Just bought the wife an 02 plate Xsara HDi, and it has a radio cassette in, and I intend to change it for an oem cd player.
Neighbour, who has a similar car, says it won't need coding as the later ones didn't need it, but I think otherwise.
Any ideas? Read more

Can any current or previous owners of the Mk7 Honda Civic (2000-2005 hatchback) comment on the quality of the in-car entertainment? Are the Honda CD unit and speakers any good?
Also, for those with the factory-fitted Sat Nav / DVD, is this up to much? Read more
I am after buying a second hand car soon, namely a 2005(ish) Honda Civic Type S - although I haven't found one yet.
Am I likely to either get more for my money, or have more choice in cars, by waiting for the new registration mark in September? Just wondering if dealers wil lower prices of older cars, or will have new motors in that have been part-exchanged for a brand new model?... Read more
I don't think it'll make that much difference given that you're looking at a car about 5 years old. My wife had a Type S and it was a good car: plenty of performance from a 2.0 litre engine in a car designed for a 1.4 or 1.6, and particularly good legroom in the back. The only downside I can remember was that because it had fatter tyres than the basic model, the turning circle was very poor.
Re your other thread - the audio system was perfectly OK: I can't remember anything particularly good or bad about it....
Can anyone help me.
When I click the fob to open unlock the central locking on the car, it has started to unlock but then lock again.... Read more
A few weeks ago I was coming to the car in the morning and finding it dead, enough power to deactivate the alarm but only the drivers door would unlock using the key. I would put it on charge and it would be alright for a few days, when it would happen again. It started to happen increasingly often and, when it happened the morning after I had put the battery on charge, I assumed that the battery (the original one) was faulty.
So I had a new battery fitted about 2 weeks ago and all seemed well, until this morning. This morning the whole car was dead, alarm still active and LED flashing it's normal rhythym, the alarm would not deactivate from either fob. So I opened the driver's door, popped the bonnet and searched around in vain for somewhere to use the key under the bonnet to deactivate the alarm while it wailed away. What was odd this morning was that when I put the battery charger on it would not start charging (it's a Halfords one which doesn't provide power to the clips until it detects a circuit has been made). This was only a few hours after I had successfully opened and then locked the car using the fob.
Assuming the new battery is not defective, then it seems logical that there is an electrical fault somewhere. It's odd that the length of time between charging the battery and finding it dead seems to vary, sometime it's a week sometimes the next day. Could something in the electrical system be causing a problem seemingly at random in this way? Could an earthing problem cause something like this, I am fairly weak on electrics?
Anyone had a similar experience?
Thanks... Read more
Sounds like you have found the problem, the main earth lead is probably bolted to the engine.
Hi, can anyone confirm if the ecotec 1.8 engine fitted to the 2004/54 Vectra Energy is belt or chain driven. In the process of purchaing and cannot find confirmation. Read more

I`ve been aware of people surrounding me, in public, for many decades now - the work just made you like that and the tendency was strengthened by travelling in South East Asia.
It`s intrusive at first, but then becomes second nature as you scan the pavement in front for familiar faces, and certain characteristics - the awareness of what`s behind you and the right angle turn as an unknown potential threat closes in on you from behind.... Read more

You have a major problem with your engine and you are bothered about a light.

Not really being familier with the petrol engines in 405s I can only give you a rough idea. The diesels have adjustable valves but they are set by using diffefent thickness shims which entails removing the camshaft, if the petrol engine is overhead cam, which I suspect it is, the same procedure will apply
I have just looked up the Xantia engines which I suspect are the same and they are overhead cam, designated XU engines, the diesel is XUD so I'm pretty sure its the same, so valve clearance adjustment will require a certain ammount of dismantling....
