Purchased this new A3 in September 2011 from Audi dealer. It has done 34,000 miles and fully Audi serviced. Just developed a noise in the last couple of days and had a mechanic friend have a look at it. He advised it was either a bearing in gearbox or differential bearing problem.

Warranty expired September 2014.... Read more

Thank you for your response. My mechanic friend may have got it wrong!

Took it in to Audi dealer (who I purchased vehicle from) who has diagnosed problem as wheel bearing on passenger front and the other bearing is also on its way out (driver side). Did the screwdriver test and said wasnt the gearbox... As the car is just out of warranty (six months) and the car is low mileage (34.500) and fully serviced can I push for audi uk to pay for one foc, the other goodwill gesture slight discount offered for the one, think might be best to get both done...? Advice much appreciated please

But do try a 1.7 Vauxhall diesel before you buy: last time I drove one (a few years ago now so they may have improved) it was a gutless bag of nails.

Oh no, didn't realise the 1.7d was being considered, agree with Avant, test drive one properly on the route of your choosing, not the easy route the sales crew have carefully chosen.

Gutless, absolutely nothing going on till the turbo gets up to full boost and then it's nowt to write home about, i couldn't have one the lack of low speed torque would drive me up the wall.

Hi everybody, I have recently bought a X5, which has LPG fitted, She runs really well. Got one thing that is niggling me though, I have heard that it is best to use an oil additive, as gas can cause premature valve wear. Can anyone advise me on this and if so, what oil additive should I use? Many thanks in reading this,

What you are after is called Flashlube (several alternatives available now, i've just looked), you can buy the flashlube oil from the usual online sources for around £60 for 5 litres IIRC, average mileage 5 litres should last you over 2 years.

The oil is dispensed directly into the air intake via small pipes just upstream of the gas injectors, you buy a Flashlube kit which comprises of a mounting kit plus bottle with adjustable flow screw and (probably best to get an LPG specialist to do this) drill into the air intake and pipe it up....

May be worth trying a battery disconnect procedure to see if that resumes the system. There are 2 batteries on these, one in the engine bay (starter battery) and the auxiliary battery in the boot.

How do I check the ECU Fault Codes ?

I am having intermittent starting problem over last 3 days with Engine Control Indicator (lightning symbol) on instrument panel flashing at times.

Car starts for while, then won't start for a while, then starts, over an hour period of testing.

I read in the past somewhere, you can check ECU fault Codes on a plug by shorting 2 pins.... Read more

I have been clearing out some drawers in the garage and found I had a grand total 0f 39 tappet shims, dating from the time when I had a Mark 1 diesel Golf and a 1983 Passat. The system was that you measured the valve clearance, then if it was incorrect you removed the shim, did a simple calculation and then replaced the old shim with another that was a different thickness. Originally, you could go to the local VW garage where the service department would swap shims for free - however they stopped doing that because, they said, they ended up with a lot of shims that were the wrong size.

Thus I had to buy the things - German & Swedish used to sell them. Quite how I managed to collect 39 I am not sure - though I did knock up a big mileage in the Golf, which meant a lot of tappet setting.... Read more

I would be finding an outfit that specialises in repairing and servicing classic (but not too classic) VWs and inviting offers. Someone somewhere will be crying out for them and will snatch your hand off.

Some people choose to drive powerful cars with big engines that pay a lot of tax, while other people drive older, poorly maintained cars that use a lot more fuel than they would in good condition, and so end up paying extra fuel duty.

So I don't think that tax bands are a huge influence on the choice of car....
