Last year I was driving a 20 y.o. Vectra 2.5 V6. This year I am driving a 12 y.o X-type with a 2.1 V6. The Vectra was the faster car. However my reneal came through today and the premium is 120% higher. It seems an incredible increase for a car that is worth maybe 2 - 2.5 times more. Both prices were/are with max NCB protected. Time to shop around after 5 years with the same company. Read more

My, now previous, insurer was the most competitive over the last few years - I did always use the price comparison websites.

This year, they decide to add NCD protection as a non optional addition. I pointed out this would place them at a disadvantage when comparing prices, but they wouldn't budge....

If you buy on line make sure it is a model you have driven. A friend did not and traded in in after six months as he could not get comfortable. When I was looking for a car recently quite a few did not feel right!

Hi I have a Fiesta 1.4tdci 57 plate and this morning I started it but then it cut out after 3-4 seconds and refused to restart. I used the hand pump and it started but this time only for about a second or two, tried same again with same results. Any ideas ... Read more

I can't say I've noticed it before but this morning I can't read half the messages posted as adverts have invaded the right hand side of the page. The columb covers about a third or the underlaying text and can't be shifted? I've tried altering the page size but no joy .... any ideas?

What was the best model of the Ford Cortina range, M1, 2 to 3, where rust and reliability is concerned. And is it better to go for the bigger engines. Also were the automatics any good?

Hi, basically i have recently swapped my car with someone else, now the deal was a straight forward swap with me giving the other person 250 pounds cash ontop which i have done. Now my bank confirms the transfer has gone through to the correct account and everything however the person in question is saying they have not received it and is demanding another 250 pounds or he is sending off the logbook as the vehicle i swapped for being scrapped. Now theres no way im paying another 250 pounds to him, so my question is if he sends his log book off as the vehicle being scrapped, what are my optioms? Is there anything i can do or tell the DVLA? Google "car swap scam" and see if anything seems familiar, it certainly sounds like there's a risk it's a variation on the theme.

If it's a scam, it's a damned stupid one. Bank account details, beautifully traceable....

Hi,
I'm looking to scrap my 2005 Ford Ka as it needs too many repairs- most recently it needs a new alternator.
I've been quoted around £35 to pick up and scrap the car. However, the battery in the car is brand new and hardly been used.
Is it possible to get more than £35 for the car and is the battery worth removing and keeping as its was only fitted three weeks ago?
Thanks! Read more

A colleague with an old Micra thought he could do better by putting the car through the auction (needed extensive welding). By the time he paid the fees he ended up with less money than the scrappy offered. If you add to this the fact he had to take it there and arrange a lift back it was a pointless exercise!

At the end of the day a few £10s of pounds is irrlevent to the total cost f car ownership.

In 2015 I hired a company to refit my bathroom whilst I was on holiday. On return we found the job incomplete. We paid 75% of the total bill but the remainder was to be paid on completion, 'when you are satisfied'. We still have several issues despite the company returning several times and, 12 months on other problems have presented themselves. The company have started Small Claims proceedings and the hering is set for the end of November. Originally I didn't issue a counterclaim as I just wanted a quiet life but, having now seen their 'witness statement' and the bare-faced lies presented therein and having spent many hours phoning CAB, Consumer Advice, the courts et al, I've finally got angry.

I brought in 2 separate companies to quote for the work needed to rectify the problems caused by the original fitters who charged me for their services (fair enough, in my mind) but in the witness statement it is stated that I brought in 'their own paid workforce, which is not 'independent'.' How then do I get an 'independent' report without paying the company for their time?... Read more

Does the fuel gauge also read incorrectly? If so suspect the voltage stabilizer behind the instrument panel. I changed a few of them in the 1980s when I worked in a Vauxhall dealer. If not check the temperature sender wire for chafing to earth. If there is no chafe to earth on the wire then the temperature gauge itself is most likely faulty, and I have changed them too.

Removing the instrument panel on these is very easy. Remove two screws on the upper side of the bezel and remove it. Then remove the single screw at the top and middle of the instrument panel. Pull it out and disconnect the speedo cable and the multiplug. A word of warning though. Disconnect the battery before you do anything. The dash frame is metal and has sharp edges. It's easy to scrape the printed circuit against it and short circuit it. If you do it will partly melt and be ruined.
