I was wondering is is safe to remove the 2 plastic covers on the underside of my 307 HDi (rapier 90 if it makes any difference). Or do I need to start trawling the scrappers? I only ask as they are currently falling to peices partly due to neglect on behalf of the previous owner and my local councils enthusiam for speed humps. Read more
That Passat handbrake discussion got me wondering... I was taught to leave my car in gear when parking, regardless of whether its on a hill or not and my eldest daughter obviously does the same... but it took my wife some time to get used to having to knock it out of gear before starting it up as she never did!
So, who leaves it in gear, and who doesnt?

Same here, but maybe more damage if the car is shunted and the transmission takes a knock?
Hi folks
Recently acquired Focus 1.8 TDCi Zetec hatchback, 03 plates, 105k miles
I have a persistent problem with starting the car first thing in the morning, it judders at the first attempt and then catches on the second or third. For the rest of the day the car will start first attempt and it generally drives wit no problems at all. I read an interesting post on another forum where someone had the same symptoms and they had a brief reply about air draining into the diesel overnight, can anyone elaborate on this potential cause?
I recently bought a replacement cam sensor from an autofactors online but the one that arrived is black and seems to be larger in diameter to the grey sensor that is currently fitted, does anyone have any ideas on this too....
Any helpful responses would be very gratefully received, I'm having a baby in two weeks and don't want to have to worry about this stupid car any more!!!!

Most probable cause is air leaking INTO the fuel system overnight.Get underneath at the tank and check all unions and examine any plastic pipe connectors. These can rub against the underneath and let air in. An easy way to test unions is to liberaly cover them all with a thick grease
Recently my above mentioned car was parked( I put on the automatic handbrake) on a hill on a side road. I was gone about 15minutes and as I was returning I saw the car rolling down the hill. It came a halt when it hit a bus shelter which was demolished and my car was badly damaged at the back. Luckily there was nobody in the bus shelter and in its travels it did not hit anybody. Thank goodness .
Any advice on this please.

Faulty Electronic Parking Brakes (EPB) on Passats have been reported by a number of owners. VW refuse to acknowledge the problem. Problems include:
- Failure to apply...
Mentioned this before on this site and my car has been running perfectly the past 300 miles but was crossing major junction today and the engine did not respond to that I was increasing preasure on the throttle, it was quite scary.
I've checked the thottle cable and it seems to be fine so I am suspecting an AFM fault. There is no ECU fault codes but apparantly on the 1.2 16v faulty AFMs usualy do not show a fault unless its very bad. The other sting is that people have had ECU problems resulting in cheap after market AFMs so it is advised to use a Bosch one but they are £100.
Is there anyway of testing the AFM before replacing it and hoping for the best? Read more
Oops sorry if I caused offence there. I just meant that people don't always bother to complain/notice thicks not that your customers are thick. I sometimes do a job and a customer tells me 6 months later it didn't fix it, I just think I wish you had told me earlier as there is nothing worse than a customer potentialy not being happy.
I will get that throttle cable checked out tomorrow while he does the clutch cable (pedal is down to the floor which cannot be normal) if he still can't find anything I might just risk £60 and replace the MAF myself, I have taken out the MAF on my dads Fiesta so I can't see it being much different.
Hi guys,
Just bought a secondhand car and the inside smells a bit musty. It's been sitting for a few months so it may be a bit damp inside but I've checked all the interior and it's all dry. Likewise all the metalwork is good and no water is getting in.
Any tips for getting rid of the musty smell?
Thanks Read more
Thanks for all your replies. I've got a dehumidifier so I'll set that up today, then I'm going to wash all the interior followed by a liberal spraying of Fabreze.
Thanks
Hi
My son bought a 106 Zest 1.1 (S-Reg) and now it has a problem which I can't solve.
We noticed the car was overheating from the radiator cap.
On closer inspection I realised the cooling fan was never coming on.
So after a series of tests I found that the fan was good, radiator fan switch is good but the top hose was never getting hot, thus the switch never activating and therefore not turning fan on.
I assumed thermostat problem and REPLACED this but i made no difference.
Running the car - coolent gets hot, top hose cold - over heats.
I'm now thinking water pump? But I can't even find it on the car, the Haynes manual is next to useless.
I understand head gasket is also a contender - but no visible water trace in oil.
Just read about K-Seal - would you recommend using this regardless??
Also air lock possibility? - I've run it for ages with radiator cap off, it just eventually boiled over.
I'm at a loss - any ideas?
Many thanks. Read more
The reason the fan isn't cutting in is because the heat and pressure in the top hose is more than likely hot gasses rather than water. If the top hose is rock hard it's a sure sign the head gasket has gone. I'm starting to sound like a prophet of doom I know but I've had these kind of issues numerous times in my time as a car dealer.
Hi guys. I've got a 99 Jeep grand cherokee 4.7 automatic. I have recently have had no end of bother with the binding brake on both of front brakes.
It seems ok once you start off everday but it gradually starts to get worse the further that you drive. After driving a couple of miles the caliper is red hot, and it's stuck on.
The problem strated around a week ago with only passenger side brake and we've now had problems on both sides.
The local garage said it MUST be brake servo problem and ask me to get it changed. However, the quot price is £400+.
My question is: what could cause such problem? Is really gonna be the brake servo? or something else?
Thanks Read more
Can anyone help I seem to have a very similar/same problem. I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have just had new brake pads all round. Since then I have had a binding problem that started on the front drivers side but now seems to be all around the car. Its been back to the nmechanic twice and he doesnt seem to have a clue... Seems to happen more when im in built up traffic rather than motorway driving but the result is smoking tyres and very hot discs. Desperate for help!!!!
Hi Bullittwig,...
So i get home to find a NIP from Gwent police to say i was caught on camera doing 68 in a 50 zone that was near the m4 toll plaza. Now from what i can remember i never saw any 50 limit signs at all and the fact that is says 68 indicates to me i 'thought' it was a 70 limit.
I am in no way saying that i was not doing 68 in a 50, just that i was not aware it was a 50. Does anyone know that bit of road at all and can confirm signage relating to limits there, and as far as i was aware you could not have cameras on motorways unless there were variable speed limits in place, roadworks as an example.
Just annoying as first ticket in 15 years of motoring
thanks

