Hi all
Years ago my Dad always told me you could drive a diesel through a flooded road but not a petrol car. Now I'm due to be driving more frequently on a road liable to flooding, is this true or just a myth? And if it is true would it apply to older diesels rather than newer ones?... Read more
I need advise please
My Astra g is over heating. apon start up all is good. the temp gauge takes along time to even move to the first notch. as the car heats up, the gauge quickly moves up to 80 and the water in the reservoir starts to boil and steam out.... Read more
Thanks for the advice. I was trying to only go down this route as a last resort due to where it sits in the engine, but needs must. thanks to all for commenting
Over the last few days I've been involved in the rather curious process of negotiating to buy a car via email. Last weekend I made an enquiry about a car that I saw on an online site, and a salesman from the dealer rang me to discuss the vehicle, after which we commenced a conversation via email. Its a main dealer and the email is genuine, so I'm not dealing with a chap who owns a laptop, lives in a shed in Dar-es-Salaam and who is not interested in selling anything but my bank details.
Over a period of days we negotiated what I thought was a good part ex on my current car and a significantly reduced price on the vehicle being sold, as well as 12 months warranty. Only remaining bugbear (and yes, I knew from the start that I would have to travel, but initially would have been able to get there) is that the garage is 60 miles away and its become apparent over the last few days that I don't really have the time to drive there to see the car.... I have bought four cars at a distance - the longest being over 250 miles (Worthing to Manchester). One was a mistake as I did not ask enough questions. The other three were as good as expected if not better.
My current E350CDi estate was four years old when I bought it. The (small independent) dealer videoed the car, took lots of photos and emailed them to me. We agreed a price and he drove the car to me (only 50 miles). I paid him via internet banking and took him to the station to go home. ...
I don't know anything about Welding really but I've been failed on my '02 plate 206 on two bits of welding, one looks straight forward enough but the other looks like I might struggle. It's the bit of metal that usually attaches the rear suspension bump stop. I have attached photos, can someone please tell me if a decent welder should have much trouble doing this? And how do I re attach the bump stop?
Oh it turns out I can't attach pictures. Any thoughts/ advice/ assistance?

You say you don't know anything about welding.
For the sake of safety - take it somewhere where they know what they are doing-please.
Wife has an insignia from motability, done 14 k and front tyres now well worn
Replacements supplied by kwick fit but they are adamant they won't replace them till less than 2mm
Was serviced by Vauxhall who said were on 2.5 mm and should be replaced immediately but not according to kwick fit ! Normally they are pushing you to buy no tyres before this point.
Car is horrible in rain , worse in snow so not keen to use in poor weather but not going to wear tyres any more sitting in driveway.
Any helpful advice ?

I am not surprised that Kwik Fit (and other chains) have a ready supply of customers. My local independent tells me of customers who roll up with cars making expensive noises, 500ml of engine oil/coolant,
Its called dumbing down or the race to the bottom and we can't be far from the finish line, a drastic rethink of the whole education system is needed and mass sackings of those who have led us down this road, stop teaching youngster to become good little pc consumer drones and start teaching them to think for themselves once again with common sense once again championed with a healthy distrust of politicians and other undesirables bearings gifts the recipient is paying for themselves....
Hello. Trying to fit a Halfords battery to my mk6 Astra. Because the new battery is a couple of millimetres taller than the standard battery, the battery retaining clamp will not locate on the retaining nut. Hence cannot clamp battery down to the tray. Has anyone else met this problem? Surely there must be some adjustment somewhere? But I can’t see it. Any help would be appreciated. Read more
Had a similar experience with a Halfords battery for my Mazda - slightly narrower & 1.5 cms lower - I fixed it by inserting small wooden blocks & clamping the battery down - passed it's MoT OK about 3/4 weks later.
In your case take it back as "Not suitable" for your car.
Hi im after a hatchback car 5/6k miles a year, maximum budget of £3500. ideally mileage under 90k.

Must be plenty slipping through the net then as the biggest killer of Kias in my area of Scotland is under body rot. I’ve a work colleague who’s recently scrapped a 2006 Sportage due to serious rot, in fact you hardly see any of this gen up here at all these days despite selling reasonably well. It’s good to hear the firm is now taking things seriously but corrosion protection hasn’t been up to scratch for our damp salt coated roads to date. Hopefully newer models will prove better.
Golfs are overrated rubbish and are trading on their reputation of the past .the mk2 golf was one of the best cars ever made after that it was all downhill .ford are where vow used to be .

Not getting any prettier, either. A design that will age quickly, I suspect. But pretty exclusive at least you hardly ever see a Golf on the road now
I'm looking for an auto, about 2 to 3 years old, Focus size preferably but could be larger, minimum 2L Diesel.
When I search on Autotrader the vast majority of results are Astras with the odd Focus and a few other assorted makes.
Why are Astra autos so popular? Are these ex Motability or rental cars. I've heard mixed opinions of ex Motability cars but we've owned 2 now and they've been like new and mechanically faultless.
I would prefer a Focus over an Astra but they have the Powershift box which I believe ( perhaps wrongly ) is a dual clutch automated manual like the VAG DSG which doesn't have a good reputation.
Would either of these cars be a bad choice?

I dont understqand the ford focus hype - yes it drives nicely, but its seriously cramped even the estate version which makes living with it and having regular passengers a problem.

Whether Petrol, or Diesel powered, the outcome of driving through water of unknown depth can be a risk
I've driven (slowly) through here many times, but these weren't so lucky: newarkadvertiser.co.uk/articles/news/Flooding-Vehi...f...
