Hello again.

One more problem I have on my Xantia 1.8i, petrol 8v, Oct. 1997.

My central doors lock suddenly stoped to work. It is controlled from IR sensor which works. The behaviour is the following:
1. From the (IR) remote it can lock ONLY two front doors and bagage door
2. From the remote it CANNOT unlock any door (but I can hear the sound of trying to lock on front doors)
3. When pressed down (to lock by hand) button on the right front door, it locks only the button on the driver's (front left) door.
4. Pressing down (to lock) button on drivers door, no other doors are locked.
5. Pressing any button on rear doors (left/right), no other doors are locked.

I have reseted the IR command inside, on roof (disconnected the connector and connected again), but nothing changed.

Can somebody explain me what is wrong and how to fix it.

Thanks Peter ! Read more

Can anyone help with this....the car is an auto and when stationary in traffic the brake pedal will very ocassionally sink slowly to the floor.....the brakes still hold it and it doesn't creep at all but very disconcerting. It never ever happens while moving....and recently passed MoT with no problems. My first thought was maybe a sticking caliper overheating but a complete checkover showed no signs of that at all, replaced hoses and fluid anyway though.....no sign at all of any fluid loss....next was servo, no sign of any problem there...did all normal checks as per manual. I suppose my next move will be to replace the master cylinder but reluctant to, especially because whilst moving there has never been any sign of the problem at all, which simply doesn't make sense to me!! I'm a little in the dark about abs in general and can't help suspecting it, although it works fine, no light has ever come on and I have checked and cleaned all electrical connections. Any suggestions would be very welcome indeed....I hate replacing parts just in case but its beginning to look that way!! Read more

Thanks for the reply but one of the first things I did was replace the fluid....still no problems since the caliper was replaced though! The problem I've always had about replacing the cylinder was that even when the pedal sank the brakes still worked fine....even though the pedal was most of the way to the floor you could still hold the car quite normally when you revved it.....thats the bit I could never understand?? That said, I finally found a new cylinder at a reasonable price and replaced it yesterday....but no signs of any problem when I removed the old one..ie no fluid between cylinder and servo...anyway thanks for comments and one way or another its sorted!!

Hello

I am driving Xantia 1.8i (petrol) 8V made on October 1997. I have strange problem that sometimes happen.

Sometimes during driving (at normal engine's working temperature, approx 80C) my engine just shut off. It happens in the following situation: slowing down, pressing the brakes and pressing the clunch (and trying to turn the steering wheel). To be clear in the situations when I am stopping for trafic light or want to takeout from the highway.

In this moment (when engine stop), my brakes still working correctly (thankfully), but my steering wheel lose the power (cannot turn). So I need fastly to turn on the engine again (with contact key). When turn on engine again, I can turn the wheel.

My brakes working well, rising up and going down with hydraulic system, also working well.

So the problem occures (sometimes) whe I press the clunch, the RPM suddenly falls down to the zero. This happens, lets say, in one of 30 such situations. Very rarely, this happen when the engine is cold (when leer RPM is approx 1200).

There is no service here where the people can understand the reason of such behaviour. Unfortunatelly, I am not able to present this problem to the service people (when I want to do this, the Citroen doesn't want to do it :)).

can somebody help me what to fix ? Read more

the idle control valve/stepper motor or rpm control if thats what citroen call it- on this engine it is underneath the flexable black air intake pipe. it will have magnetti marrelli written on it.

simply remove the connector with four wires in it (may need to remove one or two pieces to get to it) then using torx fitting unscrew the two screws and give it a good clean in wd40 and see if it helps- they can get gummed up with dirt. while you in that region give the air intake a good clean.

I have a strange Creaking noise coming from the car when I turn right. I am think the rear suspension, but does anyone else have any experience of this??

The car is a '53 Plate Ford Focus Mark I.

I'll get it checked out, thanks Robert. Was hoping it might be something I could do myself, don't wanna mess with suspension unless it's something easy though :(

Yet again on the M8 coming into Edinburgh this morning there is a major pile up where the motorway ends at a roundabout. I remember having a discussion with a colleague who claimed this was a unique set up in Britiain but although I couldn't prove otherwise, I am sure its not.

For those that don't know it, the motorway ends at a roundabout where it meets the A720 bypass. The motorway doesn't become an A road, doesn't go up a slip or anything like that, straightforward comes to an end at a roundabout.

Can someone put my mind at rest - is this common elsewhere in Britiain? Read more

Does the m4 not terminate at a roundabout in darkest south west wales somewhere?

Quite correct, and I have managed to miss it about 1000 times so far !

The A128 runs from the A13, & crosses the A127 towards Brentwood. It has a 50mph limit. However, on approaching 1/2 Way House roundabout over the A127, the limit changes from 50 to National Speed Limit for about 150yds before the roundabout, and back to 50 about 150yds after the roundabout.

Why would this be? I assume it has something to do with the A127 underneath the roundabout. It is dual carriageway there. If that is the case, why not have the black diagonal slash sign on the slip road to the A127, rather than the approach to the roundabout? Read more

The only reason I can think of is that the A127 is maintained/controlled by Essex County Council and that it is possible that the junction is also their responsibility whereas the A128 may well be maintained/controlled by the relevant local authority and therefore subject to regulation for that part by different authorities.
Having said that Essex County Council must have missed a trick here, they seem hell bent on abolishing the NSL!

Why do some people buy new cars from a dealer's stock instead of ordering one to come directly from the manufacturer? By placing an order you can have exactly the specification and factory fitted options you want, and know that the car hasn't been pawed over by numerous potential purchasers. When I look at new cars in a showroom I always test out the various switches and controls etc for function and robustness and I assume that everybody else does the same. As far as I'm concerned that's what showroom models are for ~ they're there to be handled. I'd never risk buying a car that was standing in a showroom. Read more

L'escargot

I can't really think that few
punters working the switches is going to put more wear and tear on them than
I would in the first week of ownership.

I don't just work the switches. I pull the door handles, adjust the mirrors, check what happens when I nudge the exterior mirrors, move the seats in all directions that are possible, open and slam shut the boot lid and bonnet, and kick the tyres etc etc. In a word, I test everything for robustness by loading up things to a far higher level than you are likely to do in your first week of ownership. It's the same when I chose spectacle frames ~ I give them a good twisting and pulling. By the time I've finished, showroom items of anything I look at are shop-soiled and I certainly wouldn't want to buy any of those particular samples!

Back to work after the 4-month shutdown. If any of you are reading this, I hope it goes well.

I thought it was odd that they didn't add in Jazz production capability while the
plant was shutdown however it was reported on the lunchtime BBC news that they did
just that with some test runs having been done.
Why then I wonder the delay in going into production with Jazz - it's going
to be several months before it starts properly rolling out of Swindon?

Becos its not just a matter of reconfiguring the line, training the workers and then turning out jazzi. All the components and sub assemblies that go into the blender need to be sourced, secured and negotiated into JIT arrival before you get the right flavour soup.
