I have just been told I need a new engine for our Renault Master Ambulance Campervan.

As it's a 1997 model, I've been told a reconditioned or rebuild of my engine is going to be easier & quicker than finding a 2nd hand engine somewhere.... Read more

I have used www.ivorsearle.co.uk/ they supplied an exchange engine to me a few years ago. They seem a very professional outfit. They do a lot of the machining in house. Proper "remanufacturing" as opposed to "bolt some good bits together"

Yes - I would go with searles - I went to their factory years ago and as an apprentice trained machinist take it from me they know what they are doing.

On taking my 2006 Honda CR-V to the main dealer following a recall they informed me that the rear differential is seized and to un-seize it will require the differential to be heated up in order to free it. They also advise it will cost in the region of £400 to do this. Is this a common fault in CR-V's? What does heating it up entail? And is £400 reasonable for this? Read more

AFAIK, the rear diff is engaged electronically. The oil should be changed regularly - every 30k or if the diff starts to squeal when turning tight corners. Apparently, it's not as easy a job as it sounds..... apparently! (According to a Honda loving mechanic)

Having spent time researching these before buying, I believe the dual pump system is entirely mechanical. It's just two propellors that engage the rear diff clutches when a difference between front and rear wheel speeds causes them to engage....

Hi learned ones. I've just replaced the steel wheels/tyres on my car. The fitters I used pointed out some very rusty wheel bolts some of which were very difficult to remove and others were "fragile". They suggested that I get some new ones and then get the bolt holes cleaned out by tap and die (apologies if wrong terminology). I now have the new bolts (original equipment). Before I fit them is it worth following the recommendation? I guess my concern is that will not improve things and may make them worse by further damaging the hole and threads. In particular, if the process slightly increases the size of the hole the new bolts will be loose.

It may be possible to find out the thread diameter and pitch from this website by entering you car details - it would appear they also sell wheel nuts and bolts.

A traffic light would be safer. Many drivers of all ages just drive straight over mini roundabouts anyway. PLUS-with mini roundabouts attached to a big roundabout( eg Hemel Hempstead's magic roundabout) you can go round either(both) ways. Car crash.

I live close to a complicated junction which has an entrance to a supermarket far to close to the slip road for a major bypass. Had it been designed now it probably wouldn't have been permitted.

It results in lots of confusion as you try and exit the supermarket to turn right onto the road. Cars approaching from the left, often at speed, indicate right and move over to take the slip, but are actually entering the supermarket, result was lots of minor accidents, road closures etc....

In the last few weeks, I've been a passenger with several drivers - male and female - in their 20s and 30s.

Without exception, they drive either on the accelerator, or on the brake. There's been no gradual slowing, or easing off on the approach to a bend. It's on the accelerator, then on the brake as they get close, then straight onto the accelerator out of the bend - even if another slow bend is 50 yards ahead, and they'll be braking in 2 or 3 seconds again.... Hello RT. It is simply thoughtlessness. They seem to want to get there before they set off. This behaviour usually goes with tailgateing, speeding and a general lack of awareness of the prevailing conditions, surroundings and situation. It does seem more pronounced in the younger driver, I agree. I don't suppose for a minute they would be interested in a refresher course. I wager they think they are very good drivers. Unfortunately it sometimes takes a near miss or collision or worse, for them to realise there is a much better way of approaching driving. The exuberance of youth!

Where headlights are higher off the ground than a normal saloon car, do the headlight beams have to be angled more acutely so that they hit the road the same distance away as a saloon car?

I ask this because if not, then I'm not suprised that I'm always blinded by 4x4 headlights. And if not, the law should be changed. Read more

Premium "bling" cars seem to have the most dazzling oncoming lights - but thet's probably due more to their drivers' incompetence than the vehicle design - as it happens for SUVs, cars, and low-slung sports cars....

We are swapping out the OEM Blaupunk Cassette Radio and replaing it with a more modern music streaming, Bluetooth device. Cannot get power to the machine directly and have had to take power off the fusebox somewhere. But reading various threads on other fora it seems more complicated than that.

Does anyone have any definitive advice about this swap out? We have bought an aerial adaptor and an ISO adapater (not certain if we have the right one though despite Halfords protestations...) but I was hoping for something more plug and play...... Read more
