Driving through Glasgow this morning, we had quite a heavy frost last night, down to minus 4.

Driving along at 7.30am I was amazed to see that in one area, the footpaths had all been freshly gritted over the top of the frost.

I think we have now gone the full circle here, why are we sending out workment at 6-7 am in the morning to grit footpaths due to there being some frost? There are no forecasts for snow, in fact it is quite sunny just now.

So following this to its logical conclusion, come summer, as soon as we have nice weather, will the council be blasting all pedestrians with suncream?

AFAIK, the treads in tyre are to displace water to prevent aquaplaning.

How would a normal summer tyre behave on snow?

Will a tyre with deeper tread (say 8 mm) will perform better than same tyre with say 4 mm tread?

Company car drivers usually have to wait until 2mm before being allowed to change.

This is one of the 'downsides' of leased company cars, always irritates me but it's a facet of their business model (cf long life servicing), you always have the choice to pay your own money (although a bit extreme) of course.

Personally I'd like the option to pay a few more £ pcm to change at 3mm as I do on my own cars but I guess I'm an exception to the norm in this respect - I recall a poster a few months back that wanted to put remoulds on their leased car so I suspect that most car leasers (?) company or otherwise do not give tyres much thought.

Hi,
Yesterday I replaced the battery on our Pug. It was the original so no complaints there. As a matter of course i put jump leads from another car onto the leads and replaced the battery without problems. The car has a standard Clarion CD player and I'm unsure if it is a coded system like most in car units. I've looked through the literature I have but can't find a book relating to the CD/ radio - nor can I find any reference to a radio code.
Is this unit coded or not? I'm just being cautious for the future - if it is coded, then I'll need to get the code.

Thanks

There is a four digit security code on my 98 2.1 exec

Switch on radio display will read Code
Press the pre-select button 1 display will read 0---
Press the left or right arrow key until the first digit of code
diplayed, ie 7 display will read 7---
confirm this digit by pressing the pre-select
button 1 and display will read 70--
repeat for the the three next digits.

If the correct code has been entered a high pitched bleep will be heard and system becomes operational. If not error code shows and you must wait 1 minute, this time is doubled each time an error code shows.

I would like to change my tyres to winter tyres but have not got the room or the money to have a seperate set of rims so would using winter tyres in the summer pose any problems. I gather they maybe alittle louder. Looking at Dunlop supergrip 7+ Read more

I seem to recall Nokian WR is regarded as suitable for all year use, wouldn't do it meself they're too expensive to subject them to fast wear rates in hot weather, seems a waste...agree with Vred Quatrac 2 or 3 suggestion, they are designed for all year use.

Hello

Before I sign off for today, well from posting that is but will read, i will share this with all here.

Got a text from my cousin who is a Mercedes fanatic.

As some will be aware, most Mercedes are rear wheel drive cars. However, the Mercedes 'A' class is front wheel drive as it's not a real Mercedes. (Just joking)

I will never forget the way the 306 offered such fantastic handling with a lovely supple ride. Even the XSi and GTI-6 would soak up potholes and sunken manhole covers without any crashing, yet the body control at speed or when flinging the car through a series of tight corners was little short of flawless. The steering was perfectly geared and weighted, and the turn-in pin sharp. You could even play with the attitude of the car mid-bend using the throttle, and make the tail break away completely if you were in the mood.

I find it amusing that so many modern equivalents, particularly those from German manufacturers handle tidily, but ride like skateboards. A friend has a new Audi A5, and it handles well, but the ride is just appalling. You can feel every grain of tarmac, and the road noise is abysmal. The damping finesse and polish of those old Pug chassis put everything since to shame IMHO. The Focus was indeed good, but somehow just that bit less agile, with a coarser ride, and with the feeling of a little more "rubber" in between you and the mechanical bits. It also didn't offer the throttle adjustability or sure fired knowing that the damn thing would just turn into a corner, even if you were overcooking it a bit. The 306 always would.

