>>For example, changing a headlamp bulb was a long and difficult job as there's simply no room to squeeze your hand into the space.

Assuming this is very similar to my 98 2.0l re headlamps.
Changing bulbs away from home is IMO not a normal kerb side activity.
Changing them at home is no big deal and pretty simple.
Shield at top front of engine bay off, grill off, remove two screw and slacken a third allows the whole headlamp assemby to "fall" into your hands.
Takes just a few minutes. No skin donated to the task and blood pressure stable.

My experience with a Mondeo and a Focus plus lots of items on forums suggests the central locking is not very reliable. Both our vehicles have had new actuators and the Focus is again suspect.

Travelling in France, I've had a problem with the exhaust on my 406 hdi. I need to get a new middle section and silencer, and a new back silencer and tail pipe. How much would this cost in the UK? I've been quoted E390 here - no real option but to pay it, but out of interest would like to know! Read more

Dr Dave

Well you're in the right country for work to be carried out on your 406!

Suggest you shop around.

1.3ltr engine - manual transmition.
about 110k miles on the clock.

For the past year, my car randomly cuts out/stalls when I'm driving along.
The weird thing is, I can turn the key whilst rolling along after it's stalled and the engine starts again!

The stalling can happen at any speed, it's happened before at 10mph and sometimes 70mph, it's random. It's also happened when I've been waiting at traffic lights!

It doesn't seem to be weather related.

Sometimes it can happen 3 times in 1 journey, sometimes it wont happen for like a month.

When the engine stall/cut out happens, my lights and music do not turn off. and a red engine light comes on the dash board.

Ideas please?
Don't have the money to take it to a garage.

Thankyou in advance. Read more

I would guess a faulty sensor or a faulty sensor connection..

Unfortunately I was laid off yesterday and have to give my company car back in 4 weeks time. I?m hopeful of getting another job within the next 3-4 months that will also come with a car but between now and then I need to get a cheap car for running around and going to interviews in.

I?ve never spent much cash on my own car, £750 max, and ideally I wouldn?t want to spend more than that this time. The rules I have in place are most have at least 6 months on its ticket, ideally be taxed and easy to sell on when I want to get rid of it. Reliability is really important to me, much more than the brand of car but I know beggers can;t be choosers at this end of the market. I also have a small child so I?d rather not have a mini sized car, focus/mondeo sized preferred.

So guys, I?d really like your help with some simple questions,

Where to buy? Auction, Ebay, Autotrader, local rag
What to buy? Petrol/Diesel, I?m thinking Japanese for the reliability side of things
How much? Ideally as little as possible, will go to £1k if I have to.
What difference has the recent car scappage schemes made to the prices of bangers?

I don?t mind getting my hands dirty if I need to but I?d rather not if I can help it.

Any advice offered most welcome.

>>if the reputation is warranted

It doesn't really matter. If it has 12 months' MOT, then the chances are, it's 12 months' transport. So about £30 a month if you're paying £400 (which should be plenty).

If you've found a nice car; it's a car that stirs you heart; it's cheap... then what more can you ask?

ok, does it sound like its ticking over faster than any other cars you hear ticking over?

Depending on the ignition system (coil, plug leads, etc) you could probably get a cheap rev counter from a car accessory shop that connects to the battery and the low voltage input on the HT coil.

Ignore the APR - how much do they want per month for how many months, so what is the total cost financed via the dealer or the bank? That's what's important! Also, try asking what the cost would be without the £2k scrappage farce for the Disco - you might well find the overall deal is cheaper....!

My E60 will be three years old at the end of this month and will be due its first MOT.

I was wondering if I should get the MOT done by the BMW dealer so that if any work is required it hopefully will be covered by the 3 year warranty before it expires and they will do it or should I get the MOT done at my local garage?

Myself, partner and two children went Bristol to Padington a few weeks back for £55 total. Not bad, and only 1hr 20 each way. More than the cost of fuel, but if I had factored in parking and time probably cheaper in real terms.

Ticket for one on the same route pre 9am weekday can be in excess of £100.......

As a initial guess, the alternator charging control system? Do the lights flicker and is battery OK?
Might be worth checking the charging voltage coming out of the alternator when the car is running with and without lights on.

I've got gearbox oil coming from between the engine and the gearbox. Does anyone know where I can get a drawing of a gearbox.
