I currently have 205/45/16 low profile tyres on my car (Chysler Neon RT 2001)

Please excuse my naivety but can i put on 'normal' tyres in replacement? If so what would be my size options? Also would the differet tyres make the car "softer" (i currently feel every lump and bump!)

You can't easily change them - higher profile (the 45 is 45% of the width) would mean larger overall circumference, which messes up the speedo. Also you'd have to tell your insurance company and they may not react well.

I think the choice in that size is pretty limited.

i've thought the same with SWMBO's car as we use it for all the long journeys (2005 X Type est). I could wear the speedo being out a little bit, as we travel with an aftermarket Satnav with the accurate speed shown on that.. but what worries me the most is whether a higher profile tyre would snag...as we often have it filled to the gunnels (and a bit more sometimes).

Does anyone know definitively? I'm thinking the difference between the current tyre (Pirrelli P Zero Rosso 225/45R17 91W) and say a Pirrelli P6000 which i've got on my car which are comfortable and long lasting

Have a look at this URL, it will calculate for you the different wheel/tyre sizes that will suit your car, although obviously you need to go to a smaller wheel diameter if you want to do away with low profile tyres. I dont blame you though, I dont like this obsession with uncomfortable low profile tyres.

Were low profile tyres fitted when the car was first built? I doubt it. Look in your owner's guide. Alternatively, enter your car's registration number in here.

The guide certainly gets it wrong for one of my cars.

The guide is spot on for the CC3 - and you could always read the size off the sidewall.

How old-fashioned is that?

You could always buy a set of aftermarket wheels of smaller diameter and fit larger profile tyres to them.

very true, but then the cost goes up, doesn't it. I considered using a forum for like minded cars to see if anyone wanted to swap their 16" ones for our 17" ones...but can't bring myself to do that (driving around on wheels that someone else might have truly abused....probably all in the head, as it's only more recently in life i've been able to buy new/nearly new from main dealers)

The driver's handbook supplied with a new car will normally list the suitable tyres for that car.

I know when I had the second Fabia, also on low profiles, I looked up the brochure and checked which other (smaller) wheels would fit, if you use a smaller diameter wheel and higher profile tyre in line with what is fitted on the lower spec models you won't affect the speedo and get a better ride!

Well I emailed the local Chrysler dealer today and he said that the correct tyre size for my car is 195/50/zr16

I assume that the tyres are aftermarket add ons by one of th previous owners. The alloy wheels are the standard ones that would have come out of the factory on the car.

So i am now hoping to change them back to original and hoping that they will fit perfectly (and then i will find out that the car has been lowered and all the tyres rub!!)

Evening all.

Before i start ringing around some tyre places to replace the tyres - will the original ones fit my car (195/50/16) in place of the low profiles i already have on the car (205/45/16)
