I am considering buying an early B8 2008 A4 2.0 TDi 143 Multitronic with 130,000 miles at auction. I've carried out some research and it sounds as though the Multitronic in the B8 is far more reliable than the earlier A4. However is it still risky buying a B8 Multitronic with this milaege and are there any quick tests I can do to check the condition of the gearbox. I've read that vibration when pulling away points to problems with the Multitronic but this will be fairly tricky to check at auction

I previously owned a similar mileage 2003 A4 2.5 TDi Multitronic which never gave any problems but I've since read that this transmission is potentially a nightmare!

Much appreciate any advice on whether the B8 Multitronic is superior and whether one with 130k is worth the risk? Read more

Not sure on the later cars but on the earlier model if the PRND display on the binnacle flashes the car has detected a problem with the transmission

Oh dear, I've just read the 'car' section to find yet again the dogma of annual oil changes every year irrespective of mileage. Reminds me of the mindset of ignorant American mechanics whose advice for 3,000m changes persisted into this century.

My 1980 TR7 which now does only a few hundred miles a year has had a mere four oil changes since its semiretirement in1990 and is none the worse for it, its well made engine using virtually no oil at 70,000m. I have just changed the expensive long life oil in my Audi A8 which was last changed nearly three years and 11,000 miles ago. I have no qualms about the longevity of its engine which will probably outlast me.... Read more

John - thanks for the compliment but please don't let's have a debate on ancient tyres. It's been done before, and wasn't pretty then.

My wife has her own car, with our daughter being the only other named driver on the policy.

In a couple of weeks, daughter will using the car daily for 4 weeks to commute to a job (early morning to mid-evening). So we were thinking of hiring a car for my wife to drive while my daughter has the car. ... Read more

The vehicle insurance policies I have, past and present cover me and named drivers for 3rd party. Policy states that we are covered so long as the car is not hired.

This is a real longshot, but perhaps someone out there knows the answer. L J K Setright’s final book entitled ‘Long Lane With Turnings’ had a picture on the front cover of a car at the top of a long lane. Does anyone know the make and model of the car? The photographer was Jorn Tomter (Norwegian) and the cover design house was Peter Marlow/Magnum.

Thanks in advance. Read more

I often wonder what the great man would think of the recent offerings from Honda ?

He chose the Prelude 4WS as his day car , admiring the low centre of gravity, design excellence , Road holding and peerless reliability....

There was general recall on my LED lights. It appears that the lights were turning off when entering a tunnel and as most tunnels require dipped headlights this was a problem.

I took my galaxcy to my local Ford service agents and they did the recall.... Read more

Forget making contact with Ford, unless you purchased your vehicle from them.

Your contract is with the selling dealership. If the lights are misaligned (hint : ask MOT garage to check if they would pass an MOT or not, you'll have to pay, but well worth it if they would fail), and then go back to the selling garage if they are not up to scratch....

Has the ATF fluid ever been changed? After 4 years, it will have deteriorated.

Can someone please help with this problem which has affected my partner,s car since she left the recirculated air control permanently on for several months.
The air con man has tried everything including smoke bombs etc to no avail. HJ recommended putting the heater on full just before switching off which helped a little but the problem continues but only when the car is first used.
Has anyone had this problem and importantly found a solution? Read more

Are you sure the smell is originating inside the ventilation system and not, for example, something like a cracked exhaust manifold leaking exhaust fumes which then get sucked into the system? (had that with an Accord).
