Wife has an insignia from motability, done 14 k and front tyres now well worn

Replacements supplied by kwick fit but they are adamant they won't replace them till less than 2mm

Was serviced by Vauxhall who said were on 2.5 mm and should be replaced immediately but not according to kwick fit ! Normally they are pushing you to buy no tyres before this point.

Car is horrible in rain , worse in snow so not keen to use in poor weather but not going to wear tyres any more sitting in driveway.

Any helpful advice ?

Phone Motability directly & ask for advice on what is an important safety concern you have.

Second that. Especially with weather conditions coming up, but true at any time, tyre condition and tread are crucial safety factors.

Act asap - Why is it tied to Kwik Fit ? After personal experience I would NEVER go there.

Good Luck

It's not a unique situation - some business lease companies wont replace tyres until they're down to 1.6mm.

The sooner we change to a 3mm minimum tread depth the better - but getting global agrement is painfully slow.

Kwik Fit are probably following the instructions of their customer who is not the user of the car but, the motability company.

I can honestly say for buying tyres, Kwik fit have been very good to me and I got very competitive prices buying online.

Straight, quiet road, clutch in, red line revs, dump clutch. After a dozen or so streaks of rubber are on the road return to Kwikfit.

The son of our next door but one neighbour at the previous house had/has a Mondeo on Motability. The family were off to Cornwall with the caravan and the front tyres were getting down to the limit but KwikFit would not change them since they were still above the permitted figure. So off they went and while they were on holiday they had an approved tyre shop (no idea if it was KwikFit) change the tyres as they we below the permitted figure.

A totally barking attitude. The neigbours son is paralysed from the waist down and they expect him to drive 300 miles on barely legal tyres.

Kwik Fit are Motability's tyre supplier, and can only replace tyres when authorised to do so by Motability. Pointless having a go at Kwik Fit - they'd love to supply a couple of new tyres, but wouldn't get be paid for them without an order number from Motability.

Normal with a leased car, unfortunately. I used to drive 1000 miles a week, and it was a nightmare trying to judge when to either get the mobile fitter out, or get to a fitter.

Sometimes 2.1mm to 1.6 might only be a week or two.

I heard recently of someone who was with a lease company who were refusing to change the tyres until they reached 1.6mm. I don't know how that can be done without a severe chance of being illegal.

Not having a go at Kwik Fit about this. Not (fortunately) using motability so curious about the system.

Additional reference to my experience with them unnecessary but they were far from satisfactory with me - actually needed recovery service to deal with problem. Pleased they have satisfied customers : obviously if they didn't they'd close. Luck of the Centre ?

Considering the levels of skill, relevant knowledge and attention to things like the Highway Code of many drivers these days, I am not surprised that Kwik Fit (and other chains) have a ready supply of customers.

My local independent tells me of customers who roll up with cars making expensive noises, 500ml of engine oil/coolant, not been serviced for two years, surprised to hear the engine is ruined. Or tyres all at half the recommended pressures, little surprises him.

Kwik Fit comments are irellevant, it's the lease company's attittude. Had a company car for13 years through lease company mainly Mondeos 24k a year business miles plus 10k private use.

One winter service I knew the front tyres were low and told them. 2mm 'we're not allowed to change them' . Went to KF same story as lease company said they're legal. Even rang office to complain but no joy. Couple of weeks later went back to K-F, Don't have the specifed brand (Dunlop I think from memory) Had to go to a branch of K-F in Huddersfield who had them.

Another problem believe it or not was wiper blades. Ran the car through winter one year sometimes having to fill up the washers two or three time a week. in for service said new wiper blades needed. Lease company said 'just clean them' . Service manager even apologised. Rang lease company and the 'Service Advisor' admitted she didn't even drive 'but they were changed at last service'. Bought new ones one expenses and had to explain why they weren't replaced at the service.

Get involved in leasing or any of these service schemes it all comes down to the pennies.

Its called dumbing down or the race to the bottom and we can't be far from the finish line, a drastic rethink of the whole education system is needed and mass sackings of those who have led us down this road, stop teaching youngster to become good little pc consumer drones and start teaching them to think for themselves once again with common sense once again championed with a healthy distrust of politicians and other undesirables bearings gifts the recipient is paying for themselves.

Instilling independent thinking was something proper old grammar schools were good at, and why despite it being aired to please the disaffected tory and ukippers they aint coming back in the form we know them, teach youngsters to question rewritten history etc?, i should cocoa.

Galileo, if you think your KF mate has seen it all, my very good mate of more years than i care to mention rings me thismorning, he'd just got into a 65 plate Scania artic, and the very first job any proper driver does before doing anything else is to dip the oil, what oil?, not a drop to be found on the dipstick (which it still has), i know from having one long term that 5 litres takes it from min to max...min to end of stick is about half distance of min to max...there is no hope the race is over.

For the record i once had to use another car transporter when mine was off the road and the regular driver of this unfortunate vehicle on holiday, that was the same nothing on the stick, it took 4 gallons to bring it up to the mark!!
