50-national speed limit-50 within 400yds - tack
The A128 runs from the A13, & crosses the A127 towards Brentwood. It has a 50mph limit. However, on approaching 1/2 Way House roundabout over the A127, the limit changes from 50 to National Speed Limit for about 150yds before the roundabout, and back to 50 about 150yds after the roundabout.

Why would this be? I assume it has something to do with the A127 underneath the roundabout. It is dual carriageway there. If that is the case, why not have the black diagonal slash sign on the slip road to the A127, rather than the approach to the roundabout?

The only reason I can think of is that the A127 is maintained/controlled by Essex County Council and that it is possible that the junction is also their responsibility whereas the A128 may well be maintained/controlled by the relevant local authority and therefore subject to regulation for that part by different authorities.
Having said that Essex County Council must have missed a trick here, they seem hell bent on abolishing the NSL!
