Got my insurance renewal the other day and I couldn't believe it it went up by £1100. I was paying £500 last year. When I queried it with them they said that insurance premium tax had risen but there had also been a lot of claims in the last 6 months.

I've been to different brokers and comparison website where I've been able to find cheaper quotes but nothing cheaper or even close to the price I was paying last year. ... Read more

What a con, they expected us to just renew and take the increase.

That has been standard practice for a long time AFAIK. Occasionally it gets newspaper space when elderly folk (like me) notice what is happening and grumble....

I had a failure of the O-rings which joins the heater matrix pipes to the pipes coming from the engine compartment. This led to anti-freeze/coolant leaking inot the driver's footwell.

Ford have no altered the spec and there is no longer a joint invovled. However they can (or will) not supply new O-rings or tell me the exact sixe of the O-rings. Their fix is to replace the whole heater matrick and pipe system at a cost of £700. They grudgingly agreed to contribute £200 after a lot of messing about.... Read more

Hi, less than a year ago I bought a used VW Tiguan for my wife from a VW Main Dealer. Its one-year warranty has a few weeks to go. I hadn't sat in it far less driven it until a few days ago. Boy, did I get a shock! Its suspension is so hard that running over a pebble sends a shockwave up your spine. It feels like something from a fairground ride or, maybe, a boneshaker of the 1920s. Yes, my wife didn't notice in course of doing the 1000 miles for the shopping. I contacted VW with the car's VIN. They told me it had a factory-fitted Sports suspension. Mystery solved. My wife and I are in our 76th. year of life, and we'd never have considered such a vehicle but no mention of its suspension was made by the salesman. My question is: have I any recourse to the law over this? Can I claim my money back? It was, I emphasise, a VW Main Dealer. I'd much appreciate any advice. Read more

I feel a little more sympathetic than some of my friends above! It's possible that the dealer bought the car in for resale and didn't know either. But no, they're right to say you haven't got any recourse in this case.

If your wife doesn't seem to mind, maybe you can live with it: alternatively, get some advice from a professional about the possiblity of smaller wheels and/or different tyres, either of which will improve the ride. If you do change, you should tell your insurance company.

Have you had a full diagnostic check carried out ?

It could be the EGR or injectors, yes. But it could also be a sensor fault, or a myriad of any other possibilities....

Need some advice,

I bought a 3 years old VW Golf diesel on the 5th of August - and it has high mileage. I have a 3 year warranty with it. I checked everything out when I got it but by the time I drove it home, I got this engine management light flashing and catalytic converter light permanently on. I took it back to the dealer on the 9th August which they replaced the exhaust sensor. It worked fine until the 23rd of August - loss of power, same light faults again. Back to the dealer again on the 25th August and didnt get it back on the 3rd September. It turned out the same sensor was faulty.
Same problem (flashing engine management and permanently on catalytic converter) arose again on the 12th October - had my garage to check the codes which then worked fine until 19th October - now I've been without my car for 5 days now.

Could be that other(never seen that on one before sir) Golf Diesel fault, the EGR valve, helpfully buried deep down making it something like a 5 hour fix.

My wifes Discovery has had a pair of shocks fitted to the back end and an advisory for the MOT is to update the front also. I intend to fit a complete set of 4 and wonder if anyone can tell me the best ones to use? 2inch lift available would also be nice, what do Ineed to do to the ECU to update from air to gas shock? thanks, Mike. I was going to add some coolant to my car but when I unscrewed the coolant cap the centre piece stayed in the tank, what would be the easiest way to remove it and is the car safe to drive until I replace it. Assistance appreciated. Read more

If it's anything like a Volvo truck, it might have a filter on the filler neck. These used to get clogged and make it difficult to get any washer fluid into the reservoir.

I had to use my foglights the other night and noticed only 1 comes on at the back, is this something that needs amended (because in my world there should be one on each side, unlike these ridiculous new machines with one reverse light!) or is there only meant to be one comes on? I've scowered the internet to find out but all I can find is websites trying to sell gear. Any help would be most appreciated. Cheers. Read more

I am a great fan of symmetrical rear lighting and cannot fathom for the life of me why manufacturers mess around with dummy red or white lenses to camouflage their penny pinching. Why can't we have a universal standard of TWO reversing lights - one each side - for maximum visibility and ONE central foglight?
