I thought a retro- fitted device, to alert drivers when they were exceeding a speed limit, would have a ready market. However, I can only find one available, the Speed Genie from Bridgewater Electronics. It seems to fit the bill as it is stand-alone, i.e. not part of a satellite system. Are there any others? Has any poster fitted one and was it difficult? Read more

thanks JC2 , I'll have to borrow my mates haynes manual and try what you have suggested.I'll let you know how i get on..cheers.
Reading the thread about Audis stuck on your rear and braking etc, I just wonder if any others ever actually test and practise hard braking.
When I say hard I mean HARD.
I quite often find a deserted road, pick a marker spot, get up to a good speed and stand on the brake pedal as hard as I physically can.
If you have never done it, try it because it does a couple of things.
1) It shows you how good modern brakes with ABS ( assuming they are kept in good condition) can stop a car and in a distance far less than that quoted in the highway code.
2) It gives you confidence that in a real emergency, you will know how hard you can brake.
I say this because the other day, I had a go in a Ferrari 360 on an experience day and in the breifing, the instructor was saying how most drivers don't really know what hard braking is and how to apply initial pressure to transfer weight and then ultimate pressure for maximum stopping power and it just reminded me of what I do quite regularly.
Being a " Biker " I know that it pays to practise the art of hard, controlled braking.
All the necessary caveats apply of course. Read more
No the wheels don't actually lock - they shouldn't get anywhere near 100% slip (or
100% lock depending upon how you view it!) The fact that rubber is laid simply
means the tyre is doing significant work with some measure of slip.
That's what I meant, but I'm not as eloquent as you!
Help me please!!!
I have just put my 106 in for mot and it failed miserabley on the emmisions.
The chap at the garage say's it could be the lambada sensor but does not wan't to pin point it to that as it smokes a bit (when warm) after it has been ticking over for a while.
so he said it might be worth doing the valve stem seals aswell.
Is this a job that can be done without taking the head off? , like some of the fords.
Or does it all have to come out?
Thanks for looking
STUART.

Yeah, i do have to keep an eye on it, but i put it down to the rockercover gasket leaking.
Was going to get the mot out of the way and have a look.
Low mileage older car v higher mileage newer car?
I'm after a secondhand mondeo for £3-£5000
I require an automatic and the choice isn't anywhere near as wide as for a manual where I live.
I'm thinking of driving out to see a 2.0 lx on "56 plate" (which I was told is 2006/7) it has done 52.000
I am assured that it is in very good condition but isn't that mileage a bit high for the age? Asking price is £5295
Whereas I could also look at another that has only done 41.000 miles for £3695 but is 2002
Assuming both are in good condition for the year, which represents the best overall deal and what are the main negatives to take into account with mondeos of different ages or mileages

Thank you very much
Things have moved quite quickly and I decided on a 2004 Avensis with 38k on the clock, from a franchised Toyota dealer.
It was the space in the front of the Avensis that was the clincher, it is far roomier up front than the Mondeo I also found the seats suited me and my wife much better. (I can appreciate that the Mondeo's attempt at a more sporty cockpit for driver and front passenger might appeal to others)

It always did perplex me the way the mini lasted for so long, I thought that it really shouldn't have outlived its stablemates at BMC, namely the 1100/1300 that Issigonis also penned. It stands to reason that a car launched in 1959 would not be up to the passive safety standards of the 90's, even with various upgrades, the mini ran with no crumple zones in an era where rivals had sophisticated survival cells.
How bad was the mini in an accident? The HJ write up states they have a very high fatality rate but I guess this is no surprise. I'd really like to see one subjected to a Euro NCAP style test, if only to show how far we've come. I imagine many backroomers will have experience of the original mini and possibly some horror stories too.... Read more

I had an E93A Ford Prefect built 1952? and side skidded and turned it over, as a witness said "You turned over four times". I climbed out OK but shaken and drove the blessed thing home!
A young family friend's driving school is coming along nicely, and the young woman in question would like to purchase a smallish automatic to expand her business.
She would like a proper auto, which i think is good sense but open to other thoughts.
She likes the look of Hyundai i20 (though Hyundai's website says the infamous warranty doesn't apply to commercial use!!) but i don't know if it's proper auto.
She's going to try the Suzuki Swift which we know is a nice box, and possibly a Sirion.
Any other suggestions for similar auto's, is the i20 a normal auto?
Any smallish Diesel auto's, i can't think of any apart from Astra (?) and the indicators alone rule that out, and i'm none too sure about very modern Diesel with all that slow work anyway.
This will be a purchase, not leasing, so a reliable long termer is important.
Thoughts please? Read more
Update on the Kia situation, i phoned our own local dealer who is very helpful.
It seems Kia Ceeds and Rio's are also in short supply especially auto's, it would appear they and the Sedona are undergoing facelift, am awaiting call if he can locate anything.
Daresay in 12 months time when scrappage is over there'll be dozens of the things going begging.
Edit...seems more than a facelift for the Rio then, thanks HJ.
Hi - just wondered whether anyone has any thoughts as what might be causing this. Had new plugs, leads and new (Ford) coilpack - all fine when first starting out on a drive. Once engine is warm I get a snick / misfire when (for example) pulling away at a roundabout. Seems to happen in all gears if you suddenly put your foot on the gas. In diagnostic mode I am getting around 13.7v so think everything is charging ok. Am running out of ideas now - it's just an annoying problem.
Any ideas? Thanks! Read more
Sounds like a fuel/air problem.....too much air, not enough fuel at the time you try to accelerate. Worth checking the bit's that control that aspect e.g. MAFS etc..
P.S. Might also be worth searching for any small leaks in the inlet side.
Is there any plan to launch a mobile version of the site? Current version is difficult to view from mobile.
Quite a few other forums are opening mobile version.

Just a gentle wind up, Lud, as a professional driver in the past, and never having been accused of holding up the traffic, even when driving 30 odd tons, I agree with your view on mimsers.
