the handbrake warning light keeps appearing randomly on my dashboard. 90% of the time it comes on is when I'm braking or in 1st gear, but every now and again it pops on for a few seconds when i'm on the motorway?

I have read a few topics on here and found it usually means that the brake fluid is low, however i have checked it and it is at maximum level.

Is it as simple as its just time to replace the brakes?

Cheers

brilliant - that worked. thanks

Now can you explain why my "bulb out" light flashes on every now and again (maybe once a week) when non of my bulbs are out?

I have to replace the door check strap on the drivers door. To do this I will have to remove the interior door trim.
I have had a look and there are no obvious securing screws or fasteners. I have put a wide blade behind and pulled but am loathe to put any further force until I really know what I am doing.
So how is the interior door trim removed?

Thanks for that, likely to be needing that info soon as my deadlocking isn't working. I am assuming I have deadlocking as both my previous Focuses had it. Anyone know if a 2006 1.6TDCi Studio was supplied with deadlocks?

I was wondering is is safe to remove the 2 plastic covers on the underside of my 307 HDi (rapier 90 if it makes any difference). Or do I need to start trawling the scrappers? I only ask as they are currently falling to peices partly due to neglect on behalf of the previous owner and my local councils enthusiam for speed humps. Read more

It's most likely a bit of both, My boss has a 307 (younger than mine) and its constantly been in the garage, my dads fiance has a 407 which was a total wreck, also a friend of mine (who works for Citroen) bought a C2 diesel that while doing 70 had a bit of suspension/steering give up and shove her headlong into the central reservation. Twin this with various other reports of French automotive engineering prowess from other friends I think the term once bitten twice shy is apt. Definately going for something German or Japanese for the next motor.

That Passat handbrake discussion got me wondering... I was taught to leave my car in gear when parking, regardless of whether its on a hill or not and my eldest daughter obviously does the same... but it took my wife some time to get used to having to knock it out of gear before starting it up as she never did!

So, who leaves it in gear, and who doesnt?

Same here, but maybe more damage if the car is shunted and the transmission takes a knock?

Hi folks
Recently acquired Focus 1.8 TDCi Zetec hatchback, 03 plates, 105k miles

I have a persistent problem with starting the car first thing in the morning, it judders at the first attempt and then catches on the second or third. For the rest of the day the car will start first attempt and it generally drives wit no problems at all. I read an interesting post on another forum where someone had the same symptoms and they had a brief reply about air draining into the diesel overnight, can anyone elaborate on this potential cause?

I recently bought a replacement cam sensor from an autofactors online but the one that arrived is black and seems to be larger in diameter to the grey sensor that is currently fitted, does anyone have any ideas on this too....

Any helpful responses would be very gratefully received, I'm having a baby in two weeks and don't want to have to worry about this stupid car any more!!!!

Most probable cause is air leaking INTO the fuel system overnight.Get underneath at the tank and check all unions and examine any plastic pipe connectors. These can rub against the underneath and let air in. An easy way to test unions is to liberaly cover them all with a thick grease

Recently my above mentioned car was parked( I put on the automatic handbrake) on a hill on a side road. I was gone about 15minutes and as I was returning I saw the car rolling down the hill. It came a halt when it hit a bus shelter which was demolished and my car was badly damaged at the back. Luckily there was nobody in the bus shelter and in its travels it did not hit anybody. Thank goodness .

Any advice on this please.

Mentioned this before on this site and my car has been running perfectly the past 300 miles but was crossing major junction today and the engine did not respond to that I was increasing preasure on the throttle, it was quite scary.

I've checked the thottle cable and it seems to be fine so I am suspecting an AFM fault. There is no ECU fault codes but apparantly on the 1.2 16v faulty AFMs usualy do not show a fault unless its very bad. The other sting is that people have had ECU problems resulting in cheap after market AFMs so it is advised to use a Bosch one but they are £100.

Is there anyway of testing the AFM before replacing it and hoping for the best? Read more

Oops sorry if I caused offence there. I just meant that people don't always bother to complain/notice thicks not that your customers are thick. I sometimes do a job and a customer tells me 6 months later it didn't fix it, I just think I wish you had told me earlier as there is nothing worse than a customer potentialy not being happy.

I will get that throttle cable checked out tomorrow while he does the clutch cable (pedal is down to the floor which cannot be normal) if he still can't find anything I might just risk £60 and replace the MAF myself, I have taken out the MAF on my dads Fiesta so I can't see it being much different.

I've recently seen a 1997 Boxster 2.5 advertised for o.i.r.o £8500. It's done 43k miles, had a full Porsche service history from the main dealer since new, and has been checked out in the Porsche database as having had all its recall etc work done.

I'm 25, and am keenly considering buying this car, as I've always wanted one, and before responsibility takes its toll on me am best of having a 2 seater now!

I can afford the purchase, and the insurance, but am concerned about any issues I may encounter if I buy which will cause me major difficulties. I've tried to get quotes for after-market warranties, but thus far it seems to be impossible for this car. Porsche main dealers quote £400 for annual servicing on the current Boxster, so I assume that a specialist would be cheaper. Parts also look fairly reasonable on general items like brake pads etc.

What should I be aware of and wary of? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

"These low mileage cars aren't necessarily better than a well used one that has been treated with respect."

A very valid point - even worse, they could have been driven 5 days a week, at high speed on a cold engine, 2 or 3 miles to and from the station.

My Z3 was seven years old when I bought it, with 70,000 miles - just right. The engine is in fine health (touching wood) and used very little oil.

Unfortunately the OP is one of those who visits us once and never comes back, so we shall never know what he did with his money.

Hi guys,

Just bought a secondhand car and the inside smells a bit musty. It's been sitting for a few months so it may be a bit damp inside but I've checked all the interior and it's all dry. Likewise all the metalwork is good and no water is getting in.

Any tips for getting rid of the musty smell?

Thanks Read more

Thanks for all your replies. I've got a dehumidifier so I'll set that up today, then I'm going to wash all the interior followed by a liberal spraying of Fabreze.

Thanks