I miss my XSi. Nowhere near the quickest car I've ever had, but so much fun. Even after three years, I'd still take it out just for a blast, and come back grinning

I need to replace the Michelin Primacy's on my C4 Grand Picasso. A quick look around shows these are in the range £170-200. I spotted the Millennium Asymetric at under £100 and looking at the forum history, a question was raised a few months ago about how good these tyres are .... but no answers....so thought I'd re-ask the question. Made by Cooper Tyres who also own Avon. Had a couple fitted to my Corolla back in June - due to punctures in the original two Michelins. Tyres were fine around town and on motorway.

The screen wash dosnt work any more.It was fine before the cold weather and snow.

Could it be that the pipes are frozen, fuse blown or the pump has gone?

Any ideas? Thanks. Read more

Come to think of it I think my eldest's DVD player ( Alba/ Bush - 20 odd quid in Argos 4 years ago ) has a whole range of fancy transitions you can select between JPGs when in slideshow mode.

OK, quick question - looking at a 3-4 year old Focus 2 1.6 diesel. The same engine is in the Mazda3, and the cars are a similar price s/h. So, is the Mazda more reliable than the Focus?

If you do a search for problems in the Backroom for Focus, and 3, you get far more Focus ones!

Of course that may be because more Focus' are sold, but still... anyone run a 3 to high mileage here like 200k ... ? Read more

So all owners of CR Diesel engine cars are sitting on ticking time bombs? Whilst
I agree CR systems can be complicated and expensive to fix when they go wrong
its a bit of a sweeping generlisation to say that they will all pack up.
Some manufacturers seem to have more problems than others so rather than the tech being
flawed it may well be the manufacture process.

CR Diesel FI systems and direct injection petrol systems work at incredibly high fuel pressures, this requires a pump with manufacturing tolerances that can be counted in microns, that's why that cost a fortune and is also why they cannot tolerate a poor batch of fuel - which happens more than you'd think. The tiny tolerances mean when they pick up and dump debris into the system, the debris is small enough to go through filters which then takes out the rest of the FI system. It does not matter what manufacturer we're talking about, 99% of cars are fitted with off-the-shelf FI systems so the car manufacturer doesn't come into it. Diesels have a double, sometimes treble whammy of complications thanks to the particulate control systems fitted to them, as well as troublesome dual mass flywheels to hide the vibes of the diesel. The cost of replacing that lot will be more than than the cost of a brand new small hatchback! Look at HJ's car-by-car stuff for supposedly reliable cars like, The Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V or Ford Mondeo - you see entry after entry of diesel related issues. These highly complex systems are a liability and if you keep the car long term it's only a matter of time before they bite you on the butt. You cannot expect space-age engineering tolerances to last in the real world of misfuelling, dodgy/dirty fuel, moisture and running out of fuel with has a very high chance of killing a modern FI pump. It's a shame coz engines are better than ever and should go on forever if regularly serviced.

I've always fancied a Subaru Legacy or impreza estate, although my car current has yet to die. admired them for robustness utility. etc.

I just wondered what they are like i nthe snow and compacted snow that turns to ice.

I've seen a lot of the BMW X5 and X3 "4x4"s (I use the quotes wisely) round here and they seem to get stuck on a bit of frost on the level - all 4 wheels spin round. As do some of the other "fake" 4x4/softroaders.

What are the octavia 4x4 and Audi/VW cars with quattro like ????

Or are they little better than a standard front-wheel drive car once you get to compacted ice - even a a shallow slope onthis seems to really stop most vehicles.

Sister has a toyota Landcruiser and that seems to go up anything, withut even having to engae any of the lock modes....... so clearly there are good 4x4 systems and there are bad 4x4 systems - do the cars have decent ones ? Read more

Most people have never had 4 wheel drive, and never had a problem. I have been driving in N.Yorks, and elswere for 40 years, and only got stuck once, and an old Ford Consul pulled me out. This was in 1965, with a Riley One and a half litre, 1947.
