Acton to Chiswick: A4000 or A406 - Mapmaker
Baker St W1 to Wales this afternoon. What's the best way onto the M4.

Googlemaps suggests the Westway until the A4000

Multimap suggests the Westway until the A406 North Circular.

In ignorance I would have gone down Park Lane and crawled up the Cromwell Road.

Anybody in the habit of doing this route?

Thanks

The way I would go is ---surprisiingly

Westway until it comes to ground just past White City ( beware of Gatso)
1st left Blomfontein Rd
Right onto Uxbridge Rd A4020
3rd left Percey Rd and over the humps to the end
Left at the end Goodwin Rd
forced 2nd right Westville Rd (to avoid humps)
Left into Askew Rd B408
Right at mini roundabout onto Goldhawk Rd A402
Road bears round left and under the underground at Stamford Brook
Right onto Chiswich High Rd A315
Left at lights Chiswick Lane A316
Follow road round to Talgarth roundabout on the A4 and off you go.

Not a difficult route in reality though in minute detail above.
I researched this route some years ago from Paddington to Esher and have used it many many times. (But it is no use in the oposite direction)

Alternative simple route. Westway and take first exit and keep south past the new Westfield site on A3220 until you hit the A4.

Maybe a bit too late for 'this afternoon' but...

I believe the A40 Westway no longer has any traffic lights, so having joined it at Gloucester Place/Baker Street, I'd be inclined to keep going until the M25 and join the M4 that way.

The M25 might be busy, but the so might the North Circular, the othe roads across town and in particular the elevated section of the M4 through Chiswick and Brentford.

Have they got rid of that pestilential set of lights at Park Royal? (first cross-roads after what used to be the White City)?

Somewhat similarly, I normally use Westway, left at the first exit, turn right at the roundabout (the one with the glass water tower on it), turn left at the west end of Sherherd's Bush Green, round Hammersmith Broadway and pick up the A4, then on to the M4.

I too sometimes use that route ( and other varients ) but the roundabout, Shepherds Bush Green and the Hammersmith one way are not at all "user friendly" especially if you are not used to the joys of London dog eat dog driving and are not in the optimum lane.

I would definitely NOT use the North Circ variant! Too many 2 into one restrictions, from Hangar Lane to M4

Did Mapmaker make it or is it another lost soul ?

p.s.

I will add my favourite proven reverse route(s) in case anyone can use them.

I shall look forward to that henry k.

I have long been an admirer of your routes! ;-)

Thanks drbe. I only have a few local well worn routes that I developed after many trials.

A4 to A40 going east.

A4 over the Hammersmith Flyover and down to earth
Left at first traffic lights into Gliddon Road ( opposite Barons Court Tube Station)
2nd right into Edith Rd ( one way)
Immediate sharp left back into Auriol Rd
Right into Hammersmith Rd A315

If traffic looks light then past Olympia and over the railway hump.
Left onto Holland Rd A3220
( By the Hilton and the Bristol Cars Show room and ECO expensive petrol station)
Continue on this road to the Shepherd Bush roundabout. ( a lot easier in this direction)
Over the roundabout and past the Westfield Shopping Centre
50 mph Gatso under the Westfield Access bridge.
Right hand lane and onto A40

If the traffic looks heavy as you turn right into Hammersmith Road.
A few yards along ( almost opposite) take left into Blythe Rd.
Follow Blythe Rd round left and left again. ( Now facing west)
Take the first right into Hazlitt Rd
At the end turn Left into Sinclair Rd ( now going North again)
First right at the mini roundabout into Addison Gardens
Over the railway hump
Left at lights ( Left turn only)
Now on Holland Road A3220 so just head north.

Hope this makes sense.
