Hi,

I have a Focus 1.8 tddi. I noticed the other day that the heater fan will only work on positions 1,2 and 3. It will not work on the highest setting. This is the case with both the air conditioning on and off. Every thing else (heat, a/c, etc.) seems to work fine.

I'm sure that this is something fairly straight forward but I don't know what, and just wondered if anyone knew what is causing this. Thanks! Read more

Thank you for your advice about the fan.

After a while trying to reach the key from under the car (which never would have been successful) I gave up and called a locksmith, who opened the bonnet in all of about 10 seconds. I will definitely not shut the key under the bonnet again.

My sister has asked for my assistance in picking a new car for her. Which is fine in the winter but not in lovely weather like this! Better things to do with my time! :)

Anyway, she currently has a C3 diesel, is looking to give this to her daughter and trade her daughter's 10 year old 206 in under the scrappage scheme. Realises this means new car will be in daughter's name until she can change to her own. Hubby has a Fiat Doblo diesel and that is the main family car for trips, taking the dog etc.

She uses her own car predominantly for going to and from work , 20 miles each way most of which is motorway. Due to it being a "necessity" purchase for work, she is wanting to make it as cheap as possible to buy and to run.

Initially she is looking at 107 / C1 / Aygo and Panda. She does not want to go as big as Corsa, Punto etc as she perceives that to be more than she needs.

Ideally she wants another diesel but that I think would narrow it to C1 or Panda.

I have given her advice that in this size of cars, some of the petrols are very economical. I think C1 petrol is about 62mpg, diesel 68 mpg (but not sure what real life economy is). Also, I would prefer a bigger car for safety on motorway.

Anyone any real life experience of any of the above or having to make a similar decision? How does real life petrol vs diesel costs work out? I am also not convinced that the scrappage scheme would work out cheaper than buying say a demonstrator or nearly new model?

Any thoughts appreciated

Just to give a slight update - my sister has finally saw sense after much persuasion re her thinking about the whole deal.

She is now going to "scrappage" the 206 and trade the C3 in for an Aygo Blue (currently 14-16 week delivery time.)

Visiting 3 dealers to see who gives the best deal on the C3 assuming everything else is the same and will order tomorrow (I hope!)

We're looking to fit a tow hook to our Verso in order to mount a cycle carrier, since I find the current palaver of hoisting bikes onto the roof puts me off, and my wife won't do it at all. It must be a detachable one, for all sorts of reasons - not least that I'll otherwise be the one to bash my knee on it when squeezing past the car in the garage.

Our Toyota dealer has quoted a fitted price of £500 - which seems steep, but they can get it and fit it inside a week, which may be important. I have two other dealers locally I can try, but is there another option I should consider that won't invalidate the warranty?

Much obliged,
WdB. Read more

Quick update: we had the Toyota detachable bar (actually manufactured by Brink and about £275 for the hardware alone) fitted on Tuesday at a cost of £574. Turned out the original quote didn't include VAT but it was still the best of the three quotes we got. Take into account that they included a number plate for the cycle carrier, and didn't charge us for the end caps we needed to replace the ones that fell off our roof bars last year, and it seems pretty fair to me.

From The Telegraph "Honest John" column:

Spin cycle

I had an accident on January 31. I have now been told by the police that I am going to be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. The statement from the police says the accident occurred on a different road to the one on which it actually took place. As the accident also involved a pushbike, should the adult cyclist have been breathalysed, as I was? Incidentally, mine was negative. I have been told that if I plead guilty it will only cost me £43 and three points. If I plead not guilty then I will have to travel 100 miles and may have to pay witnesses that may be called. I wouldn?t mind doing this if I thought I could get away with being found not guilty. Could it go in my favour if I stated the truth, that the cyclist wore no helmet or fluorescent coat or markings?

W.R., Wem

You need to talk to a good solicitor and appraise him of the full facts. If you are saying the cyclist wove into your path and caused the collision, then that, combined with him not wearing fluorescent clothing, might lead to a decision in your favour rather than his.

"I wouldn?t mind doing this if I thought I could get away with being found not guilty. "

That's a reasonably clear admission of guilt, and note the driver doesn't dispute the collision, just the road it took place on.

We have no idea what time of day the collision took place so I don't see whether the presence or absence of hi-vis is relevent at all.

And since more pub-goers sustain head injuries than cyclists, would you really accept as mitigation from someone convicted of stamping on a man's head in a pub the fact that the victim wasn't wearing a helmet?

This kind of rubbish isn't helpful, or constructive, now is it likely to encourage courteous behaviour on the roads.

"Honest John" stated a couple of weeks ago that cycle lanes are a waste of money, which is rather a sweeping statement, some are, some aren't, but the over-riding ethos of the column and this site is that the motorist can do no wrong and cyclists are an impedence.

Very depressing.

Can we expect next week to see a letter from a cyclist asking for advice on how to inflate a personal injury case after an RTA with a motor vehicle?

What do you imagine the response would be if such a letter appeared?

This thread is going downhill fast. Therefore locked. It's taken less than 1.5 hours to get there too. Reading the post I knew where this was heading unfortunately.

Welcome to the backroom Solomon. Before posting a new thread in the future remember this is a discussion forum and others will always have a different opinion and you may not agree.

Do you know what year they were changed?

The air-con on the wife's Focus appears to have packed up. The light on the switch says it's on but it plainly isn't. She keeps it permanently on low all year (to avoid seals drying out) but has only noticed it not working during the recent warm weather. I've checked the fuse box and that seems ok. No leaks or strange noises / underside damage etc.. Hasn't been involved in any bangs bumps etc.. Just no cold air ! Any ideas ? Read more

the gas is past it's sell by date.

The gas doesn't degrade or decompose with time or use inside an AC system, it simply leaks away.
