HI all,

Last October, I had a letter dop through my door from the local police saying that they were intending to prosecute the driver of a car with the same registration as mine for having an accident a couple of weeks earlier at 8:45am. They said the car had left the scene without stopping and that I needed to reveal who was driving the car at the time.

I had had no accident and went out to check and my car was completely undamaged. I rang them to ask what this was about and they said that a cab driver had reported a blue Nissan (same as my car) pulling out of my road and crashing into his rear right hand side (causing damage and leaving his passenger 'shaken but unhurt') before driving off. I told them this must be a mistake as I had had no crash and my car was undamaged and they said to fill out the report and put my version of events and send it back to them.

I could not 100% remember if I was driving in that day as I only drive into work once or maybe twice a week at random. I thought that if they had my registration number that someone must have seen me and I didn't want to say I hadn't if they had this witness and possibly others saying they'd seen me. In a state of shock and distress, I assumed that I had been driving and wrote back saying that I had been driving to work but that I strongly denied any sort of involvement of any sort of incident at all and that I would gladly help with enquiries etc.

A week later, I had my work CCTV pulled, which showed me walking in at 8:58am, 13 minutes after this alleged 'accident'. I know that if I was walking into the carpark, I was 100% not driving that day. I called the police back, admitted that I had made a mistake and that I wasn't even driving that day and I had the CCTV to prove it. I also had my doctor witness my undamaged car and date and sign photos with newspapers in etc etc.

In December, I had a note from the police saying no further action would be taken against anyone involved in the incident. The end of it, I thought, until yesterday another letter comes through the door from my insurance company's solicitor saying they've received an insurance claim from the cab driver.

The guy cannot possibly have any physical evidence such as paintmarks and there is no physical evidence on my 10 year old unrepaired car. I have 2 noticeable dents, one rear bumper and one front right hand side, both of which were done years ago and were marked on my car service report in 2007. What is the likelihood of this guy getting anywhere, given that it's my word against his but he, supposedly, has a witness? I'm terrified that my insurance company will just pay out and put my premiums up. Its causing me a lot of stress as Ill have to essentially sell my car if my premiums go up as I won't be able to afford them. Anyone have any experience like this? Read more

"I have seen the woman before but I cannot remember from where. I do not believe that she could see my front number plate as she was ahead of me with her window up and she did not turn round to see it. I can only surmise that she knows my car and the claims are part of a vendetta. (a farm is nearby and my piece of land which would be like the last piece in a jigsaw is the one piece they cannot get) "

This is vague surmise and it is potentially emotive. At this stage I feel you should put it to one side - there is nothing here for you that can help your case....

The message Engine Service Required flashed up on the laser display board of my Volvo S60 D5 (52, 91,000 miles) on my way home last night. It was thoroughly warm and I'd just given it some revs (4,200 or so) in third on a downhill sliproad, partly to keep it breathing well, partly because I like the sound and the shove in the back. };---)

I've googled around a bit, but other owners who've seen this - as in the one BR thread I found, linked below - report loss of power, limp-home mode or the engine cutting out. None of these happened to me - the car felt and sounded perfectly normal, and reached home (only about two miles from where the message appeared) without mishap. The message disappeared when I pressed the 'Read' button on the stalk, and the yellow warning triangle did not appear at all. I've not started the car since, but I'd be interested to know how concerned I should be.

The car is about 3,000 miles away from its next scheduled service and is otherwise running flawlessly. I've had it since new and it covers about 1,500 (mainly motorway) miles a month.

Much obliged,
WdB

Daughter is looking to buy a 2007 Corsa D 1.2 petrol with 13k on the clock from a Vauxhall dealer. I lifted the oil cap and it's thick with 'mayonnaise'. When I pointed this out to the salesman as potentially an indication of a blown overhead gasket he just dismissed it as 'oil residue'. Am I right to steer her well clear of this car? Read more

Hey all,

I have an old Discovery and Audi 80 which keep me fairly busy in terms of maintenance and I'm sick to death of spending 3/4's of the job time just trying to undo that pink fluffy dice of a nut/bolt. I'm thinking a decent impact wrench will help ease the pain but there are loads of models out there and I was hoping for some advice.

