With a stop/start diesel

If you pull up to the lights and sit there for many minutes with the engine running you will be filling the DPF up with soot

If you pull up to the lights and sit there for many minutes where the engine has been shutdown via stop/start you will not be filling the DPF up with soot and modern injection systems are closely metered so you won't inject extra soot on re-start

If you just do town driving the DPF will eventually block

Agreed. A diesel should not be used for town driving. Its not just the DPF that suffers, the EGR valve will soon get gummed up too.

Some owners handbooks say this, I'm guessing the salesmen at the dealerships are not doing.

However, the problems usually occur when the warrranty and liability have long expired, and if you're one of those who changes cars every few years, probably won't notice or care, its the poor sucker next in line for the car.
