You don't describe the "seals" as o-rings. Are they actually square section rings seated in a groove? If so, square section sealing rings are interchangeable with the correct size and section of O-rings.

So my son's gf is off to the US for 3 months. She has a 2011 Mini Cooper S and she is wondering what to do with it. It will be parked off road. Options appear to be:

- Just park up and see if starts when she returns. Advantage being it could be SORN and maybe there'd be a small insurance saving.... Read more

Ideally it wants a decent run (20 miles +) every 3 or 4 weeks. It is not just the risk of flat battery, but rusty/seized/failed brakes, clutch, handbrake, aircon, tyre flat spots etc.

See what it costs to get son insured - if he has a reasonable driving record it may not be that much. Balance the small cost saving of SORN + insurance against the possible costs of repair if anything fails during a 3 month lay up....

When we moved here 7 years ago, the garden fences on all sides were in poor condition, None of the neighbours wanted to contribute, so between us and next door (a semi) (they are renting) I paid for 6 good qualirty panels to be slotted into the concrete posts, also a bit higher for privacy. At the bottom, put in new posts and 4 foot high fence and trellis above that so we had a partial view of the greenery behind. Looking out from the back on the left was a fence but two elderly neighbours who didn't want to contribute, so put new posts in where needed and slotted in some panels with trellis on top, to stop the dog jumping over.

At the front on the right was a fence with a neighbour in another street, so bottom of his garden and side of my driveway. Had decking and a children's play area attached to fence posts. Neighbour said if i touched it and damage to the decking would have to fix it.... Read more

ORB you've probably replaced fences that didn't even belong to you. Living in a not old* (1992) property I have a copy of the plans. It clearly shows who owns what. Unfortunately as an End of Terrace most of it actually is mine....ah well nice in theory.

I obtained the deeds for my property from HM Land Registry (GR130276) and it doesn't indicate which owner is responsible for whichever side of fences/walls. I've read that is the case with some title deeds....

Don't seem to get very good results with my cheapo combo wire stripper and crimping tool.

My breakout for the fan relay failed on the way to the 6-monthly Taiwan vehicle inspection, with typical Sod's Law timing, and I had to wire the fan permanently on. The inspection people either didn't notice this or didn't think it was any of their business (I don't THINK it should be a UK MOT fail either), so it didn't prevent a pass, while boiling over during inspection would have.... Really grateful to all your contributions which help to explain the damage to the Range Rover .

There appears to be no fluid in the Range Rover air suspension system. It is very much like the system in my Audi A8. Four air bags, a high pressure reservoir, a compressor, various sensors and an electronic valve control unit which sends the filtered air to where it is needed. Here is a diagram.........

Smart Motorways by their very design are "Killers"

No doubt the public sector types who thought up these so called Smart Motorways will be in line for Knighthoods and other gongs.

I avoid them like the plague they are.

strange but true

I've had an accident where I'm at fault. Ran into someone on a roundabout who stalled as I was pulling out behind them .
Now, the vehicles been recovered and I'm trying to contact the insurers to arrange for an inspection. The van is driveable ,apparently , but they're thinking about a write-off.

Its olden but golden, wasn't ready to say goodby to it yet..sob..and won't be able to afford another, and I've just had a very sound repair done on the roof , and just m.o.t'd .It was going to be good for a few more years and has very little corrosion. ... Read more

strange but true

It’s in my possession , I’m confused though as I’ve been led to believe I only have two outcomes- they write it off and then you have to get a report done if you buy it back, and this then makes it hard to insure , or they don’t write it off ,

I have had this car for nearly a year. It has 10k on the clock. I dont drive it at night as the dipped beam is so poor its dangerous. I upgraded the bulbs to Philips GT200 but the car is still unsafe to drive because of poor visibility. I took it to Halfords and no problems on their machine. Took it to Citroen and again no problems found on their machine.... Read more

Strange you should mention that. I read a user review online who mentioned that the dipped beam was so poor he returned the car and "style over functiuon" was his exact comment. However with so many of these on the road and few other owners complaining about this I think it cant be a universal problem.