I need the wrench to be fairly meaty, ideally, i.e. capable of doing more than wheel nuts but I don't have much money so the closer to £100 the better, and I won't turn my nose up at 2nd hand goods...couple of key questions I have:

1. Air, corded 240v or cordless; which is the best balance for power, cost and convenience?

2. If air, what specifications would you need as a minimum on the compressor for it to work the wrench i.e. capacity, horse power, psi etc. I know the air impact wrenches are cheap but obviously u need a decent compressor to drive it.

3. Whatever the option what kind of power do I need the wrench to be, i've seen NM and lbs per sq inch or something, what do i need to make it useful for most tough nuts?

4. Any brands to stay away from, I know everyone talks about the good ones i.e. snap on but they're a bit beyond my budget. There's loads of other brands, Rolson, Boschmann etc. kicking about; false economy?

5. And of course, any recommendations on impact wrenches used.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Can a backroomer recommend a battery powered/ mains powered impact wrench of any description. I have a list above, but I wonder which is the favourite one to go for?
Thanks

Any chance of attaching a foot pump to a completely flat tyre (apparently let down) and managing to pump it up?

Not sure what the gas is, might be nitrogen ...

I would guess nitrogen, or possibly CO2 (now there's a way to reduce global warming) - more likely N2. Anything else (other than air) would be too expensive, or flammable.

Ive just put a head on a 1.8 td escort, Im struggling to find the timing marker for the bottom end. Can anyone shed any light? I know its done via a 43mm pin through the block but I cant find the access hole. Its the twin belt type engine, the pump belt is still in place and with the pump on its marker (hole at 12oclock) I have set the camshaft at its correct position. The engin turns over correctly at this point by hand, no knocking valves etc but the engine will not start. I am thinking maybe the timing isnt correct.
Can anyone help? autodata diagrams are useless. Read more

DP

Take off the cam cover. Check the tail end of the camshaft (i.e. not the cambelt end) for an offset slot. With the cam timed correctly, the offset slot should be perfectly horizontal and level with mating surface on the cylinder head for the cam cover. The official timing tool is a piece of metal plate which rests on the cylinder head surface and engages snugly with this slot. In practice, any piece of metal plate of the correct thickness, and packed equally either side (old feeler gauges are perfect) will do the trick.

hi,

can anyone shed some light on this?

Do the speed guns (hand held type) used by the police on the motorways pointing out of a traffic police cars send out the conviction through the post or do they stop you there and then?

I just passed one today at about 80mph and am really worried! Read more

So do I, and not for the first time.

Just wish he would inject a bit of levity now and again. :)

Filling up the Rio last night and caught the edge of the fuel flap cover whilst hanging up the diesel pump, off it pings across the forecourt, other drivers looking on and obviously impressed with my car's build quality, me slightly embarassed picks it up and calmly slings it in the boot. I'm sure that I have done similiar on previous cars & they held together. I hate to think what a new cover costs c/w paint so I drilled several holes along the hinge mechanism & lock-wired the thing back together. It is functional again and looks normal on the outside. A successful bodge then.

Update, just out of curosity I priced a new flap from Kia - a not unreasonable £10.47 + VAT. The expensive element is painting it which costs an additional £45 + VAT. Not really worth it as my bodge seems to be holding up fine. I have even hidden the lockwired hinge by dousing the wire with touch-up paint. , now when the flap is open you would have a hard job to tell that it has been 'fixed' :)

I have heard nothing good about owning a diesel particulate filter but I am not sure whether ALL new diesel cars are fitted with them.

So - are all new diesel cars of 1600cc to 3000cc fitted with diesel particulate filters or are there models that escape?

So a car that produces that 'diesel soot' smell when it starts up has no DPF? Judging from the smell of our garage when I go in there to close the doors after Mrs dB has left, I think that gives me the answer to my "Does the Verso have one?" question.
