The world has changed massively in the last 60 years. In the UK we are largely responsible for the way in which those changes have affected us, and in relation to the car industry:

  • we spent decades suffering the consequences of inadequate management and obstructive unions. So we now have no domestically owned car industry
  • we joined the EU opening the floodgates to coompetitors from Germany, France etc
  • joining the EU encouraged inward car investment mainly from Japan. Having left it we may now lose the associated jobs and economic benefits
  • shipping cars around the world on large ferries has reduced shipping costs to the point where they are no longer a barrier to imports (or exports)
  • making cars using components produced anywhere in the world is commonplace - manufacturing cost considerations prevail
  • cars have changed from being objects of desire requiring significant design and technical skill, to (in large part) four wheeled "white goods"

Nostaglia is great but I am not sure what the point is!

Are these a bit of a con or do you receive a genuine additional amount?

The reason I ask is that I have a 19 year old Yaris (and it looks its age) that is cleary worth very little, if anything. I am looking to replace it and was originally thinking of a 2-3 year old Hyundia I10. However if these scrappage deals are geniune it may be worth considering new, especially as the new shape I10 looks an upgrade from the previous model - any thoughts ... Read more

Hi.

I have never had Xenons before and so have no idea what I am doing with them. The original owner had this system fitted and I never thought much more about it until one of the bulbs failed.... Read more

How much?! I was looking to buy a Focus ST in 2010 and it's list price at the time was £19,545. Compared to the similar petrol model now (£33260) that represents just over a 70% price increase in 10 years. That's about 4 times as much as the average actual UK inflation rate over that time. Who says car makers aren't getting greedy, or artificially closing the price gap between ICE and electric cars to avoid lowering the prices of EVs as manufacturing costs become less? Read more

but to be fair, its not the same spec/engine/trim level as 2010, so there would be some cost increase anyway, difficult to compare apples to apples on that aspect. But i agree still pricey.

Car Expert on YT also has good dragstrip test recently with manual and auto MK4 ST, auto turns out to be pretty good, with the 7 speed box (was usual 8 speed with 2nd gear removed for the ST version).

My son-in-law's PCP lease ended in March, the lease company said they couldn't collect the car "due to lockdown". (This is clearly a lie, on a daily basis I see recovery trucks moving cars around).

Anyway, they suggested he keep the car and continue payments, which, as he was shielding and working from home he refused.... Read more

I fully concur with SLO and Concrete. I deal with many Leasing Companies on both Leasing (Personal and Corporate clients) and Contract Purchase. They are 2 very distinct types of contract.

The Companies I deal with have, invariably, been more than fair to their customers during this last 3 months and, therefore, I am of the opinion that the driver, in this instance, has not complied with their obligations. READ THE CONTRACT is the only information that I can offer as advice, until we are given the Full Facts.

Been advised of an uneconomical repair with my car, which has always been mechanically trustworthy until the keyless start failed me before lockdown. I am in turmoil over what to do as the repairs will be in excess of the value of the car. It has done 105,000 miles and needs check a new ID controller unit and Keyless start control unit to 'see if it helps' as they are unsure of the issue due to an unexpected response on the ECU. They say it will then need reprogramming and resting but that other work may need doing if these modules don't sort the issue. It has done me a good service and in the climate of the times, I have to wonder whether it is worth attempting to fix or to sell as spare and repairs. Thanks in advance for any replies. Read more

It is basically stuck in that state, even in P too but all good responses in N. I have to disconnect the battery to prevent it draining.

Every time I take my 2010 Berlingo for its MOT it fails on a rubber boot split on the front track rod. If this happens every time, isn't it a design fault? Read more

Do they fit a genuine one? Or is it some old one laying about in the back of their workshop.

So considering taking my car, which has done nearly 200k miles to halfords for a car service, as they seem to have some good service deals at the moment. What are your thoughts, as have always used Ford service but as the car is now very high mileage, I am looking at costs. What are your thoughts regarding halfords? They seem to have fairly good reviews, on Trust pilot. Many thanks. Read more

I’d rather fish out a good reliable independent from friends recommendations personally. A good backstreet garage will be busy and usually have a few taxis lying around in various states of reassembly. This is too high in the miles to maintain at a main dealer, they’re useless at making di and mending and will typically replace parts rather than properly fault finding like a good independent can. But standards vary hugely so recommendations are key.
