It always did perplex me the way the mini lasted for so long, I thought that it really shouldn't have outlived its stablemates at BMC, namely the 1100/1300 that Issigonis also penned. It stands to reason that a car launched in 1959 would not be up to the passive safety standards of the 90's, even with various upgrades, the mini ran with no crumple zones in an era where rivals had sophisticated survival cells.

How bad was the mini in an accident? The HJ write up states they have a very high fatality rate but I guess this is no surprise. I'd really like to see one subjected to a Euro NCAP style test, if only to show how far we've come. I imagine many backroomers will have experience of the original mini and possibly some horror stories too.... Read more

" The most dangerous in this respect must have been the upright swaying black-box"

I had an E93A Ford Prefect built 1952? and side skidded and turned it over, as a witness said "You turned over four times". I climbed out OK but shaken and drove the blessed thing home!

A young family friend's driving school is coming along nicely, and the young woman in question would like to purchase a smallish automatic to expand her business.

She would like a proper auto, which i think is good sense but open to other thoughts.

She likes the look of Hyundai i20 (though Hyundai's website says the infamous warranty doesn't apply to commercial use!!) but i don't know if it's proper auto.

She's going to try the Suzuki Swift which we know is a nice box, and possibly a Sirion.

Any other suggestions for similar auto's, is the i20 a normal auto?

Any smallish Diesel auto's, i can't think of any apart from Astra (?) and the indicators alone rule that out, and i'm none too sure about very modern Diesel with all that slow work anyway.

This will be a purchase, not leasing, so a reliable long termer is important.

Thoughts please? Read more

Update on the Kia situation, i phoned our own local dealer who is very helpful.

It seems Kia Ceeds and Rio's are also in short supply especially auto's, it would appear they and the Sedona are undergoing facelift, am awaiting call if he can locate anything.

Daresay in 12 months time when scrappage is over there'll be dozens of the things going begging.

Edit...seems more than a facelift for the Rio then, thanks HJ.

Hi - just wondered whether anyone has any thoughts as what might be causing this. Had new plugs, leads and new (Ford) coilpack - all fine when first starting out on a drive. Once engine is warm I get a snick / misfire when (for example) pulling away at a roundabout. Seems to happen in all gears if you suddenly put your foot on the gas. In diagnostic mode I am getting around 13.7v so think everything is charging ok. Am running out of ideas now - it's just an annoying problem.

Any ideas? Thanks! Read more

Sounds like a fuel/air problem.....too much air, not enough fuel at the time you try to accelerate. Worth checking the bit's that control that aspect e.g. MAFS etc..

P.S. Might also be worth searching for any small leaks in the inlet side.

Is there any plan to launch a mobile version of the site? Current version is difficult to view from mobile.

Quite a few other forums are opening mobile version.

Just driven 300 miles and constantly had one audi after another driving one inch behind me, and no I was not driving too slow, mostly I had a long line of cars in front of myself plus some sensible braking distance, whether I was doing 5 mph or aherm 100 mph there they were an inch behind

I let countless of them past since they were being so aggresive, but gave up in the end

Really when I get a terminal illness and nothing really matters anymore I'm going to slam the brakes on for one of these people and shoot the pants off him

How did the take all the Hobs out of Hobnobs and leave the other stuff as audi drivers

The BMW's/Mercs/Volvos are still as bad as usual but what are they doing to Audis to turn anyone who drives one into an instant idiot?

What magiv technology do they have to help them survive driving like this?

Somewhere there must be a lot of bodyshops fixing up the front end of crashed Audis?

+1 Vote for the A5 Coupe

The A5 Sportback looks great in pictures as well. The 3 Series Coupe is terrific looking as well, but Audi's just edge it.

How is it that the 3er Coupe is so nice looking, when the saloon & touring are so plain?

Mr.Tee43

My daughter is hankering after a new Mini Cooper Graphite which is a limited edition model. Being dad, it's up to me to try and find the best price so first port of call was Drive the Deal.

Fell at the first hurdle as they don't appear to offer prices on Minis or BMW for that matter.

Is this a case of BMW dealers not wanting to offer deals on their cars and Minis ?

Can anyone offer advise as to where we might obtain the best deal ? Read more

Another John H

As described and shown, likely to be 1108 FIRE of either 55 or 60 bhp.
Later 60's were 1242 FIRE which looks much the same.

Engine was hand built by Roberts - "pass the torque wrench Bob.. Sorry, I haven't got it, I think Bob has...."

Fully
Integrated
Robotised
Engine

Or something like that.

Very first (UK spec) Pandas were 903 pushrod, the 999 FIRE became an option from 1985/6 along with omega rear axle (instead of cart springs). AFAIR.
