Going on from the thread on the person who brought a dodgy Alfa Romeo, what is the law regarding a 'motor trader'?
Im thinking of selling a couple of cars a month from home, around the £3000 - £6000 mark, they would be around 5-7 years old and ex lease cars.
By law, what is my legal obligation to the buyer in regards to warranty? Read more
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but this isn't about which is the best financially (well it may be a bit)
I prefer diesels over petrol engines, but our milage (about 8k a year) doesn't justify it on cost alone. However that isn't the real issue.
I know that diesels are great for mile munching. How are they in term of longlevity, reliability, maintanance costs for lots of very short journeys. School run, short commute to work, shoppping etc etc.
I'm specifically looking at the Ford 1.6 diesel

Hi, was hoping someone would be able to offer some advice on my Focus problem.
To summarise a long-winded story, the engine blew and an engineering specialist place said they could replace the pistons and piston rings even though other places had told me this wasn't possible. They did the work and all was fine for 4 weeks till engine blew again. Now all 4 pistons needed replacing instead of 2. 4 weeks later they tell me they did this but the bottom of the engine needs replacing too and will look on ebay for a part. Having just done a google I find sites saying you cant replace the bottom of a zetec engine. Am I better off telling these guys that it's not possible and that I want a replacement engine or let them get on with it, the car has been off the road for 4 weeks and its causing us major problems. I'm in Bedford, just done a seach on yell and there's a few dismantlers around so will give them a ring tomorrow.
Like many people I am trying to find the perfect car. This car will be a workhorse, A motorway cruiser, a great sunday morning blaster, a welcolme friend at the airport after a 20 hour flight. You get the idea, Now the catch, We have the usual sensible car which my wife will be using. I also have the expensive toy for the weekends so alough this car will be clocking up the most miles it will be the cheapy (£1200). I really would like an European car so here is my long shortlist so far.
Nissan Primera GT
Seat Ibiza, Leon or Toledo (Diesel)
pug 306 d turbo
Now any ideas or comments to confuse me more most welcolme.
Thank you
Edited the thread title to give it some meaning. "Confusion sollution please" means nothing to any of us - you need people to want to read your threads. Rob (Moderator)

Don't expect too much. At £1200 no car will be perfect.
Nonsense! Moonshine's car looks absolutely superb, for instance.

I have a problem with this Micra. It runs very well but at times will cut out when you are stopped at traffic lights idling.I have checked spark plugs and their gaps, added redex and hammered it down the motorway where it went very well but now and again you can feel a surge. As soon as I got home and let it idle, after about a minute it starts idling eratically and then cuts out.Any advice on what to check next will be much appreciated. Please can you post a follow-up letting us know how you get on, and whether or not this solved the problem?
I prefer auto transmissions, always rent them, but own a manual because SWMBO was given the keys of an auto to move without any thought of instruction by her boss and frightend herself (twice). How do I convince her that autos are easier to drive than manuals. I have offered to rent an auto to teach her how to drive one, and explained the auto driving licence limitations due to manuals being more difficult to drive.
Any other ideas? New car on the horizon, I want auto, she wont entertain.
New SWMBO not an option, too expensive! Read more
>>. Also it s virtually impossible to stall an auto.
You've clearly never driven with my father!
I've never known anyone to make a constant hash of driving at automatic... he's owned it for 12 years and still messes it up!
I'm not fond of the idea of an automatic, I like being able to choose my gears - I know the road conditions the box doesn't. (maybe its a female thing)
My mrs focus recently hand new front discs and pads, about a week later there was a knock/click each time you pressed the brake pedal. Took it back to the guy who fitted them and he said it was the anti rattle clips not having enough tension in them? which he fixed and has been fine until now, its doing it again.
Is this a common problem with these clips as we have never had this before. Is this something I can rectify my self rather than troop all the way back to the mechanic who cant look at it until next weekend.
Really want this sorted as I dont want the brakes to be unsafe and its also got its MOT due
Any advice would be great
Thanks Read more
It's unlikely that the pads would move enough to "clunk" unless they're the wrong pads altogether and are significantly smaller. Most aftermarket pads I have used have been tighter than the originals. I'd guess at movement in the sliding part of the caliper that's causing it. If the calipers are at a stage where the anti-rattle springs are weak, then probably the guide/slider pins are worn and the calipers sound like they are in need of a refurb. Also, check the wheel nuts for tightness and suspension components for play.
Hi all I'm new to this, I've recently got the cylinder head off my 1.4 MPI Xreg peugeot 306.
Whilst my head was off the crank was turned and caused the liners to pop up a bit... I've pushed them back down but am unaware of what consequences this might cause?
I've seen a similair sort of thread about this, about the coolant mixing with oil, but there is no coolant in my system because it was drained prior to removing the head. So what I really want to know is have I broken some seals which means when I do refill with coolant it's goin to mix with the oil?
Any help/advice/opinions would be very very much appreciated, thank you. Read more
Thanks guys for all your replies!
It seems I probably could replace the liner seals then, but to be honest... I can't be bothered. The engine needs a new cylinder head anyway, which will cost upwards of £50 for a used one probably.
I'm thinking, I know someone selling a complete engine with ECU, and wiring loom for £180, the reason I need the ECU and wiring loom is because I'm putting a 1.6 in there instead :D
So that's my trail of thought now..
Cheers :)
I am writing to ask for advice regarding a used car I recently bought. The car was bought approximately 6 weeks ago. The price was £1999, and I part exchanged my car (at £1200), therefore paying £800 cash on top.
The car broke down whilst travelling on the motorway and was taken to the nearest garage. I was informed that the big end had completely broken and it would cost more than the car was bought for to repair it (a new engine, labour costs etc).
I contacted the dealership where I bought the car and the dealer told me that my warranty would only cover £300 towards the cost of repair. When I advised that it would not be worth trying to repair the car due to the cost, the most he could offer was to meet me half way on the cost of getting it recovered. I have yet to do this.
Please could you advise me as to the liability of the dealer in terms of getting my money back from him. I do not want to arrange getting the car written off / scrapped until I am aware of my rights. I understand how to make a small claim, but wanted your opinion in terms of the dealer's liability and the legislation that would apply. The last MOT was carried out on 2/10/2008 (by the previous owner).

I don't think anyone is claiming that the provisions of SOGA constitute a "Warranty". What it seems to do is lay down a legal framework within which the matters can be dealt with. I still think that 125 miles in 6 weeks from purchase and the sump correctly filled is going to go well for the purchaser, whether he negotiates with the seller or takes it court.

I didn't explain the precise method I used. I attached second (1 metre long) piece of clear PVC tube onto the first piece which had been inserted into the dipstiick tube and which would carry the oil. The second piece was slightly larger in diameter to the first and the two pieces were connected by merely inserting the first piece into the second piece. The fit was good enough to form an airtight seal between the two pieces. I sucked onto the open end of the second piece until the oil reached the end of the first piece. I then separated the two pieces of tube and immeciately lowered the then open end of the first piece into a container to catch the oil which would be siphoned out. The oil didn't come closer than a metre of my mouth so their was no risk of it getting into my mouth. I'm not as green as I'm cabbage looking!
