Statistical outlier

Had a big debate about this the other evening and wondered what you lot thought.

A friend has changed the standard brakes on his car. He has fitted drilled and slotted disks and red high performance pads (the make of which will come back to me in a second) as he found the OEM parts faded under heavy use.

The point of disagreement was whether this constituted a modification? He thought no, he had just fitted replacement parts. I and most others thought yes - there was a material change in the design of the parts designed to improve performance.

So, 2 questions.

1. Do you think that this is a 'modification' in terms of insurance cover? I think it is.

2. Assuming it is, what might the effect be on his insurance cover should he need to make a claim? I would assume that the insurers would be able to wriggle out of covering his (expensive) car. Read more

I bought some cross drilled brake hoses from Kalecoauto.com and I found the pedal feel
was drastically altered.

>It's an import. Otherwise it would be called a Shogun Sport.

I have a vague memory of Mitsubishi selling a Challenger model in the UK in the 90s, a bit like the Outlander in today's range. A quick Google shows adverts for 90s models with a 2.5TD engine, which doesn't seem likely for an import from Japan.

Been seriously considering a Hyundai i30 estate to replace my 8 yr old Pug 406 diesel estate.
The long warranty sounds enticing and the brand gets good press.
What concerns me is that to keep the warranty valid would I have to have it serviced by Hyundai everytime or could I get an indi garage to service it providing they used Hyundai approved parts, oil etc?
The thought of spending out for 5 years worth of main dealer servicing sounds expensive.
A friend has an i10 and says she's paying £18 per month for the next 2 years servicing but after that she's going to use a local grease monkey. Read more

When we bought our i10, we asked the dealer if we could get it serviced at the local Suzuki outlet which is fifteen miles closer but owned by the same company.

Dealer said that was fine, no problem, but if any warranty work needed doing it had to come to the Hyundai dealership.

Seems fine to me and and improvement on how things used to be.

This is incredible. Not sure how it was done, but absolutely astonishing to watch.

Article says production will be from Swindon for Eurozone and S.Africa

New model Jazz for UK was built in Japan. (We've got one).

I'm curious about the timing of the builds mentioned in the article though - I though they were already well underway with Jazz production at Swindon.

>>the affected bearing will be on the opposite side of the car.

I used to think that, until I needlessly changed the wrong front one.

I now very carefully check both sides for play.

Air bag warning light flashes permanently
It is a regular flash
I believe that cleaning the contacts in the yellow connector under the drivers seat may cure this, is this true? Actually there are two yellow connectors under the seat, which one is it? The most accessible one (ie the one nearest the front of the car) has two wires in and 2 out, the other one looks as if there are more than 2

Usually the pretensioner under the seat, the light should flash 4 times, then rest for a bit, then flash 4 times again to indicate a problem with the pretensioner. Had this problem on my Mondeo, I unplugged the connector, then plugged it back in and that sorted the flashing light.

Dear Honest John,

My Ford Focus (02) TDCi recently had to have a fuel pump, fuel filter and plugs replaced at a local Ford Dealership. My usual trusty mechanic couldn't deal with it due to it all being linked to the ECU. Anyway, 2 weeks later (last night) I picked up the car and immediately a noise and vibrating came from around the clutch area, specifically when the clutch was depressed in a low gear.

I drove back to the dealership and parked in the space I'd only just vacated and gave them back the envelope containing my key etc. I have just called them this morning and politely told them of the problem and the mechanic became immediately defensive saying 'well if it's a clutch then it's a new problem and not our fault - we didn't touch the clutch'. He said he'll take a look and get back to me.

I'd like to know if I have any consumer protection given that the car went in without this problem and came out with it. Are the garage responsible to return to the car to me in a fit working order? Do I have any recourse that this problem appears to have come about while the car is in their possession.

Please help if you can! Read more

The OP is clear "given that the car went in without this problem and came out with it", even if the fuel pump failed and the car was towed to the dealer the OP would know whether it was making the noise before the pump failed or not.
