Fords have just conducted MOT and full service on my car with no major problems.

However in the Advisory part of their report they state that the Alternator Belt may need looking at later in the year. May 2016 to be procise.... Read more

Thanks for the advice. I thought it was odd. They have given the car a full service. Personally I think they are trying it on. Not unknown in my experience. It is a Ford Service dealer and they use all their own parts.

I have certainly not noticed anything untoward when driving the car, and their are no oil leaks....

my new kuga has stop start tech .wont this block the filters quickly on town driving? Read more

Agreed. A diesel should not be used for town driving. Its not just the DPF that suffers, the EGR valve will soon get gummed up too.

Some owners handbooks say this, I'm guessing the salesmen at the dealerships are not doing....

That is called running on .Caused by overheating. The spark plugs are acting like Glow plugs in a model glow engine and fring the engine which is knocking it's head off. Cause varies but usually weak mixture wrong plug grade or wrong timing. Check for air leaks in the induction circuit Correct plugs .Timing for both the valves and ignition Just for starters

Thanks everyone for your responses and advice. I'm currently having an estimate prepared for timing belt, idlers, tensioners, water pump with steel impeller and front suspension bushings. I think I could manage subsequent cambelt changes myself, the special tools and camlocks are not too expensive when you consider the labour savings from a specialist.

Unfortunately, I can't buy one for peanuts, I know they're inexpensive in Britain but I'm now in Canada and they're a sought after import. ...

Hi

I have recently purchased a new Disco Sport with the new ingenium engine and I have been shocked at how poor the fuel economy is. I really Like the car but am avereaging only 34.2 miles to the gallon and the best I can get is 39 to 40 to the Gallon if I drive very, very sedately. Compared to the published data this is apalling. I am just wondering if anybody would like to share their experience with me as I am beginin to wonder if their is something wrong with my vehicle. Whilst I never expected to achieve the published figures I am so far of them I need to do a sanity check. Read more

So I'm watching a few nearly-new's on AT ahead of picking up something in the coming weeks... One in particular had caught my eye as a "possible".

Yesterday, I noticed that a second ad had suddenly appeared for a dealer 40 miles away with no apparent connection to the first (apart from both having a "used approved" Mazda affiliation) at the same price. Today, the original ad has been changed so it is no longer apparent who the first dealer is - in fact it suggests that it was at a Subaru centre - with no mention of the dealer's name any more.... I have read and tried other suggestions, but my car alarm (factory installed) still sounds every time I try to fit battery. I have tried locking and unlocking manually, along with boot, installing key into the ingnition and turning. I have even tried getting in and out and repeating the locking unlocking routine.

Any advice? Read more

Thanks, I'll try that.

I've just bought some new light fittings for my k****** and the packaging states they are suitable for energy classes C and D bulbs only (they come with halogen bulbs which are rated as D).

We also bought some A+ rated LED bulbs (GU10 fitting) which I want to use when the light fittings are installed. The packaging of the new light fittings has all energy classes crossed out apart from C and D which rather suggests that it is not possible to install and use lower (or higher) classes of bulbs.... There a many books on physical fitness in general : does anyone know if there is anything available where advice is given on maintaining and improving fitness specifically related to driving.

Too many times I've seen drivers who would appear to phsically struggle with the demands of driving.... Read more

As a child in the 1950s in Farnham (Surrey/Hants border) I well remember a big Daimler Conquest being driven either by a large retired officer. Colonel Darnley-Anderson......or by nobody (in reality his 5'0" wife). In those days seats moved fore and aft, but not up and down. That should be avoidable nowadays with the great majority of cars having seat height adjustment.

But I don't think she ever had an accident.

pullgees

Just curious. I've heard that when are using the car's electrical appliances ie, lights wipers, heater blower etc this increases fuel consumption. Seeing as the alternator is constantly producing electrical enrgy by virtue of it being driven off the crankshaft pulley surely the extra demand for electrical power can only have a fractional effect on fuel consumption? I'm I right or wrong? Read more

Under this circumstance, the alternator will be able to provide more than enough power. the problem is the battery. As the temp drops below 5C the battery is progressively less able to accept charge untill about -2C when it will not accept any charge. It is therefore necessary for the battery to warm up a little as the car drives before it will accept charge. this is the main reson why batteries die after a series of short journeys in a cold spell.
