I have a 2000 Golf 2.0 8v. If I do lots of city driving or short journeys, the petrol consumption drops from 35 to 25mpg or worse - the engine also starts surging / running rough and there is a smell of fuel from the exhaust. The only way I have managed to clear this in the past is to drive quickly on a downhill stretch of motorway, then take my foot off the throttle and let the engine overrun for as long as possible - say 75mph down to 60mph. I usually have to do this several times over a number of trips before it clears. Read more
Hello everyone,
Please can someone tell me if I can swap my ECU for a new one without any problems?... Read more
Normally an ECU is car specific holding the car keycode and its unique alarm system code they can be replaced but need to be coded in.One of the specialist contibuters will be along shortly and give you the exact procedure.
I have a 306 estate with a bosch wiper motor that has now been replaced twice, It needs doing again becasue its wiping really slowly and sounds very rough. However, it will only wipe if I wiggle the blue relay. Does this mean the wiring is dodgey as well as the motor or could it be the relay.
I dont want to waste time replacing the motor if its not goin to work anyway. I have tried securing the relay so it doesnt move but as soon as the boot is closed (probably cos its so heavy) im back to square one... Read more
Open up the relay and see if it is full of water.I,m sure it could be by-passed.You would need to find the supply from switch when turned on and connect to the motor wire that makes it sweep. You will probably lose the park function.hth
Anyone remember how the lever inside the car controls the heater. i have tried pulling it in and out but doesn't seem to make any difference to the heater. It always blows cold. Not sure if pulling lever out or in puts heater on, any one remember or have one that works. I have flushed through cooling system and no air locks etc. Read more
Thank you Vitesse6. The cable is in good order and is moving the valve on the heater box.
I will look out for a new valve
I had an alternator changed last week. Two days later I received a "STOP" coolant warning so I got my car recovered to the garage. The coolant was completely empty and we found that the coolant hose at the bottom of the engine was disconnected, not sure for how long. Garage filled the coolant up and run a carbon mono-oxide test on the coolant tank. The result was that the liquid in the apparatus turned green, which apparently, was indicative of the presence of carbon in the coolant, in other words a head gasket failure. There’s no oil present in the coolant pot and even though the coolant level has dropped by about 30% in 24hours, there are no other visible signs and the engine runs very smoothly. I spoke to two different garages and they both express doubt that it is a case of HGF. Now waiting to have it booked in for second opinion.... Read more
Excessive noise from rear wheels when braking. Car has <7,000 miles on it and has made the noise since new. Since the noise only occurs when braking it's presumably unlikely to be a differential problem. Right? Also, the Honda dealer has looked at the discs amd pads and reckons they're O.K. Any ideas anybody? Read more
Lack of use = rust which wears off with a lot of noise. Gone when you get to garage hence not found.

The is fitted with easy start.
When I depress the brake pedal it is solid and the green light on the button fails to light. the car will not start. After several tries the car starts.... Read more

Does anyone know where I stand with regards to some work I have done on someones car. The story is: I have done about £3000 worth of work on a car about 16 months ago and the person couldn't pay. He has since vanished off the face of the earth, email doesn't work, contact address and address on log book is a 'citybox' address which is now returning mail back to sender, debt collector has done a credit search and he doesn't have any credit so not traceable.
I still have his car and its not worth what the work bill comes to anymore so I wold like to apply for the logbook and sell it to try and get some money back. The question is, legally can I do it if I have tried every way of contacting the owner and he has vanished?... Read more
My new website www.dealerclub.co.uk deals with legal problems like this for people in the motor trade - amongst other benefits.
Your T&Cs should have been drawn up so you held a lien on the parts you fitted and the work you had undertaken - if they do not the court will probably support you in this regard in any event - but make sure your T&Cs are updated to do this in future. We can supply you with a set to suit your circumstances if you wish....
That message simply means an error code relating to the transmission has been logged - it could be one of about 50 things. You need to examine the code which is stored to take it further.
It could be anything ranging from a sensor fault, control unit fault or and internal problem with the gearbox. If it is the latter and you've taken it to a Volvo garage they will say replace the gearbox as their policy is not to repair them.
