All my cars have had pedestrian/cyclist avoidance technology, usually the more advanced rack and pinion system, though my Lada had the older recirculating ball box type.

Never had any trouble penetrating fog and mist, but the older system on the Lada was unable to fully penetrate a Ford Fiesta which pulled out in front of me, though it had a pretty good try.

I've just renewed my insurance on my 67 registered car and wanted to remove the one additional driver on the policy, a friend who's moved away. The resulting premium would have increased from £218 to £288 (checked with two different call centre employees), so I made no change. Where's the sense in that pricing? My friend is of similar age to me, and, like me, with no history of offences or accidents, or relevant medical conditions. The call centre people (as for the insurer, think bulldog) hadn't got a clue either. Has anybody out there had a similar experience, or can you help, Honest John? Read more

A greater mileage would seem to indicate an increased risk of accidents but it would also lower the value of the vehicle; that does not seem to be an adequate explanation though.

Maybe insurance company statistics show lower claims for higher mileage drivers: more motorway miles and fewer local roads....

In my part of the country, about 10% of (mostly elderly) drivers signal right on the approach to a roadabout, using lane 2. And then suddenly signal left and move to lane one. Leaving on exit 2.

It's not a change of mind - I followed one recently, and he/she did it consistently....

I like the Fabia and there’s no reason not to buy one as a small family car but I wouldn’t run a small capacity petrol motor like this as a taxi. While this particular engine hasn’t flagged up any inherent issues I’m aware of its rare to see any big mileage examples so we just don’t know how it would stand up to 40/50k P/A taxi use. To me they’re way too small also. I wouldn’t rush to call out a driver I knew had a cramped supermini that’s really not much bigger in the back than a Fiesta. Again, I’d go a size up and I’d either go older or spend more on a Toyota Auris or Corolla hybrid instead, both of which are well liked by the taxi trade for their robust and long lived running gear and general reliability. It’s a no brainer for me regarding what I’d buy to taxi with.