Do write to your MP. Writing to my MP has been very interesting.
I'm amused by those comments from various people who are obviously perfect drivers and take the view that anyone caught speeding here or anywhere deserved it. We can't all be perfect drivers and I accept that I'm not one. But even though I was not perfect I hadn't been fined until this particular spot so I took a bit of interest in it just to see whether I could explain it to myself and as I have said compared with many other instances these signs are poor and I would contend inadequate. Now I could be wrong about that perhaps they are adequate but my point is that the best proof of whether they are adequate is that if they are there should not be a lot of fines in this area, so I would like to know whether there are.
Returning to the subject of writing to my MP. He is doing a very good job of appearing to take it seriously and first wrote to the Safety Camera Partnership Manager in May who palmed him off saying that it was the South Wales Police who would have to give that information. It has been necessary for him to go through the Freedom of Information Act to request this data and the first request appears to have been ignored so he sent a reminder to them which has now resulted in a refusal by the police to supply the information claiming exemption on three counts 1. Law Enforcement (no specific reason why) 2. Health and Safety (No specific reason why) 3. That giving this "detailed" information might enable arch criminals like myself to "identify patterns of enforcement activity".
Well my MP, to his credit without me needing to press has appealed forcefully against this refusal and so I hope that I will find out how many fines there are in this spot.
However, a second approach from another MP would add weight and I can't see really why anyone here who has an interest can't support that.
If you are interested in road safety and want to support the use of cameras remember that safety is only improved if people slow down. If, for some reason, lots of people are still speeding, would it not be sensible to ask why and if a lot of money has been generated could someone not spend a tiny fraction of it on more or better signs to see if that really improved safety by reducing the number of people speeding? The only objection I can see to that is that putting up better signs would reduce the "take" and hit the budget.
It is certainly interesting that the South Wales police seem so reluctant to disclose this information.
For anyone interested in writing to their MP you could make reference to the fact that Nick Ainger, MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire is following this up at the moment.
I currently have 205/45/16 low profile tyres on my car (Chysler Neon RT 2001)
Please excuse my naivety but can i put on 'normal' tyres in replacement? If so what would be my size options? Also would the differet tyres make the car "softer" (i currently feel every lump and bump!) Read more

Wrong on my car too.

It's most likely a bit of both, My boss has a 307 (younger than mine) and its constantly been in the garage, my dads fiance has a 407 which was a total wreck, also a friend of mine (who works for Citroen) bought a C2 diesel that while doing 70 had a bit of suspension/steering give up and shove her headlong into the central reservation. Twin this with various other reports of French automotive engineering prowess from other friends I think the term once bitten twice shy is apt. Definately going for something German or Japanese for the next motor.
