The message Engine Service Required flashed up on the laser display board of my Volvo S60 D5 (52, 91,000 miles) on my way home last night. It was thoroughly warm and I'd just given it some revs (4,200 or so) in third on a downhill sliproad, partly to keep it breathing well, partly because I like the sound and the shove in the back. };---)
I've googled around a bit, but other owners who've seen this - as in the one BR thread I found, linked below - report loss of power, limp-home mode or the engine cutting out. None of these happened to me - the car felt and sounded perfectly normal, and reached home (only about two miles from where the message appeared) without mishap. The message disappeared when I pressed the 'Read' button on the stalk, and the yellow warning triangle did not appear at all. I've not started the car since, but I'd be interested to know how concerned I should be.
The car is about 3,000 miles away from its next scheduled service and is otherwise running flawlessly. I've had it since new and it covers about 1,500 (mainly motorway) miles a month.
Much obliged,
WdB

Brief update: a short drive (<10 miles) today revealed no problems and no reappearance of the message, although I didn't rev it hard as the engine wasn't fully warm, and it was raining. It'll get a longer drive tomorrow, so I'll find an opportunity to give it some revs then.
Incidentally, this problem (if it is one) isn't specific to the S60; it could apply equally to a V70 or an S80 with the same engine, but I couldn't see how to indicate that in the title.

Final update: after a week and 400 more miles, I've seen no hint that there's anything wrong. Last night, I gave the car exactly the same boot down the same sliproad as last week and it seemed perfectly happy. I imagine some transient cause like a leaf created a momentary shortage in the engine's air supply, and once that cleared itself all was well again. Unless it happens again I doubt I'll even mention it at the next service.

Thanks for keeping us informed Wdb, glad its cleared itself. I'm always interested in Volvo posts as i have an S60 D5 05 reg myself, but have little to ask about on here 'cause they're such a lovely flawless car, and your right that engine is a corker.
