I've been reading many many reports on various forums regarding vibration on the Avensis. Some seem to say it happens on acceleration, some say on motorway driving, but all seem to imply it happens within certain rev bands. The advice given is usually wheels, discs, or drive shaft issues. But have these vibration victims ever started their cars, firmly engaged the handbrake, gear in neutral and revved the engine to near the upper rev limit? I have and guess what? The vibration is slightly felt around 2000 revs, gets noticeable at 3000 revs and slightly disappears at around 4500 revs. I must admit that the vibration seems worse when actually driving the car, but the vibration can be felt when stationary, thus must be engine related. I took my car to 2 private garages and a Toyota dealer. The private garages told me it was engine resonance and tightened every nut they could find, especially the engine mounts. Very, very slight improvement. They recommended replacing the engine mounts one by one till the culprit/culprits were found, but the cost of the mounts was somewhat excessive just to play about with so I took it to aToyota dealer. They told me that this problem is usually the inlet manifold and recommended replacing it - which they did. And guess what? Absolutely no difference. So I've got a nice new inlet manifold but the same old really annoying problem. Could it really be an/a few engine mounts? I've been told they are expensive because they are not just good old metal/rubber/metal mounts but oil-filled shock absorber type mounts! Seems the more complicated the vehicle.....I'll let you finish that sentence. Could it be the variable valve technology throwing the engine out of balance at certain revs? Could it be the flywheel going adrift? Why doesn't Toyota admit there is a problem? Why can't they solve it?

I'm not the only one with this problem and from the various forums it's a pretty common issue. Any thoughts on the matter would be really welcome. Read more

Thanks for reply. I can only think that if the problem does not turn out to be the mounts, the only other option would be something in the engine going awry. This would be way out of my skill base unless it's just a deft thump with a hammer in the appropriate location.

1.6 Zetec engine when fired up idles ok. But when I accelerate it 'stalls' & engine dies. Restart & all is ok. Happens about every 4 - 5th start up. Any ideas? Mike Read more

Give it a good dose of diesel conditioner, especially if your MoT test is due.

I have a 57' C Crosser (Diesel) with just under 75K miles and every winter poor starting-Glowplugs lights up 3-5second.Then turn the key but it always hesitates sometime needing a second key turn .New Battery Installed (bosch S5) and the usual electrical checks Alternator voltage etc via citreon all show nothing wrong..I had a issue a couple of years ago with Fuel filter etc.. In summer the car starts ina fraction of a second..So last winter (albeit a mild one in my area).I decided to try a heater under the battery and one on the oil sump. And hey presto it starts almost perfectly..So my question..does anyone else have similar issues and am I just Masking/hiding a deeper issue..I would be very greatful if anyone could help me answer is this normal or ?.I was thinking of getting a INLINE heater for the cooling system which i have seen on my travels to Sweden or russia and germany..But again anyone with direct experience please ormaybe glow plugs etc.. but all checked via citreon :( ..many thanks to any advice Barry Read more

Does your car have a DPF? If so the glow plugs are used a lot during regeneration, and their life can be shortened if you do lots of short trips and it has to regenerate more.

My driving licence expired on January this year, due to them making enquiries about my medical status.
I have contacted them twice since Christmas, and have been told by them, that as long as my doctor says that I am safe enough to drive, I can carry on doing so.

I queried this as I was convinced that you are not allowed to drive once your licence has expired, but was told forcefull by a member of staff at their office that I was legally allowed to carry on driving.

My daughter thinks that if I got behind the drivers seat, my insurance would be null and void because my licence is out of date.

I have again contacted the DVLA by email stating this, but they have not replied.

I am sure that if I get stopped by the police, I will be fined anderhaps banned.

Can anyone give me some advise about this, before I contact the insurance company and the police to get some advise.

As far as I know, if the licence was recinded by DVLA, you need to re-apply and can only drive when you get the new licence.

But if you surrendered it, as soon as you believe you are ok again, you can drive as soon as the re-application form is posted....

hi i have a renault kangoo 1.4 x reg petrol, the rad fan has stopped kicking in, ive put a power supply direct to the fan and it runs so i replaced the thermostat and coolant temp switch but the fan still isnt kicking in, ive checked all fuses and all looks ok. Im thinking its possibly a relay which leads me to the question, if this model has a relay for the radiator fan where is it as ive looked online and through the hand book with no success??

any advice or suggestions will be much appreciated Read more

I think you will find a relay and fuse in the electric box located under a black plastic cover between the battery and left headlight.
