Ford Lookers heard a knocking noise from my Ford Fiesta Black Special Edition and requested time for further investigation. I declined and was happy to carry on. You can imagine how much money I would have spent with official Ford technicians !!! Turns out the heater motor was slowly on its way out. It's a pig to get to it. What happens is the noise slowly gets louder and louder. The bearings go, the blades shatter to bits. Access to the heater motor is via the dashboard for my Fiesta. Yup...whole dashboard got to come out. I hightly advise breakers yard for the part and a 3rd party garage to fit it. I saved nearly £200-00 quid and the part came from a sports model. If it is the heater motor, you've got 2 years before it drives you mad. Also, when the heater motor is faulty, blows the thermal resistor that gives you the hot air, and you're stuck with cold air permanently (Ouch for Winter). They are around £40-00 each, and will keep blowing until the heater motor is replaced. I wouldn't like to think what they cost for a VW. You can only get thermal resistors from VW directly, nowhere else, again possibly breakers.

I, too, lost my (only) key for my Toyota Ago last week.
(The car was bought from a Toyota Dealer, only given one key on handover, and have been writing them for 2.5 yrs. without success, to get an extra key :-( !).
Local Toyota Dealer is quoting £1200 to replace ECU, & Locks. Why do Toyota Dealers not order New (Factory) key, on production of V5C, if necessary, and as a matter of course ?. If I could get a Factory Key, a local auto locksmith would program it for £40 !. Read more

Just wanted some advice around buying a second hand car. I’ve been looking for a fabia vrs and found one offered by an official skoda dealership. I put a deposit down to hold the car subject to test-drive but then the day afterward I put the deposit down they called me back to inform me that the entire engine had been replaced about 8 months ago. Apparently it was all done under warranty and has been fine since but apparently they didnt have details of exactly why the engine had to be replaced. As its being bought from an offical skoda dealership it comes with a years further Skoda warranty if I go ahead and buy it. My thoughts were that this should be a good thing having a new engine and all but just wondered if there is any other questions I should be asking/things I should be specifically looking out for when I test drive it? The twincharger engine has had major cam chain or piston/oil jet problems in the past, the latter resulting in horrendous oil consumtion. However this does seem to have been resolved and later engines are sorted . Infact the best 1.4 vrs Fabia IS one with a new engine.

Look out for evidence of oil on the back of the car - any evidence whatsoever simply walk away!

Having now seen the new pictures of the latest 5 series, I have no doubt it will be an excellent car. I recently swapped my F10 for a new Outback and was delighted with the comfort and quality of the F10.
My niggle is that BMW have now adopted the same approach to car design as Audi and MB. Design one model and then put the drawings in the photocopier and scale up or down to create the next new model.
Is ere anyone that spends time differentiating their models now days ?

I think Zephyr/Zodiac bodies were about 6" longer, wheelbase was 3" longer too to accommodate the longer 6 cylinder engines. (I had examples of both models, many miles cruising along with the girlfriend beside me on the bench seat!)

I would be grateful for some advice that I think I know the answer to but also know how educated many of you are on here.
My Outback states that 0w20 oil is needed for servicing.
I intend to use Mobil 1 esp which I consider to be the best.
The questions I have are, can I use a thicker oil such 5w30 and if I do will it offer better protection and is the 0w20 just for better mileage ?
Also does anybody disagree on the choice of Mobil 1 and would they recommend anything different e.g. Shell Helix Ultra ?

Clearance for a road engine would be 0.0015" to 0.0025".

So 38 to 63 microns then!...

So my battery ran flat after my wife left the charger on, not the first time it's ahppened and I usually pop the battery out, give it a quick charge and all is well until she does it again.

However this time I did it in the dark and connected the battery the wrong way around - there were sparks, the indicators flicked on briefly and the car horn sounded.

I took the battery out, charged it for another 20 mins (until the charger said fully charged) then reconnected properly.

The car starts fine but the battery light on the dash and the engine light are on.... Read more

Luckily for you, electronic modules in most cars are reverse polarity protected. Your alternator might have had a heart attack though....

Buying a Ford 3 years ago, offered Diamondbrite, for about same money. Unless you are there in person when its done you dont know how its applied and how well. So I refused, bought the same stuff on internet, and made sure I did it to my satisfaction and saved myself over £300.
So no. Dont bother. Its only the sales person trying to make more comission on the sale.
And as has been said, there are plenty of products for a lot less that you can apply yourself. Or just get a good valeter out once a year to do the same for a hell of a lot less.
