As in I thought that the 2.0 was a replacment for the 1.9 lump.
I am aware that in Italy? there is/was a tax advantage somewhere about the 1.9 or sub 2.0 litre point, but even the 2.0 is only 1986cc or whatever.... Read more
A few months ago I wrote a post about the launch of a car donation service called www.Giveacar.co.uk. You can find the story here. The premise of the service is that we take away any car, whether roadworthy or not, and either sell it or scrap it – donating the proceeds of the cars sale/scrap metal value to charity.
I thought I’d tell you how it’s going so far because at the time quite a few people commented on the story. In three months we’ve gone up to around 10-15 cars per week, and the service has raised almost £10,000 for various charities. Thank you for all your initial comments, I took them all on board and have tried to address them. Now the service is becoming ever more successful and I think we are not far off doing many more cars. It will be interesting to see how much the closure of the scrappage scheme affects our demand. I’m hoping that the new swappage scheme does not become too prominent. ... Read more
As at least some of the money is going to charity I'll let this stand.
help - got carnew in jul 2008 -all fine until 2 months ago - started with very occasional squeal like noise from rear of car - however since then has worsened dramatically - still intermiten but when there very loud and sounds like metal on metal - sometimes goes away with braking , sometimes dissapears when driving - when there it is unbearable - had brakes checked and cleaned last week and all ok - took car into toyota today for accelorator repair and asked them to check out noise - told me was not the brakes/pads - only way to get rid of this would be to maybe !!! replace discs etc at a cost of 275 quid - and that this of course was not covered under warranty - i asked her if discs were definitely causing problem and she could not answer me - but she agreed that with only 16500 miles on clock seems low mileage to be having to replace these ( if problem at all )
im really worried as it is a lot of money to pay out without knowing if this is problem - am a student nurse and widowed and money tight - to think i traded in my jag for this car tosave money - she gave me cust servs tel no but wanted some back up info before i write to them - can anyone help - whats the normal changeover time of these discs - bearings - could they have been faulty from the start. any help/info gratefully required Read more
Did you get to the bottom of the noise? I have been experiencing the same thing with my Auris for the last 4 weeks. I hear it at higher speeds, but is intermittment, lasts about 10-20 seconds and happens every 10-20 seconds as well, it's got more frequent since it started. The dealer says it's the rear brakes sticking and something to do with the front right brake carrier.
i've fitted a new auto-adjust clutch cable to our old Golf. even when the pedal is fully up the clutch won't engage at all. the problem is that the difference between the lengths of the inner and outer cables isn't enough.
is it possible to re-compress the auto-adjuster? i've tried grasping both ends and pushing them together (as suggested in haynes manual!) but to no effect. ... Read more
Just to round this off - I bought a manual-adjust cable from GSF (German Swedish French) car spares online. It arrive the next day, I fitted it in 30 minutes and the clutch mechanism now works perfectly!
a friend of mine has a Ford Fiesta. he recently had the discs exchanged as his car was juddering when coming to a halt.
Despite this, the car still judders when braking. what might be causing this?... Read more

i spoke to the workshop.
Daughter's boyfriend had his rear wiper arm ripped off. i've had a go at removing what's left, but because it's fitted through glass i'm reluctant to apply too much force or impact load.

i had a similar problem myself a few weeks ago with a Meriva. a steady few minutes with a small hacksaw down the side of the retaining nut soon resolved the problem. if i'd thought about it properly i'd have taped the ends of the blades in cloth before i began just to make sure that i didn't catch the paintwork.
it was very easy although a little worrying!
hi all,

a relative of mine mistakenly took his daughter's car to get it cleaned without realising that he was only a named driver on his wife's insurance for their car. it never occured to him that he was not insured. He got stopped for not wearing a seat belt and the insurance issue became evident when he took his documents to the police station. He will now be prosecuted for having no insurance and for not wearing a seat belt. He currently has three points for a speeding offence. other than that he has had no driving offences in over 40 years. He never drives his daughter's car and this was a one off. He just made a mistake thinking he was insured when he wasn't. The whole scenario may now have the potential for his points tally to reach driving ban level. What advice would you give him on how to proceed? Should he contact a solicitor, appear in court or submit a written plea of mitigation or what? Read more
Dear Lucy..
Its not a myth Im afraid !!...
My 2006 Golf GT tdi 140 (33k) flashed up the ESP light over Xmas, handy with all the snow! and now the coil starter warning light has come on, I read with abject horror all the other blogs about these units failing and await the call from Chiswick VW with trepidation.
They were polite yesterday but with a potential bill this big I'll be talking to customer services as this is just out of warranty & has a full VW service history. I have had 5 Golfs and this has been the worst , am certainly not buying another one. As the finance deal is ending I'm counting the days to handing it back- VW get a grip or you'll be losing your hard earned reputation for reliability & build quality!
If anyone can advise me further please do.
Thanks Read more
hi Peter thanks for your reply the engine is non turbo and the belt was replaced last year. it was serviced last week including air, fuel and oil filter and its been running fine oil level has been checked regualy and remained constant. what is the TDc sensor and where would it be located ? and how can i check the pump timing. once again thanks for your reply.
I agree with DP. The 130bhp 1.9 diesel is a gem. I don't know what I will do when mine finally needs replacing, got one of the last ones around. Might go back to Ford, although as the 140 cracks on they are hopefully ironing out the faults. My daughter has an 08 140 Passat with 60K hard miles and no trouble, but she is fireproof with a company car. The jury is still out on this one. Concrete
