I've seen booster packs that claim to do up to 2.5l petrol engines and yet state CCA of 400.

Any batteries quoted for my car seem to start at 480 CCA. Does even a flat battery lend some CCA when jumping? Read more

How to fiddle it?-usually by the quality of the connection of the clamps/spikes to the terminals. You and I know what we are doing but there are plenty of people even on these fora that will be shown a needle/light in the "RED" and buy a new one.

Hi all - what would be a reasonable price to pay for;
A4 Avant with the 90PS 1.9 TDi engine thats got 162K on the clock.
Clutch was done 6 months ago but apparently has a bit of judder when pulling away at cold - according to seller he's been told it probably wants a fluid change.
MOT until Oct 2009, no TAX.
Bodywork in generally reasonable condition, small dents and scratches here and there.
Standard cloth interior, all electrics work with CD player.
Car is on a 1997 R Plate.
Some service history, but not sure when cam belt was last changed.

I'm thinking maybe to offer about the £500 mark on the basis that cam belt & water pump will cost £300 + £100 for 6 months tax.

Any thoughts? :) Read more

I'm just in the process of buying a full exhaust for my old but reliable 1.9TD 405 1996 estate. I prefer to take this to a garage some 16 miles away. As the part needs to be ordered in advance, the garage has asked whether this model has a CAT. They feel sure it probably doesn't.

So, does anyone know whether this was standard issue on these vehicles? I've had a little look near the engine bay & I can see something 'bolted' onto the exhaust. However, as my 'expertise' begins and ends with changing the oil & filters I don't really know what I'm looking for. I know I'll have to have this checked properly, but a quick word from someone here would be appreciated & might save me from an extra outing to my garage!

Thanks .. as ever!!

Focus 1999 1.6L started to misfire during a long run, noticed it was sounding rough but first thought that the Exhaust was going (this may still be the case but there is a definite misfire) .
I think that I may also have later over-revved it too.

What is the worst case scenario? I don't want to spend too much on an old Car.

I have a slight but steady diesel leak coming from the solenoid on the pump.it appears to be weeping from the top of the solenoid, the crimped part. How difficult is this to repair and is there any problems i should be aware off when doing so?

My Alternator died yesterday!!!
Maybe the seapage had killed it.
Very strange, solenoid changed about 3 months ago, all works fine, read this thread mentions seaping can kill alternator. Post a reply on Tuesday night and my alternator dies Wednesday morning, very spooky.
Not getting it fixed, as car going for scrappage in a few weeks time, so will put battery on charger each night to keep it going.

Hi there,
Hope I can get some advise over the following areas, since am a new citroen xantia 1.9TD owner. I like the car because of its features. Also am a middle class income category. Just bought the car because of cheap diesel price and low mileage. I really trying to get read of the following problem. But very difficult to mention to the car workshop and don?t know what to tell. Please give some advice over on this.

Cannot judge Car Temperature (radiator water too corroded and yellow orange in color).
1. If I drove the car continuously more than 200 KM distance with the avg speed of 100km/h, along the way if I happen to drive car thru any uphill I gear down and it cause the temperature went more than 80 degree very fast. Once I get into normal road, the temperature maintain to 60 to 70. Outside temperature average 30 degree C. if I continuously drive up to 20 KM with the speed of 50 to 60KM/H uphill using 3 and 4 gear. The temperature can easily reach the maximum level. I have to stop and add water upto 2 to 3 liters. Then the temperature remain the normal 60 to 70. Recently made a water leak test and the Forman claim just by pass the heater matrix system due the weather condition, and he claims that we wouldn?t need to heater matrix system and he by the water tube by not going to matrix system. I found the water come out from coolant expansion tank filler cap too corroded and yellow orange. Please advice on this.
Clutch engage problem.
1. Even though full clutch pressed the second gear always engage with uncomfortable engaging.
Engine automatically off during morning sometimes.
1. In the morning time, While car runs when I give more gas automatically the engine like off or get decreasing the throttle, the more I press the less the throttle and like engine wants to give up. But after sometimes it can be normal and I can use like normal.
High mileage
1. 1 liter diesel city ride 9 to 10 km / Liter. Hi way 13 to 14 KM/liter.
Hydralic oil always leaking hydraulic fluid level indicator.

Your loss of water and susequent rise in temperature is probably being cause by a leaking head gasket, when you drive the engine hard the internal pressure increases and blows the water out of the overflow.

The 'crunching' when changing gear may be due to worn synchromesh on that gear, especially if it only does it in one gear.

The lack of engine power when cold is probably due to a clogged fuel filter, try changing it. If not, you could have an air leak in the fuel system allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank when parked.

May I remind everyone about one of the best events in the country?

www.classicsonthecommon.com/history1.htm

It's a general event, not marque specific. The total number of exhibitors is limited this year for safety reasons, but it's still going to be well over a thousand.

Unless you are an exhibitor, it's best to get there by train: park at Luton Parkway or St Albans. Services very frequent; the event site is within easy walking distance of the station and of dozens of pubs and restaurants, and a very good fish & chips shop.

Weather permitting, it's a great way to spend a balmy evening, and there's not a lot of rivet counters about.

I'm not involved formally, but am just an enthusiastic local supporter. Read more

If this event was held this weekend I might be able to participate, but as I was working today :(

Has anybody had one of these things? We need a replacement vehicle for the Merc that appears to be eating itself. 3.0 V6 only option for me as we only do 3-5k per annum. CBC breakdown says not crash friendly, but apart from that any views. The extra height helps a little at grass covered junctions (verges) and around the lanes.

Looked at the Mazda 2/3 yrs ago - found the car to be OK but
like the chap above found the seating "odd". Reason I did not buy 2nd hand
was the condition of the cars - they had had a hard life.

Thanks Guys. Not looking too favourable then!

Just looks like prudent government to me - £120m in resettlement money is a mere drop in the ocean compared to the many billions that would have been sucked into developing new models.

Obviously the govt couldn't be seen to kick their union-represented workers into touch, hence the non-disclosure of some correspondence.
