So been driving a lot in Norfolk the last few days. It's like another world.
For one they have lots of one-way roads, but everybody and I mean everybody just ignores them and drives both ways up and down them. I am genuinely staggered at such widespread wilful disobedience of one-way roads. Many near misses as I just didn't expect anyone to be coming the other way.
The new invention the "single carriageway dual carriageway", i.e. what were obviously built as good old fashioned stretches of dual carriageway with one of the lanes chevroned off guarded by solid no overtake lines. And signed up as "dual carriageway" and "single lane traffic only". Some anti car nutters idea of a good way to run a road system no doubt. What's the speed limit then anyone 70 or 60?
And best of all you're all going to like this the gritting lorries were out gritting the roads, I kid you not. No doubt some council out after some government grant for grit or similar.
Strange strange place

I find the worst part is the Norwich ring road. As my journeys are usually from the A11 to the north coast, it is a part I encounter often. After that, the dogleg on the Acle New Road section of the A47 which often comes as a shock, between long sections otherwise dead straight.
A few months back my engine management light came back on 'again' the only symptom was stalling at start of drive when revs are low.
It has passed its MOT today and came back with an error code P1633 voltage low...
It's a 2001 Fiesta 1.3.
Has anybody got a clue what this could be and how to fix it?
Thanks for any time taken to answer this prob Read more
Hi,
Did you manage to solve this problem? I have the same on my Mondeo V6. Some things I've found out so far are:...
Seems to be putting McLaren's relationship with Mercedes Benz under more pressure, MB see McLaren as a potential competitor, the relationship was already under pressure due to spygate and liegate, altogether the catalyst for MB investing in Brawn GP perhaps. Read more
Still young enough to be gung-ho eh?
Its all relative I guess, at my age choosing a Mini Cooper S from a list of pool cars is probably a little gung-ho ;-)
Although there are various stories on the web I was wondering what your best car was and why.
On the flip side what was your worst car and why.
For me the best car was a Vauxhall Astra 1.6l SXI.
Very reliable but not completely cost free (tires not cheap to replace etc) .
My worst car was a 1990 Ford Escort 1.6l LX (not even injection).
Always munched through light bulbs, engine very rough running (even after new spark plugs and service). Slow acceleration.
On the day I got rid of it the heating fan packed up.
Very much a Friday afternoon build car. Read more
Best, my old Mondy MK3 was so competent as was the Citroen ZX I ran 15 years ago, my current 330d has to be my favourite though.
As for the worst, this was easily the 1996 Vectra CDX I had as my first company car, this had truly dreadful reliability, visited a dealer every 12 weeks on average and they rarely repaired it first time or without 'causing' another fault by breaking something. As a result I've never had another Vauxhall since (that's around 10 sales they've lost in total so far) - and never will - a customer scorned....
I'd share the earlier poster's comments on the A4, but I've expressed my disappointment in other posts so won't reiterate, don't want to sound too 'grumpy' !
Hello.
My step-dad replaced the fan belt of my Fiesta and said that I'd need to tighten it up in a couple of weeks.
Well that time has come and I was hoping somebody would be kind enough to explain to me how to do that!
I've looked in the Haynes manual but I'm still not sure what I'm doing and I'm terrified I'm going to completely mess it up.
I'd be so grateful for any pointers / diagrams! Otherwise it's off to the garage, oh the shame . . .
Thanks. Read more
In '94 it still wouldn't have to go back after a couple weeks!
That's because the PDI inspection would have dealt with it before the customer took ownership of it. Contrary to belief, brand new cars aren't actually 'brand new'. The engine will have been run for a few hours - ie, from the production line & loaded onto the transporter. Off the transporter to the storage area / dealership. Shunted around the dealers car lot to give it different viewings, from the front of the row, to the showroom, test drives, etc.
And when digital odometers came along, dealers can (and quite possibly still do) reset the mileage to zero providing it's not done more than 50 or 100 miles.

I was wondering what the deal is with Opel / Vauxhall using the 1.3l CDTI and 1.9l CDTI Fiat engines.
From what I understand Fiat and Opel had a joint development agreement that was dissolved in a dispute in 2005.
So is there an agreement that Opel can use the Fiat engines for x years ?
Maybe these sort of deals happen more often than not (Rover using peugeot gearboxes for example) but I am surprised Opel can still use the engines with the agreement disssolved. Read more
The original deal was to develop and share engines and platforms.
Since the deal ended, anything shared continues to be made, but evolves in different directions.
e.g. the Vx/Opel 2.0 CDTI produces 160bhp, but the new Alfa 2.0 JTD produces 170bhp...
Baker St W1 to Wales this afternoon. What's the best way onto the M4.
Googlemaps suggests the Westway until the A4000
Multimap suggests the Westway until the A406 North Circular.
In ignorance I would have gone down Park Lane and crawled up the Cromwell Road.
Anybody in the habit of doing this route?
Thanks

Thanks drbe. I only have a few local well worn routes that I developed after many trials.
A4 to A40 going east.
A4 over the Hammersmith Flyover and down to earth
Left at first traffic lights into Gliddon Road ( opposite Barons Court Tube Station)
2nd right into Edith Rd ( one way)
Immediate sharp left back into Auriol Rd
Right into Hammersmith Rd A315
If traffic looks light then past Olympia and over the railway hump.
Left onto Holland Rd A3220
( By the Hilton and the Bristol Cars Show room and ECO expensive petrol station)
Continue on this road to the Shepherd Bush roundabout. ( a lot easier in this direction)
Over the roundabout and past the Westfield Shopping Centre
50 mph Gatso under the Westfield Access bridge.
Right hand lane and onto A40
If the traffic looks heavy as you turn right into Hammersmith Road.
A few yards along ( almost opposite) take left into Blythe Rd.
Follow Blythe Rd round left and left again. ( Now facing west)
Take the first right into Hazlitt Rd
At the end turn Left into Sinclair Rd ( now going North again)
First right at the mini roundabout into Addison Gardens
Over the railway hump
Left at lights ( Left turn only)
Now on Holland Road A3220 so just head north.
Hope this makes sense.
Hello,
just a quick note to see if anyone has an explanation for the following:
A friend's car has failed to start recently; it wouldn't turn over at all, the only effect being an audible clicking from the starter motor. However, when it did this at work yesterday he put it in 1st gear and rocked the car back and forth a few times by hand. Hey presto, it started!
Was wondering what may be the problem (sticking components?) and which components may be the first port to sort out the problem? Read more
And my VW 411, for a while. A bit inconvenient lying beside it in the road in a Paris rush hour reaching round the rear wheel.
It didn't have to be a hammer, anything heavy would do, socket ratchet, wheelbrace, your passenger's airline pilot's Breitling sports watch, anything that weighed a pound or two and was hard...
