The car was first registered Sept 08 and has run brilliantly until January 2010. It has been a nightmare, feeling as though a wheel is buckled or terribly out of balance. However, the feel changes with each trip, but always feels like a wheel tyre problem. I have had the wheels and tyres checked and it does not appear to be the problem. I have spun the wheels round on a jack and not much brake binding or disk distortion. My wife nor my garage can discern my problem!!!

In desperation I changed from filling up with diesel at my local Supermarket to a BP station, putting 2/3 tank of regular diesel to fill up. Almost immediately the car is running smoother, not quite as well as 3 months ago, but is this because I still had 1/3 of a tank of previous fuel. Will continue to run out the old fuel and top up with the BP and see what transpires.... Read more

Wheel balance problems that keep changing charactaristics are usually due to both wheels being out of balance as the errors go in and out of phase depending on the relative positions of each wheel. I can't see how changing fuel can have any relavance to that fault, in fact in over thirty years of driving diesels I have never noticed any difference between fuels - I think its probably more to do with your blood sugar level at the time

You just think it`s all gone - but you notice that ever so slight - lighter colour of the Motorway road surface. A trick of the light, perhaps?

Days and sometimes two or three weeks pass - birds lay eggs and there is the dawn chorus of Spring. Thoughts turn to Summer and lolling about in the warmth while the motor shimmers with a heat haze.... Read more

Salt is soluble in water, so it only takes a few rain showers to remove it. What you're seeing is probably the grit that's mixed in with the salt to improve grip and reduce caking.

The idea being that as you start to reach a certain age (and notice that you are circling a sort of internally held, virtual conceptualization of a plug- hole) - that you have at this point, found peace with earlier life and so equipped, are less bothered about going down it...

Maybe you can`t feel the pull yet? So that`s fine - you only have to stick it out for a few more decades and you might find yourself surrounded by motors of light and air - with wispy looks - like Sophia Loren and not a Nile catfish with that ugly gaping mouth and tiny portals of eyes AKA the rear windows of any contemporary `in` motor.... At least we don't see as much badge engineering as we used to - although there are exceptions like the Toyota Aygo / Peugeot 107 / Citroen C1. It has been replaced by 'platform sharing' where the different brands at least have different styling.

It would be relatively easy to confirm or eliminate the starter or solenoid with a multimeter. When the problem occurs, connect the positive probe of a multimeter to the smaller of the two wires on the starter, and the negative to a good earth, or the battery negative terminal. Have an assistant turn the key. If there's 12v (or thereabouts) present as the key is turned to the start position, then the problem lies with the starter or solenoid. If there's no voltage present, there's a fault with the wiring, switch, or immobiliser. Given the fact the vehicle will bump start, I suspect the immobiliser is OK.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted....

I've posted under discussion about this, but wonder whether technical minds might have a more informed answer.

I'm about to trade in a troublesome Mondeo TDCi 130 which isn't wearing its age well, and have looked at an 05 Volvo V50 1.8S with under 50k miles, and an 03 Honda Accord 2.2 CTDi with nearly 90k miles, both under £6k.... Read more

Well, I guess we know some of the negatives - carbon black being better and so on. But just thinking about them brings a mental image of spats and Chicago gangsters - oh and perhaps a 60`s Triump Herald, or similar?

Why not though?... Read more

Time`s effect on memory has distorted the sequencing - but there were curlews in great flocks, passing over with that familier call. Familiar in memory that is, because that seems only where they reside around here.

Rememder sky larks? That sounds like larking about in a airliner perhaps - but they were birds in the 1950`s of course. Then there were hares laying in shallow depressions in the grass and even a local rabbit warren in a clump of gorse, that probably dated back a few hundred years, given it`s proximity to an aged farm....
