Seems to depend where you live as to whether winter tyres are popular. Up in Highland region tyre suppliers have been recommending winter tyres on the driving wheels for years and it seems that most drivers who go out of the main towns fit them . It is unusual up here to find a car with 4 winter tyres though. Read more

How ridiculous that UK insurers try to milk this as an opportunity to increase premiums. If you go to your car dealer or any half-decent tyre retailer they will ensure that the tyres you fit are the best ones for your car model. Only in rip-off Britain would car insurers see this as yet another business opportunity.

I recently bought a second hand Ford Mondeo (2012) Titanium Estate which came with a Sony DAB radio.

The car battery has been flat for a couple of times in the morning - the RAC cam out yesterday and thought the problem must be the battery (the alternator was working fine, and there was no drain on the battery). Hence brand new RAC-fitted battery yesterday. ... Read more

Thanks. I'll double check the dashboard - but I'm pretty sure it all goes off.

But the radio - even if turning on when the ignition off - doesn't say 'one hour mode'....

Can anyone out there suggest a good mid-size estate car for between £10,000 and £15,000 that i will get decent MPG from? It's mostly for B road and city driving. It needs to be a good size boot for my partner's mobility scooter. Read more

One of those questions where a car supermarket is the initial answer.

There are plenty of small estates, MPVS out there, but with a very specific requirement to meet you can't do better than visiting one, with no money or credit cards so you can avoid the pressure sales tactics and browse their stock.

Found this by accident and thought I would pass it on to the 4x4 community and people who drive on tracks/ off road. It looks like a great idea- see website.

I suppose bolting an old wheel on the outside of you wheels might work in some Heath Robinson situation, but few 4x4's are fitted with a locking front diff (not many fitted with a locking rear one come to that)

Funny you should mention that GB, I saw Ice Road Truckers the other week and one of the guys got himself out of a stuck situation using spare webbing strapping wrapped around the rear wheel and tied to a nearby tree. Didn't know that they had locking diffs otherwise the other side would have spun uselessly. I suppose that's the least they could do with considering the terrain.

I found out about www.mycarcheck.com today. For £3 plus your network message charge you get a very basic vehicle check based on the registration number: - no of owners, make and model, if colour has been changed, if stolen, if scrapped, if Cat C or D, and valuation. A friend was taken aback to find his car is Cat C! If he has known (private sale) he would probably walked away or dropped his offer.

Yes, the Avensis would seem to be ther best car in this category.

But one thing to remember about the Avenis is that it has an Electronic Parking Brakes, which are prone to give trouble at a certain age....

Hi all,

I have a Daihatsu Terios 2007, love the car, had it since August, but oddly the total mileage has disappeared from the dashboard, was there when I bought it. Everything else seems to be working ok on the dashboard. I've read the manual but can't see anywhere it says about mileage, doesnt even show Kilometres, so somewhere something has changed !!!... I would check fuses first. If they are all good, then may be worth trying a battery disconnect for 5 mins.

What an epic start to the new series.
Clarkson leaves the BBC building in London in pouring rain looking pretty depressed, heads straight to Heathrow and jumps on a BA plane arrives in California , hires aMustang from Europcar (All product placement) and is then joined by May and Hammond who like the Government versions left their previous employ after a major upset.

Glad to see Clarson still as outspoken as ever, especially when reviewing the Ferrari. No wonder they have been difficult to deal with!

But the photography in the new format 400 hz ? Is just brilliant .

Some references don't travel too week ,such s the reference to Carol Vorderman which met with stony silence.

Hats off to Amazon who have given Clarkson the free rein that he never was allowed at the BBC.

I'm sure we will see him demolishing his house sometime in the series.

Wonder what Chris Evans must be thinking of if he ever watches how the programme should be done! Read more

I used to like the technical aspects of the challenges, although of course these were glossed over in the final edit.

There's a book on kindle about the behind the scenes stuff that's a good read....
