Hi,

I have a 1.8 1999 Focus TDi with a self diagnosed fuel pump problem.

The car cut out and will no longer start. It turns over fine but is getting no fuel.
I've done the obvious things and it would appear to be the fuel pump.

As this is a major unit and usually mapped to the cars ecu / immobiliser I am enquiring about having the unit reconditioned.

Has anyone any experience of using these people?
wwwDOTdieselpumprepairsDOTcom (replace the DOT with a . )
Or can anyone make any recomendations other than ford as to who I could have look at the pump?

Anyone else have any ideas? If I can't take this route I think the car maybe scrap!

Thanks

thanks for replies.
I've done more research and had a good look at the situation.

everyone I've spoken to so far wants 4 figures to fix (without even looking at it!!!!)
doesn't inspire much faith as I know it could be something which is far cheaper to fix than that even at £50 per hour.

If I swap the whole pump I know it will be immobilised until someone can reprogramme the ECU to match the new pump. Ford can do it but they just refuse to here in France and there seem to be no black market ecu programmers in the area (maybe I didn't mention that's where the car is!)

I could swap the pump for a recon and swap the pump edc over so it's not immobilised (it's not too tricky a job) but if it's the pump edc thats gone then I've got nowhere.

I think I'm going to risk sending my edc to those guys and see what happens.
If they say it was bust and fix it then it should be problem solved.
If they say it's ok then I'll try and source and 2nd hand pump and put my edc on it.

To be honest it all looks a bit of a long shot to me.
I will keep this thread updated just for anyone else who has the same problem.

once again thanks to anyone who has offered advice.

#### ONE LAST QUESTION.####
What equipment would ford use to get an error code from my car ECU regarding the pump?
It's an area I know nothing about.

cheers

Hi Guys, hoping you might be able to point me in a good direction on this as I'm at a loss....

my 1.9cdti vectra has an unrepairable hole in the braided flexipipe section (near front roughly under dashboard) which my local vauxhall dealer quoted me £400 to replace. they were unsure (because they are idiots) as to whether it was part of the cat or not. my dilemma is; as it's noisy but not urgent do I sit on till it REALLY goes, as the £400 option is the only one, OR
does anyone know if I can just replace the flexipipe, and at a considerably lower cost????? and if so, where???

anything you know would be massively appreciated.

Yeah the problem with internet suppliers, etc. is that pretty much everything seems to be for the vectra B (95-02) with the 1.7,2.0 etc. sizes. Someone has mentioned MIJ in Walsall to me. can anyone recommend this lot???

I would appreciate some help on the tools required to remove the rear brake drums on the Focus II. On previously owned Fords I've removed the 4 hex head bolts holding the spindle carrier to the rear suspension and then removed the spindle assembly complete with brake drum. On this car the bolts are Torx head. Does any know the size of the Torx bit which fits these bolts? If I buy the correct size 1/2" drive Torx bit is there sufficient clearance to get to the bolts with standard 1/2" drive extension bars and universal joint?

I found this link relating to the Mk 1 Focus which is very detailed and shows the hex head bolts and better access on the previous model. www.focushacks.com/index.php?modid=48

Thanks for the replies. On further investigation a rear brake drum on this car can be removed by removing the wheel and the the grip washer on one of the wheel studs and then pulling the drum off over the studs. In practise this can be difficult due to corrosion on the brake drum and wheel hub but it can be done.

Hello,
Seems Costco are doing their usual time-limited offer. I know it is still running this weekend at the Chester branch, but for how long I know not. Seems a decent offer, had a look around other sites but cannot see anyone able to match prices on that particular tyre(Michelin Energy Saver).

They used to do cheap motor oil but nowadays the offers are nothing special.

They done Mobil-1 for £23 inc VAT for years, which I think is cheaper than anywhere else, even eBay sellers. It's only a 4L pack though, but 5L is typically at least £40 elsewhere.

This car uses active abs sensors so there are no reluctor rings. The speed signal from the sensors is picked up from the magnetic wheel bearings .You will need to get a diagnostic check to see what is going on.hth

As long as it has the space in the vehicle for a spare, why not go to a scrappy and buy the wheel of your choice??

The error code is lambda sensor low voltage. Basicaly I have made a post a few weeks ago about my car loosing power but no error code was recorded. Today it lost power again this time more scary than the other ones. I took it to my mechanic who had it on his expensive ECU tester and found an error code low lambda voltage. He was not sure how this could cause my power loss so he looked deeper into the history and found my engine keeps going into limp mode.

EGR valve is apparantly fine or at least no errors codeded there. The problem is now how to proceed? A new lamdba sensor is £95 trade but he isn't convinced this will solve the problem. He tried to clear the code but it keeps coming back.

So the plan so far is to buy a new lamdba sensor if this does not cure it buy a new MAF but I wondered if there was anything else other than the EGR which is worth checking?

Also just worried that I have recently put a bit of redex into the car. I put the correct mixture in and the car seems to pink a bit less (pinking has been an on going problem but it seems to be getting better with time) so I am not sure how this would affect the lamdba sensor? Read more

Just replaced the MAF myself ensuring the arrow was the right way. It seems to rev a lot faster now and it seems smoother to drive. The pinking issue seems to have gone right down as well. However when speeding up harshly from say 20 - 30 there is a tiny sputter which feels like a miss fire, I think this may be a seperate problem but as longs as the random complete power loss issue has gone I can live with a miss fire. It also seems to start a little quicker.

It will be too early to tell for sure if this problem has gone for good, too much traffic out atm, done 5 miles but its all city traffic so I could not rag it like I would need to fully test it.

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction... My wife's Y-Reg Focus is making a whining noise under reasonable hard acceleration. It's noticeable in the higher gear ranges (3-5), and seems to be a whine/fast tinny ticking/rattling sound, it's difficult to tell. The car's done 69k, a gradual acceleration and the sound isn't there, it's more when you put your foot down. The performance hasn't changed since the sound started, around 2 weeks ago.

Would be either a slipping timing belt squeaking rapidly, or turbo problem sound like they might be likely culprits with the 1.8 TDDi (90) engine? I've heard of 'turbo whine' but I'm not sure what kind of sound this generates. In terms of turbos, is this getting into expensive-to-fix territory?

Ford want £85 just to look at it for an hour, it's got to the stage where I need to find a good independent garage in/around Derby methinks. Again - any suggestions would be most welcome!

Many thanks

I'm not sure how easy or hard it would be to change the turbo, if you can trace the exhaust manifold either at the front or the back of the engine, the turbo will be bolted on to that. It should give you a rough idea of what's involved.

I don't think a garage would have a problem diagnosing and fitting if you get the turbo. I reckon the turbo would be about £50 - £250 second-hand and it should take about 1 - 2 hours to fit. I know Fords had a reputation for being fairly easy to work on and I think it is still the case.

Hope this helps :)
