Found this by accident and thought I would pass it on to the 4x4 community and people who drive on tracks/ off road. It looks like a great idea- see website.

In the UK a number of Land Rover specialists deal in this type of kit. If it is going to be used in anger you really need some training and the equipment must be scrupulously maintained. I believe my late father saw someone killed when a chain snapped - straps/chains can be under enormous tension.

I can confirm what happens when a steel cable snaps under tension.

I got my kid brother (unintentionally) many years ago, hit above his eye by about an inch, and has the scar to prove it.

Be very careful!

I'm a little surprised that someone hasn't designed a winch to take the same webbing strapping (could be geared to spread it across a wider roller) as used in span sets for load securing.

One thing they don't do is turn into a lethal snake likely to remove limbs eyes or teeth should one snap.

I suppose bolting an old wheel on the outside of you wheels might work in some Heath Robinson situation, but few 4x4's are fitted with a locking front diff (not many fitted with a locking rear one come to that) and by the time you've bought and installed a front locker you might as well fit a real winch...funnily enough a wheel so bolted would be ideal for teh webbing strap i mentioned, but can't see it doing your steering any good having several tons of force applied that way.

Dyneema cable is strong as steel, but is much lighter and doesn't store as much energy. It's more expensive though.

Funny you should mention that GB, I saw Ice Road Truckers the other week and one of the guys got himself out of a stuck situation using spare webbing strapping wrapped around the rear wheel and tied to a nearby tree. Didn't know that they had locking diffs otherwise the other side would have spun uselessly. I suppose that's the least they could do with considering the terrain.

Interesting idea.

A long time ago, we had a LR with a capstan winch. Can't remember having to use it in anger though!
