A3, SE138tdi, 1986c - Bearing in Gearbox or differential bearing problem - April

Purchased this new A3 in September 2011 from Audi dealer. It has done 34,000 miles and fully Audi serviced. Just developed a noise in the last couple of days and had a mechanic friend have a look at it. He advised it was either a bearing in gearbox or differential bearing problem.

Warranty expired September 2014.

Anyone had experience of the above please? I will have to take it to dealer next week (not being driven at the moment as appears to be getting worse).

Thank you

I suspect when Audi have diagnosed and then rejected your goodwill request, the best course of action would be to search out (probably via Audi forums) a good and hopefully fairly local Audi specialists indy, who would probably be a good bet for future servicing too.

The problem will come when they want to strip the box down to diagnose the problem, you might find the maker unwilling to comment on your goodwill claim until it's stripped out, between a rock and hard place there.

Hopefully they'll do the right thing, let us know please.

A3, SE138tdi, 1986c - Bearing in Gearbox or differential bearing problem Now WHEEL BEARING PROBLEM! - April

Thank you for your response. My mechanic friend may have got it wrong!

Took it in to Audi dealer (who I purchased vehicle from) who has diagnosed problem as wheel bearing on passenger front and the other bearing is also on its way out (driver side). Did the screwdriver test and said wasnt the gearbox... As the car is just out of warranty (six months) and the car is low mileage (34.500) and fully serviced can I push for audi uk to pay for one foc, the other goodwill gesture slight discount offered for the one, think might be best to get both done...? Advice much appreciated please
