I have a 2011 Renault Scenic 1.5 tdi with 87,000 miles on the clock. The cam belt is due and I've been warned it may well need the water pump doing at the same time, the garage estimate that it will be £750ish (inc servicing).

I now have to make a decision over whether to change it as I think the trade in value will only be about £3k.... Read more

Financially, the best thing to do is keep the Scenic until it doesn't work any more. It will only lose another £500 or so in value over the next year, whereas putting 30k miles on a nearly new car will reduce it by £3000 or more. That means the Scenic only has to last another year (which it should easily do) to cost the same or less.

If you buy a nearly new car now, in three years time it will have 90k miles on it and worth no more than your Scenic is now so whatever you have spent is effectively gone. If you keep the Scenic for another three years, it will be worth next to nothing and have 150k miles on but will have cost you little extra in the meantime....

One for your Reviews 'Good and Bad' section.

My wife has a 24,000 miles, 2013 Audi A3 1.8 TFSI, and the 'Thermo-management' unit (thermostat to most people) has failed. - Just after the warranty expired.
This gives an engine warning light. The car runs fine it just runs cooler than it should.
Audi and my local specialist have diagnosed that the system needs to be replaced, Audi want £800.00 and the local specialist £550.00.

A normal thermostat would not fail after 24,000 miles and if it did the cost would be minimal.

Audi are refusing to contribute as this is an 'isolated case'.

A warning to 1.8 TFSI owners!

I've been considering buying a car at a BCA auction that is a finance house repossession with no V5 and a private plate. A quick Google search revealed that the plate is actually currently for sale but HPi and VOSA MoT records show that the private plate on the car is currently the correct plate for this car. I've found out the original 59 plate that was first registered on the car when new and that comes up blank if I try to make any HPi or VOSA check with it.

My question is, if I was to buy this car and apply for a new V5 in my name, how do I know whether to apply for the new V5 on the private plate or the original 59 plate? Also, once I apply for the V5 do I need to declare the car as SORN and can I do this online?

I used to be in the trade and in the 1990s I bought a few repos at auction and simply applied for a new V5 and waited a few weeks for it to arrive (apart from a few weeks delay and the extra owner it wasn't really a problem) but I am concerned that I don't really know if the private plate will come with this particular car or not? The auction is unable to confirm this either way in the absence of a V5. Is there an easy way of calling the DVLA to ask if the private plate has been retained by the previous keeper or whether it is the correct plate for the car? I'd much prefer the original 59 plate to the pretty naff and very low value private plate! The car is currently still taxed but given the change in rules a couple of years ago should I SORN the car as soon as I buy it?

Much appreciate any advice Read more

Hi I have a scratch on the bumper of my Nissan Qashqai . Bumper is, of course, plastic. Colour is black and scratch is showing white.

Its a fairly fine straight line. Now, my first reaction is to use a fine tipped black marker to fill it in. But, I was wondering if there is anything else that would be better?... Read more

A week before I wanted to start the process of trading in my immaculate Hyundai Santa Fe, I put a 10" scratch round the bumper corner - I got quotes from a local smart repairer working from a unit, £150 and a mobile, £120.

I went with the smart repairer as it would be done indoors so less chance of dust contamination and his use of heaters to finish the job - he did an excellent job, and even touched up some chips at the rear I'd not spotted....

Yesterday I suffered a puncture and had to fit the spacesaver spare. These are limited to 50mph and I would not have wanted to do more as it was raining heavily - I could feel tha I had an odd wheel. What was more scary was that to get home I covered about ten motorway miles. At one time I was terrified I was going to be rear ended when an artic raced up behind me despite it being relatively quiet in the middle lane. After tailgating for a few hundred yards he obviously concluded I was not going to go any faster and overtook. It is not about time manufacturers were made to provide full size spares? And as for this nonsense of providing no spare this is utter nonsense - the damage my tyre sustained would have left me stranded! Read more

From where you come from I'd use the A414 and then the B653 which brings you right to the airport rather than the new M1 connection.
