect and challenged them, they replied oh sorry it’s a mistake fair enough you think however I am sure Dad was not the only and that Dyfed Powys is not the only force to wrongly request this . I have complained directly to them nothing other than sorry being their reply, how do we publicise this to the general motoring community?
I have sent to press office of AA and RAC no reply from either, all very very unsatisfactory to say the least.
Please circulate

Just be aware that if the police do this then it is assault. See a solicitor.
hello, I'm in the market for advice on my first car - I passed five years ago on a manual but then didn't drive until now, borrowing my mother's automatic hybrid to commute 60 miles a day. given the state of the car buying market, would it make more sense to relearn manual and buy a decent used manual rather than an extra expensive automatic that'll presumably only depreciate? with work and housing I don't yet know whether I'll be commuting 60 miles a day or only doing short trips around a small city for the next year, so it's hard to plan based on that. my budget was originally less than £10k but there's some leeway if the automatic situation is truly dire. also ideally looking around the west midlands region but potentially could drive to wales to pick up a good deal. thank you!

Second, a far higher percentage of younger folk have no interest in driving beyond getting from A to B, so they are not going to bother choosing an option which requires more input.. .
And yet quite a lot of these "younger folk" spend quite a lot of time on computer games, which I assume (negligable experience) gives similar hand-eye coordination satisfaction but which doesn't get you anywhere....
saw a deal for primary 4 on ats and bought it, shop called saying they out of stock and got sport 3 for 20 more. its for ford fiesta and i got no tyres knowledge, just want to replace tyres as current one out of tread.
should i go for it or look for a cheaper option Read more
yeah replacing all four and its just 20 in total. will there be any difference how they will last
It's not just that they'll not last as long, and thus cost a lot more over their lifetime, its that they are designed for performance/handling and not comfort (including cabin noise) and fuel efficiency....
Did not use car for about a month. Battery went flat so took it out got it recharged. Reinstalled it and took out the spark plugs and cleaned them throughly.
Engine now cranks over but car will not start.
Car was working like a champ prior to battery going flat so I cannot believe it is a starter motor problem or other major part going down. I feel sure it's someting simple/goofy.
Mention was made that I may need to override the immobiliser perhaps??
Any help much appreciated.

If this is a modern car I understand its quite common to have to exorcise demons after doing anything to it.
There'll be special incantations known only to the priesthood at the dealership....
Hi just wondering, if one buys a car that says that is rated to be able to do 200 miles on a full charge, how many miles does the battery lose when you got the heating on all the time, say for example on the equivalent setting of medium hot in a diesel car? Is there a way to have heating without using the main battery? Read more
Probably just as accurate as the Range Guess o meter in EVs themselves. The consensus on our EV forum is ignore the GOM. Watch the battery % meter. That's accurate. So if your EV has a advertised 200m range for every 10% you should be getting 20miles. If your only getting 15 then you know that your real range will be 150. Like ICE cars keep the speed down, don't do harsh acceleration and you can even improve on 20m per 10%. But a quick 10 mins on a high powered charger can boost you 30 40%. Home charge costs well I just got onto a tarriff with a window of 4.5p per kw per night. So really cheap to run but requires a bit more forward planning than using ICE. Imo it only works for me as I have a home charger and a garage. If you don't have those it might not work as well for you.
Hi Guys / Girls
Another advice topic, sorry!
I’m after a general car for towing the family around in, myself my partner and my little girl and hopefully another one on the way soon. I work one day in the office (140 mile round trip mainly motorway miles) every week and then 4 days at home pottering around to the post office / shops etc. I don’t know if I should be swaying towards diesel for the motorway miles I do one day a week or stick to a petrol for the day to day running’s it’ll do for the majority of the week.
My budget is £14k with the hope I’ll get some on a part ex for my current VW golf. ( I can’t be bothered with the hassle of selling private appreciate I’ll not get as much).
So far I’ve looked at a 65 plate Nissan qashqai 1.6 diesel tekna for £13.8k at my local Nissan dealer with 13500 miles on clock, beautiful drive and very nice inside and out. Thoughts?
More swayed towards an SUV however please send me any suggested cars I should be looking at, very obvious but I need it to be reliable (that’s what they all say) and quite economical. However I do get a fuel card with work so fuel isn’t really an issue.
Thanks again, Read more
The 1.4turbo will be all the power you'll need.
My electric Corsa had only done 7k miles at the first service. I was informed that due to both rear discs badly scored the pads and discs need replaced. I have contacted Vauxhall to no avail. Just not interested. Is 7k for discs acceptable nowadays?
Dealership said they can’t help as Vauxhall would not pay them for doing the work as the discs only have 6k mile warranty.
How bad is this? Read more

Wowser that's an well known Australian slang term for Killjoy, an out there puritanical spoilsport. Just saying....not a larrikin myself.
You can’t go from no compression to a fully working engine just by turning the key on and off . It’s likely you have a problem with the egr valve . Very common failure on this engine, and not a cheap fix .
