VW Golf Mk 3 1.4CL - clutch cable auto-adjuster problem. - Sofa Spud

i've fitted a new auto-adjust clutch cable to our old Golf. even when the pedal is fully up the clutch won't engage at all. the problem is that the difference between the lengths of the inner and outer cables isn't enough.

is it possible to re-compress the auto-adjuster? i've tried grasping both ends and pushing them together (as suggested in haynes manual!) but to no effect.

or is it better to write off this new cable and buy a manually adjustable one?

Don't know this particular cable but if a manual adjust version is available i would fit that, the less to go wrong the better.

i'm thinking of buying the manual adjust cable, but i've just spent nearly £40 on the auto-adjust one. i don't think i can get a refund as i fitted it and released the retaining straps that kept the adjuster compressed, so the cable is probably of no further use.

Just to round this off - I bought a manual-adjust cable from GSF (German Swedish French) car spares online. It arrive the next day, I fitted it in 30 minutes and the clutch mechanism now works perfectly!
