Hi all - what would be a reasonable price to pay for;
A4 Avant with the 90PS 1.9 TDi engine thats got 162K on the clock.
Clutch was done 6 months ago but apparently has a bit of judder when pulling away at cold - according to seller he's been told it probably wants a fluid change.
MOT until Oct 2009, no TAX.
Bodywork in generally reasonable condition, small dents and scratches here and there.
Standard cloth interior, all electrics work with CD player.
Car is on a 1997 R Plate.
Some service history, but not sure when cam belt was last changed.
I'm thinking maybe to offer about the £500 mark on the basis that cam belt & water pump will cost £300 + £100 for 6 months tax.
Any thoughts? :)

With the short MoT , 162k and dodgy clutch etc. you could either end-up with an expensive scrapper, or a decent car for a few years with a modest expense.
You realy need an expert to give it the once-over before parting with money

Is it old enough for the scrappage scheme? If it is, its worth £2000.

Cant I'm afraid as you will have had to own it a year to be eligible for scrapping it off.

Good luck getting money off on the basis it has no tax! That's usually factored into the asking price, the clutch is what to focus on
Can't see him dropping £400, the base price for n-reg petrols is about £500

A years ago I sold (for a friend) an Audi 80 saloon with the same engine. Fresh MoT, some tax, 90k, pretty full SH, but I can't remember the cam belt's age. Went on Ebay for £820, which I thought was high. It had some very light damage to the driver's door, but was really very nice indeed. One owner.
I'd keep looking for a good one. This could be a bargain, or a right royal PITA.

I agree with old. Unless you're on a very tight budget (and even you are) you should be able to find a better, less risky example. I would have thought £1k would get you a nice T reg with say 2 owners and 150k miles, though the scrappage scheme may mean that some nice motors have gone to the crusher.
Keep looking, you've got too much to lose. The lack of cambelt history is worrying and probably means that the necessary changes haven't been made and it could be on the original belt!

Somewhere there is one with a belt that has recently been done. It won't make the car worth any more, but it will save you £200-£300.
Are you certain the waterpump is driven off the cambelt? It varies.

Thanks for all the replies!
Well, had a good gander over it this evening, and apart from a couple of small dents, one on the rear boot just under the window where someone had used a screwdriver to bang the rear windscreen, and one on the passenger offside door where someone on a bike decided to bang into, again, not huge, but enough to notice when you get reasonably close.
It does have a full service history and all the previous MOT's!
Last MOT had all front suspension bushes replaced and as I mentioned the clutch was replaced. Again, the clutch operates fine when car has warmed up after a few minutes, leading me to think that the hydraulics probably do just need bleeding off.
Have checked the cambelt and it does look reasonably new and in good nick, no frays or splits.
Only thing is though, is that on the rear suspension, on both sides, the rubber gaitor that cover the central suspension rod has come away, leaving the rubber washers sitting at the base of the suspension, and the rod clearly visible.
Offer of £650 was accepted - he wanted £750, so I've left him till the weekend so I can check a couple more things out!
Got a few pics if I can post links on here?
