We bought a 2011 Jaguar XFR 5 months ago in May 2011 from a main dealer in Cambridgeshire. On Sunday, 2 minutes after re-fuelling (yes, with petrol!) the engine warning light came on, power was lost and it started blowing out smoke and smelling. It was towed to our local (Hampshire) dealer yesterday. Today we learn that it needs at least one new injector (£1014 all in), possibly 2 or 3 (up to £1800).

We have a named components warranty, but injectors are not included. The car has only done 30,000 miles and has been well maintained. Is there anything we can do to claw back some of the repair bill from the main dealer. In addition, could this have been caused by petrol contamination at the fuel station and if so how do we go about investigating this? Should this really have happened at such low mileage?... With the price of oil at a 12 month high and Sterling dropping faster than a stone, will any Brexiteers have second thoughts about their decision in June, when their weekly fill-up increases by several pounds shortly? Read more

I hope that Sterling does recover it's value as on a lighter note, I used to enjoy holidays in Switzerland at something like CHF2.4/£ back in 2001, (even better CHF3.3/£ in the late 80's), but now as it is CHF1.2.....

I was told about an app which gives useful information on any car you my be looking to buy. By entering the reg you get vehicle deatails, mot history with advisories and mileage history. It's called 'vehicle smart' but as always I suppose buying a good used car is never going to be easy but this app may give some usful information. Read more

I didn't get as far as finding out what it needed to access. It requires iOS 8 which would be likely to make my hand-me-down iPhone 4s useless.

The wife appears more than happy with the examples I have been looking at on Autotrader. I have no qualm with a Subaru or a Volvo either, but I think the Audi has pipped it in the wife stakes, maybe because it is a touch classier and the level of equipment is so high. I still haven't made a decision yet however, because the lynch pin of it all revolves around us moving house in future and planning changes of employment.

I'm not worried about Audi dealer customer satisfaction as I won't be using one to look after the car- as I mentioned I have a relative whose company and techs are more than capable of looking after the car (same is true if I had another Scoob or a Volvo TBH). As we will be buying the thing second hand anyway and running it on until old age, I am not too concerned with having main dealer stamps in the book, nor am I worried about using genuine parts either- once it has reached old age, say 150,000 or so, depending on finances at the time I'll probably just p/x against something else....

You have not given us much to go on which engine size is it?

As mentioned above there are faults that can develop and make it look like a new turbo is needed when it might be a strip and clean can be done, however you need to do the maths . Taking off and cleaning an old turbo then putting it back on is a similar cost to the labour charge to fit a new turbo plus extra for cleaning time. Obviously the cost of a new turbo needs to be added in if its needed but if you take the old one off and its goosed you are on the way to a new turbo anyway....

Hi all, I have an issue with my key starting my car, when I try starting it does nothing but the pats light flashed continuously for about 1 min then stopped, I waited to see a sequence for the code but there was nothing, my spare key blade had broke so I tried using the blade with the chip out of it taped next to ignition and car stated fine, I then removed chip and tried main key, car started fine, next time I came to start car.....nothing again.....pats light flashes but gives no code....any ideas? Non start and a flashing pats light is an indication that the key chip is not recognised.Could be corrupt or incorrectly programmed.Cheapest option is to tape the working chip to the plastic key reader around ignition lock.As you have only one working key,you can't programme another key yourself.

If its a slight rock side to side it might be tyre tread wearing to point where tread is out of straight, and get worse as tread wears, I`ve had that on several cars over the years including my Rover 25 V reg.

A new tyre/s sort it out and found Michelin to be worst for it!

I wouldn't buy a car like an M3 privately either. Buy from a dealer or even better get your friendly dealer to source one for you. You'll pay for the privilege but you have more legal protection and no dealer worth their name is going to be caught selling a car that is legally dodgy.

I would get a BMW specialist to look after it. There are a good dose of them around, they know the cars, often have dealer trained techs and don't rip your eyes out for the labour side of things....
