Hi,
My tyres were due for replacement, and due to a slight bit of disatisfaction with the OEM Dunlop SP Sport Maxx, I decided to look at different makes.... Read more
The vehicle needs new brake pads. The discs are clean and not scored. The main agent says that because the disc thickness' are 34mm front and 22mm rear that they should be replaced too. Do you agree - or is he trying it on ! Read more
A quick look in a brake disc catalogue shows new thicknesses at 36mm and 24mm resp. That means you have got 2mm wear on each. I'd say that puts them close to needing replacement, although I don't know what BMW specify as a minimum. It isn't likely to be much less though.
The Garage charged me for 4 coil packs fitted to my above car ?
Is the garage invoice right ? Thought it would only be one coil pack ?... Read more
If it uses pencil type coils then there will be one coil per spark plug.
Engine management light and warning buzzer come on when braking, even before brakes bite, and go off again when released.
All brake linings are ok, the brakes work fine and it had new fluid last November.... Read more
ThanK you. It's always great to have feed back, sadly very few do.
I have seen many garages falter over the most stupidest of faults.
Always best to think outside the box.
More than once have I seen automatic gearboxes replaced when a faulty bulb holder causes havoc with the gear changes or limp home mode.
Your OBD scanner won't be much good as it will only give you emission related codes
My Picasso has recently started to switch from main beam to dipped without being touched. The indicators also turn themselves off most of the time after a few flashes. The airbag light has come on briefly a few times. Any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks Read more
Thanks for the reply- I'll investigate that. Another thought: I've read quite a bit about the Comms 2000 module and its many faults. Could it be this?
Update: no fault codes were found, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new Comms unit. It was fairly easy to fit and so far everything seems to be working properly. There are many different variants though, so it's very important to obtain the right one....

Hi, want some advice have found July 2014 model on sale 14000 miles on clock. Trading in June 2003 petroll 1.6l petrol 118650 miles Price on car was £13995 have haggled that to £13600. Have been offered £750 if I trade Beetle in. Would plan to take bank loan for £7500 ( can get 3.3% apr with m&s bank repayments £218 X 36months and pay the rest with savings using a credit card to hand over some of deposit so I have the extra security that using a credit offers and paying off the card before I incur any credit card interest charges. The car is used for work not just commuting and I don't want to take the depreciation hit of buying new. My brother telling me I should buy new on PCP or hirer purchase. I would also plan to get AA or equivalent background check on car. Any advice appreciated Read more
Lots of cars pick up bumps and scrapes. It's no big deal.
But if you aren't sure, walk away, go for something else.

If you've no idea what you're doing, then a car auction is not the place for you. ...

If you specified the same type/variant of tyre for front and back, then you're entitled to ask them to take off those new tyres that they've fitted, and supply what they were originally supposed to do. It would be covered under the Consumer Rights Act.
However, I doubt it would make much (if any) noticeable difference. To me, as long as the tyres on an axle are identical, that's all that really matters.
