Peugeot 405 Petrol - noisy valve - lakedaimon

HeLLo my friends. its been a while since my last post, hope everyone is fine in this forum :-)

I have a question about my cars valves, being completly ignorant about how they work i would really appreciate some feedback before i pay the mechanic a visit so that i know what to epxect and how much work fine tuning the valves for my car involves.

2 years ago i had to change my car engines due to my ex - mechanic fault, but the new (second hand) one has one valve making a tik tik noise. The car is very old but i love it and i dont want to leave it like that if it dont take a huge amount to fix it.

Here some people tell me its very easy, u only need to fine tune the valves. Then, Some other people tell me that peugeot 405 has auto tuning valves which does not require fine tuning and probably need to be replaced and that in this case i will have to replace all 4 of them. (that, i can not afford by the way :-) Also there is another theory, that somene told me i only need to take them to be polished (cleaned) and then it will be fine again.

So it would really really be a great help if u could tell me your opinion about it. REally looking forward for your reply. Have a nice day!

Not really being familier with the petrol engines in 405s I can only give you a rough idea. The diesels have adjustable valves but they are set by using diffefent thickness shims which entails removing the camshaft, if the petrol engine is overhead cam, which I suspect it is, the same procedure will apply

I have just looked up the Xantia engines which I suspect are the same and they are overhead cam, designated XU engines, the diesel is XUD so I'm pretty sure its the same, so valve clearance adjustment will require a certain ammount of dismantling.

Its unusual for valves on these engines to rattle as the clearances tend to close up with use rather than open, are you sure it is valves? If the noise is not to bad I would just go on using it and not worry.

Their are eight or sixteen valves incidentally, probably eight in your engine.
