Vivaro - 04 1.9 CDTI clutch noise - sixxfingers
Hi Guys I have had a rattiling noise start today when i press down clutch pedal!
When van is standing still with engine running and i press down clutch pedal a rattle noise appears and then dissapears when clutch pedal is released also noise dissapears when clutch pedal is down and i rev the engine but starts again when engine revs go back down to tick over? Any ideas to problem would be great as clutch is working find apart from noise when pedal is pressed!

Sounds like the DMF (dual mass flywheel) is starting to break up. Could be something else but if it is coming from the clutch housing / gearbox area that's most likely what is causing it.

i agree, sounds like the dmf (ouch thats going to hurt the pocket)

What sort of figures Would dmf cost? Would that invovle replacement of clutch as well and if i let noise carry on if its the dmf Whats the worst that could happen if that packs up while driving?
Any replys/ideas greatfully received!

you would be crazy not to have the clutch done while the gearbox was out, i would expect to not see any change out of approx £800 (clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder)depending on where its done (dealer/independant) the noise will become worse driverbility would get worse (clutch judder etc) eventually the flywheel could destroy the gearbox (bearings) you need to get it confirmed as soon as possible then make a decision but i dont think you will have much choice, you could ask your local renault dealer for a price, may be able to use them instead of vauxhall or nissan come to that (they all sell the same vehicle just different badge) Regards TB

This is very depressing, I read about these moderns vans costing the earth to fix, so early in their life. Is the Toyota Supervan a better bet?, with simple technology, as I am thinking of a camper but want none of the expensive repairs these guys are getting.

did you try nissan/renault they might be a bit cheaper

I don't know where you are, but I can recommend a good Renault specialist in Aldershot who did the clutch on our ex-Scenic. It was £950 all in, but on the Scenic it's a subframe out job due to a lack of clearance on the gearbox. It may not be an issue on the Vivaro / Trafic, but in any case, their labour rate is a little over half that of a main dealer, and they're fantastically helpful.
Modern vehicles are awesome until the warranty expires.

Hi have got a price of around £500 for clutch and slave unit fitted! i take it that would not include the mass dual flywheel! Have done a bit of research on the vans and have seen a 4 part clutch kit that includes a solid fly wheel with kit! not sure if this would be better in long run? Garage that have quoted me on clutch have not mentioned the mass dual flywheel being faulty but they have not stripped her yet!!!!!!!
It seems such a shame to spend so much money because clutch feels fine and works fine apart from that rattle!!!! Hi topbloke have not phoned renault or nissan just an independant garage.

I was talking to a VW tech friend about this recently. He said that if the DMF rattles, it can go on like this for years, or it can fail suddenly. He's seen a few VWs come in on tow trucks, on which the DMF has suddenly fallen apart at high revs, and sent bits of shrapnel through the bellhousing and gearbox casing. New gearbox time. I seriously doubt these issues are exclusive to VAG products. Another sign of imminent DMF failure is apparently a lumpy idle, as the DMF goes out of balance as it starts to break up.
He is of the opinion that the solid flywheels are a bad idea because of vibration and shock to the transmission that it wasn't designed to cope with, but it's one of those things that opinions are really divided on. Some claim to have fitted these kits and had no further trouble.
A new DMF for this Renault engine is about £300 on its own, if I remember correctly.
By the way, £500 sounds very reasonable for a clutch replacement. I wish mine had been that price!

Hello, was going to start a new thread, but saw this old post. Mines exactly the same :( Been told today. Ive been advised to get the parts from the internet as its a lot cheaper. So I need a flywheel mass - is this the same as a DMF ?and a clutch kit ? anyone know any good sites or got any more advice please ?
